We were luckily enough to muster together a group of 5 of us to hire a car and see what we could in Namibia as the public transport stystem here is almost non existent. We got a Nissan Almera. Probably not the best car for 5 adults, but it was the only affordable one, so it had to do. We started off at Etosha NP. The park was big, but it was good having our own car as we could explore it at our own free will. We stayed in campsites inside the park, which were basic, but had all that we needed. The campsites also had a waterhole out the back, which they light up over night. These were great as you get to see a variety of animals come down for a drink once ... read more

I know two days in a row is a lot to handle, but I'm feeling slightly Thanksgiving inspired and and highly against the paper I have to write on Thanksgiving. Here's a poem by Maya Angelou that Rob, one of the other students also from UNC shared as a toast during our Thanksgiving. The title is also a quote from his mom, which was so fitting for our hodge podge family this Thanksgiving. Human Family I note the obvious differences in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy. Some declare their lives are lived as true profundity, and others claim they really live the real reality. The variety of our skin tones can confuse, bemuse, delight, brown and pink and beige and purple, tan and blue and white. I've sailed upon ... read more

Somehow, this entire semester is almost over. This is our last full week, our last week of class, our last week of internships. We have just a week left in Namibia, and I'm pretty much freaking out about having to leave. I really love this country. Like a lot. And I can't believe that the time flew by so quickly. Right now the only consolations are the fact that I don't have to leave these people yet, we still have 10 days together in Cape Town after we leave that promise to be an absolute blast, and I'll routinely be able to drop in conversations, "Back when I was in Nam..." All the bumper stickers and abbreviations for Namibia are Nam, which I find funny. This has been one of the easiest semesters I've ever had...I ... read more

So the developments of this week include a recent unhealthy love of eggs and meat. Atkins anyone? I really never used to like eggs...but while most people have internships or class Wednesday morning me and two other girls have open mornings since I go to my internship in the afternoon. We pretty much spend the entire week planning where we will eat breakfast on Wednesday mornings and how we will order our eggs. I'm in love with Wednesday mornings...we're gradually hitting all the best breakfast places in Windhoek, and I now know I like my eggs fried hard with toast. mmm. And the meat...somehow meat has become a perfectly acceptable snack. Come back really late at night, what do we do, fight for the left over processed chicken patties in the fridge. Last week end 6 of us headed out to Soussevlei, which is home of the biggest sand dune in the world and is in the Namib desert. I'd be lying if I didn't say one of my main reasons for going was because we were told by a group of our guys that they didn't think we'd be able to do it. So clearly, super competetive Erin kicked into gear and had to prove them wrong. Just getting there was an adventure...the driver that was going to take us didn't have a working phone, so we had to just hope he'd appear, and sure enough he did. Just in time to figure out the center's combis that we were going to use were nowhere to be found. So 3 hours later, Mohamed and Joseph, our driver, ... read more

We drove to Windhoek and stayed at the lovely Pension Steiner, we had rung ahead the day before to check they had a room available. Pension Steiner was great, secure parking, friendly staff, they served lunch in the lovely garden around a pool and it is REALLY close to the centre of the city. We walked around a small part of the city and saw the meteors that dropped in Gibeon 300km south, about 600 million years ago, and saw the Christus Church up on the hill built in art nouveau and gothic styles. The centre of the city is not like London for example, it is not dirty, crowded, busy or closed in, and it was not raining! We did some chores, got stamps, took out some money from the ATM, and bought some souvenirs. ... read more

When I was in Year 7 or 8, I did a project on the Kalahari and the San Bushmen that lived in it (think The Gods Must be Crazy...but don't dwell on the stereotype or Coca Cola product placement). It was a really good project and I got a great mark. But I digress and get ahead of myself. James and I are now in Windhoek, Namibia. It took a 20 hour bus ride, numerous stops at roadside cafes (no, James did not eat anything) and movies (The Perfect Man and some Jim Carrey movie) to get here from Cape Town. Not too bad, despite Hillary Duff's not so great acting. We are staying at a hostel called the Cardboard Box and have completely settled into a laid back frame of mind. We arrived at 6am ... read more

David and I went to Namibia for just over two weeks. David had booked our flights with Air Namibia from London Gatwick direct to the capital of Namibia, Windhoek. And we had sorted out our own route/itinerary and David had booked the accommodation through the excellent Namibia Reservations based in Otijwarongo. He had also organized our hire car which we were to collect from Hosea Kutako International Airport. The flight was fine - a little bumpy for most of the flight over Africa - but not really too bad. We landed early in the morning and collected our car and set off by about 0930. It was a glorious sunny day and the road was very quiet. In Namibia they drive on the left - so that was fine for us! We drove towards Windhoek, 37k ... read more

So I wish I was clever enough to have come up with this clever hand gesture of a country...but I'm still endlessly amused with it nonetheless. I'm around the middle finger's knuckle. The rest of the homestay ended well. When I returned to my house Saturday morning, after a somewhat failed attempt at celebrating Mary Olive's 22nd birthday Friday night, to find my host sister standing at the gate screaming JAIMIE! (what she insists my name is. by the way mom and dad, thanks for the name that is impossible for everyone to say. I was told you should have named me Mary.) I was also told she'd be gone all week end...so Saturday morning started out a little rough. I took a shower in the middle of the day for the sole reason that I ... read more

Well, I finally left Chameleon Backpakers' today and Windhoek itself. I see that as of my last blog I intended to stay for one night until I could get a rental car together - that was a week ago. I woke up the day after the 27 hour bus ride feeling refreshed and little more comfortable in my surroundings, however it was still my goal to rent a car that afternoon and head out to the sand dunes in Sossusvlei. This was a slight problem because I didn't have any cash on me and I also needed to transfer some money onto my credit card to rent the car. This was going to be a feat in itself. As luck would have it, the internet seemed to be down in all of Namibia. First I tried ... read more
