Frenchies, continuez plus bas....
Hi everyone,
Well, my first safari has ended yesterday and after an amazing 3,500 kilometers, 2 weeks, lot of dirt, sand, dust, amazing sights and awesome travel companions, I am in Johannesburg for the next 4 days to recuperate and sleep. Then it's back to the bush for a river/safari adventure in Botswana and Zambia for 2 weeks.
Time is flying, I cannot believe I have been on the road for 4 weeks now. Africa is getting under my skin - in a good way - and the more I see, the more I want to see and understand. This trip so far has been like a blast of oxygen to the soul. I feel like on a different planet. I am not sure how else to describe it...
It was really hard to leave the group yesterday, I made some great friends and we spent a lot of time together - Have you ever driven 14 hours with 7 other people in a little van from 4 am to 6 pm? Let's just say it fosters closeness and a certain bond. I can't wait to see everyone's pictures and share the rest
of my trip with them.
I think I am experiencing a reverse culture shock. Johannesburg is a huge sprawling city, looks a lot like an American city, but the difference is that there are a ton of security guards everywhere and all the homes are behind tall walls with barbwire. My hotel is very hip, only 10 rooms, a great pool, gorgeous grounds and very nice staff. This feels like staying in some rich friend's villa!
Tomorrow I am going to visit Soweto with an organized tour. Soweto It should be interesting and I hope to get some insight into the apartheid issue from the other side's perspective.
Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in the country, with Census 2001 putting its population at 896 995! It's very dangerous for a white person to go there alone and that is why I have booked a specialized tour.
So far all the white South Africans I have spoken with have exactly the same concerns and fears: they believe that sooner or later white South Africans will be kicked out like it happened in Zimbabwe. They all say that it has become very hard to make
it as a white person in South Africa and that every month a new law comes out and it is favoring black population. Really interesting too is the fact that all the white people I have met know a friend or a family member who has been victim of some sort of violence, often involving a gun and a car that gets stolen.
So much happened since my last blog entry, I am not sure how I am going to share all these amazing memories with you. I think I am going to do separate entries for Mozambique, the wildlife, the group and vehicule I traveled with and maybe I will do an entry with just pictures because I know many of you are eagerly waiting for them! Now that I am in South Africa again I have a modern age connection and I should be able to upload the best of easily. Bear in mind that I have 750 pictures already!
I hope everyone is doing great and had a scary Halloween with lots of candies! Thank you for all your emails and messages, they always make my day! So please keep posting them!!
Love
Isa
Bonjour tout le monde!
Me voici a Johannesburg pour 4 jours de repos. Mon premier safari s'est termine hier soir. Quelle aventure!
