Hey everyone! I have had a busy few days and am now in Storm's River, a great little village which is slightly more rural than what I've seen so far. The people are very friendly and the hostel is good, but first I will tell you about Wilderness, where I spent the last 3 days. I took the bus from Cape Town to the Fairy Knowe hostel in Wilderness, which took about 8 hours. The hostel is in the woods, about a 25 minute walk from town (during which you pass many, many huge vacation homes). The rich white/poor black syndrome is quite obvious here. The beach here is absolutely huge, but with hardly anyone on it so I spent a day there and walking around town (which took about 3 minutes total). The hostel was ... read more

WooooooooooHoooooooooo!!! So we finally did the big bungy, and it was amazing!!! (Chris you would have loved it!) So it was kinda scary but not as scary as i thought it would be. I think you dont really have enough time to get scared. Its not scary untill you are standing with your toes over the edge about to jump and by this point they are already counting down from 5! So they get to 1 and you know you are going over the edge no matter what, so you figure that you might as well give it the biggest jump you can! Once over the edge, the fear hits you for a couple of seconds but then you just start to enjoy it! But it feels weird, not really as if you are falling. Feels ... read more

Hi everyone, hope you all had a very good new year!! Here we celebrated the new year twice, once in South African time and once in British time. I think some of the locals thought we were crazy when we started shouting happy new year at 2am! But it was great fun and lots of them even joined in with the English new year! After spending new years in Bloem, we then travelled down to the wild coast to Coffee Bay, joined by Frans’ best mate Gerhard (Who is crazy and not right in the head!). This place was really nice but really was quite wild and secluded, had a great atmosphere. Coffee bay is one of the great places for surfing, unless your name is Francois! While he was surfing he managed to fall off ... read more

Zzzziiiiiipppp! Zzzzziiiiippppp! Zzzzziiiipppp! Off to Stormsriver Zip Line tours! We woke early, got dressed in some of our warmest clothes, which by the way we didn't pack many of, and got on the bus for the drive to Stormsriver. We are off for a morning of Zip lining and adventure! I woke up pumped to be strapped to a metal cable suspended 30 meters above the ground and fly through the treetops, Marnie on the other hand was not so excited. Not only was there the apprehension of height, speed and the unknown but also the rain to contend with. This was the first time that we had a overcast day with continuous drizzle in the 50+ days we have been here. Once we arrived and signed our lives away, absolving the tour company of any ... read more

Well, the first free fall took 5 sec and the feeling and the rush that goes through your body is unbeatable! I couldn't stop screaming and laughing, hearing the echo between the mountains, amazing!! The scariest part was waiting for someone to come and pick me up, it felt lke I was jus hanging in this string for ages which I did and it gave me time to think about what happens if.., where are ... read more

Today was another beautiful day crisp, cool, and sunny. Left our backpacker's hostel in the morning and headed to the Knysna Elephant Sanctuary. Here, we learned a lot about the elephants of Knysna and we also got to feed and interact with them. There were 5 of them, three adults and two youngsters. Sally was the matriarch of the herd so all of the elephants followed her. Keisha was the baby of the herd at 2 years of age. and Shaka was the only male of the herd. The other two elephants were Thandi and Nandi. Whenever the elephants rubbed against each other, it sounded like sandpaper, but when they walked, it was completely silent because they have padded feet. It was amazing but sad to hear that the population of elephants dropped from 500 in ... read more

Storms River is the touristy version of Natures Valley mixed with the flavour of NZ's Queenstown. For those interested in the worlds highest bridge bungy, sky diving, river rafting, scuba etc, this is your place! We prefer to stick to our normal routine of exploring, chilling, eating and drinking! Tube and Axe Back Packers is quite an awesome place and very condusive to all of our routine activities, even thru the day long power outages. The beer miraculously stays cold! Our tent, Maatian HQ is standing beautifully between banana and palm trees and next to the campfire. Because we'd done lots of hiking in NV we decided just to go for a leisurely stroll through the Tsitsikama National Park. Dressed in flip flops with minimal supplies of fruit and water and armed with a dodgy map ... read more

So far South Africa was too western for our travelling tastes, especially after our time in Asia. We enjoyed doing stuff but it was also a little too expensive and the seperation between the whites and the blacks seemed large to us - naturally enough given the country's history I guess. As we would progress further north this seperation would decrease and we found ourselves enjoying things more. I guess I didn't come to Africa to hang out in isolated white settlements with Gap year students from the UK - not that there is anything wrong with that. In Stormsriver we did the largest bungee jump in the world - couldn't pass that without the jump. It was 216m high and the freefall was quite amazing. We also took a walk around an indigenous forest and ... read more
