So for the past week or so we've all been with our homestay families around Windhoek. It was really odd at first...and still is in a lot of ways, because we all had just gotten settled in OUR house, and are very used to being on our own. To add to that, we come back to our house almost everyday, since alas, our living room is the classroom. So in some ways that's nice- I didn't have to pack a lot, I can get stuff I need everyday, but it feels really forced to have to leave my house just to go sleep somewhere else. And I realized after not seeing these people that I've spent all my time with from Friday until Tuesday that I REALLY missed not being around them. But that being said, ... read more

We left Cape Town yesterday and have just arrived in Windhoek, Namibia today after a 19 hour bus ride. Oh, pardon me, did I say 19 hours? I meant to say 27. Yes, after the breakdown on the side of the road ("Supa Quick" car repairs was not so supa quick) and the bus company not finishing the necessary paperwork to get us through immigration at 12:30 in the morning, the 19 hour bus ride turned into 27. At first Jordan was not liking the whole scenario but then I explained to him that you have not really experienced Africa until you have been broken down on the side of the road for many hours or have been held up for a very long time, so just enjoy the experience. I do believe we are getting ... read more

So I definitely wrote this a week ago...and I have no idea what happened to it. If I were an interesting person I would probably have more interesting things to say. Our days still seem jam packed and fascinating to me, but then when you think about it they are pretty routine. Monday I started my internship, which is at an organization called Catholic AIDS Action. I've been there two days, and still not entirely sure on what I'll be doing. I spent more time riding in the combi to and from internships than actually at mine on monday I believe. But as soon as I got there I was told to answer phones in the office while everyone went to a meeting. This was bad because a) I didn't know a single person b) i ... read more

So I'm now officially settled. We wrapped up our South African adventures and headed to Namibia on Wednesday. Besides the fact that there was awful turbulence right when we were landing, so it appeared that we were crash landing in the middle of the Kalahari desert, everything was great. I don't know why I didn't really believe that we'd be living in a desert, but I just assumed Windhoek, the capital where we are living wasn't. It was such a huge difference from Johannesburg. Coming from a city of almost 8 million to then driving through the desert for 45 minutes before we saw any real development is a huge change. It's gorgeous here...spring time and much warmer. I think I can safely put away the ski socks and sweat shirts. We even saw baboons on ... read more

Hi everyone, well i have safely arrived here and everything is going surprisingly a smoothly. I have met up with the other two girls that were arriving at the same time as me and we have just trundled into town to Windhoek to see whats going on. They have the most amazing markets with all types of things in them but i dont want to buy anthing just yet because it means carrying it on my back for the next 6wks!! Namibia is so barren, there is absolutely nothing for miles around outside the city. When we were landing it appeared that we just came down onto the plain because there were no buildings around or any sign of civilisation! We even had to walk across the runway to get to the airport builing!! I move ... read more

Yes yes, a member of my team thinks he saw Brad here in Windhoek... hehe... Anyway this country is great! It's beautiful, hardly no malaria, you can drink the tap water, food is decent. And the weather is awesome. Here are a few pics for fun... no no NOT of Angelina or Brad... just a few Windhoek pics... not the best, but it's a start!... read more

Halloooooo Ik ben en Windhoek!! And I will have to work my Africaans... because it's even more used than English here! I arrived yesterday. My trip was of course very long but no mishaps, so can't complain too much! We're staying in a guesthouse right now which is nice, clean and cheap, but we need to find a place closer to the city and where we can work from (we have no Internet in our rooms right now... I'm in a Internet cafe right now...). Anyway I still haven't figured out what to think of the city; it's NOTHING like any of the African cities I've seen so far. I'll be posting maybe in a day or two, with photos if I can hook my laptop up to the Internet. Beste, Hanneke p.s. Have a safe ... read more
