N/a'an-ku-se We've arrived at N/a'an-ku-se - a project with the principal aim of managing the conflict between humans and large carnivores, especially cheetahs (the most endangered of the big cats in Africa) and leopards. Additionally, the centre includes an animal sanctuary, has a school and a clinic for the local San (bushmen) community. There's no rest - as soon as we arrive we meet Flo, the German biologist responsible for the research side of N/a'an-ku-se that deals with the leopards and cheetahs, and we're off looking for cat spoor. That puddy-paw-prints to the uninitiated. We learn the basics of paw anatomy. It's difficult, you're looking for some very soft imprints of paw prints on the sand, although we're assured it'll get easier with time. The breaking news on the compound is that some wild cheetahs and ... read more

The Journey to Windhoek We have taken the overnight flight to Jo'Burg, pretty comfortable, fairly empty. Arrive in Jo'Burg a bit bleary-eyed. The nytol has taken it's toll, but at least there's no jetlag. Jo'Burg a very impressive airport, as these things go - and we take an internal flight to Windhoek. The scenery over Botswana and the Kalahari desert and into Namibia looks awe-inspiring and pretty desolate at the same time. No offence to any Celts, but the emptiness kind of reminded us of flying into Inverness - nothing built up around. A lot of clear air turbulence as we came into land - can see why they call it Windhoek! Our transfer taxi driver give us our first taste of ironic Namibian humour. We stay in the Chameleon Backpackers Lodge, which is really nice. ... read more

Back into the warm comfort of my other life. Where the sky is blue and the sun shines all day long… at least at this time of year. Where the worry about my mother’s health is softened by distance. Where solving the latest problem with my house can be delegated or postponed for another six months. (I won’t thank myself then, but there’s little option now). Where I don’t have bills to pay, or errands to run. Where I can sit out on the stoep in the daytime and read my book, or chat on the phone in the evening, watching the chattering, swooping swallows gradually concede their dominance of the skies to the bats and the dazzling stars. (I always forget how dark the skies are here, and how fabulous the starscape.) On Sunday night, ... read more

Before you sit down to read this, I just want to warn you that it is quite long! I just had to put that out there before you all blame me for taking up minutes or hours or even days of your time!.... Ever since I left Tanzania, time has flown by! I arrived in Windhoek, Namibia on a Wednesday in mid-march. At the airport, I waited with my transfer driver for a girl named Gemma. We were driven to Chameleon Backpacker’s Lodge. We were in a room with 6 other strangers and we all shared one bathroom. The following morning, I took a REAL shower with hot water (from solar heating- very environmentally conscious… they had compost and recycling too!) Gemma and I spent that Thursday in a shopping mall 5 minutes from our hotel. ... read more

Geo: -22.5648, 17.0931We arrived back in Cape Town quite late and only managed a few hours sleep before we needed to be on the road and making our way to the airport for an early flight. Not that we needed to have bothered as the flight was delayed for three hours due to fog. So we bided our time, ate a big breakfast courtesy of South African airways and eventually made it to Windhoek by mid afternoon. Our guest house at Windhoek was another pleasant surprise. Although only a small property they managed to provide pretty much everything a person could want to feel relaxed and at home. Everything from the rooms to the small gardens was made to be very pleasing to the eye. We were happy to chill out on the veranda for a ... read more

Hello I'm still alive, just. While we're here we have to sleep with the baby baboons, of which there are 5. The biggest one, Troy, has taken quite a liking to me, and to no one else. So I have in my bed with me nearly every night which is pretty knackering. I had Troy and the tiny one, Bakiies last night which was fine, until Bakiies pulled his nappy off... not so fun. We were down in NamibRand last week releasing our leopard which was amazing. It is SUCH a beautiful part of Namibia, amazing sun sets. It's supposed to be semi-desert but is quite green at the mo die to all the rain they've had down there. I was ill for a few days so stayed in bed but the days I was alive ... read more

Been in Namibia for over a week now and this is the first chance I've had to get on the internet.. Not really sure where to start with the stories.. I arrived last Thursday to possibly the worst thunder and lightening storm I have ever seen and it continued to rain for the next few days, eventually got some sun on the weekend.. and got burnt. I did my first two days on the Wildlife side of the programme which involved walking the big baboons who lke to have a ride on your shoulder and pee down your neck, feeding all the animals including the big carnivores that there are at N/a a'n Ku Se, I think it's 5 lions, 2 leopards, 10 cheaters and 2 wild dogs. Food prep includes cutting up lots og veggies ... read more

Hi all We're just about to head out of Namibia into Botswana. For a place that we weren't going to see it has been amazing. Huge stretches of open lands full of incredibly beautiful landscapes and amazing sunsets every night. Oh and did we mention the animals ... we've seen everything from chipmunks to cheetahs to lions :) Just need to find some elephants and rhinos now. We've got 2 days camping in the bush coming up .. but as seasoned campers now it'll be a piece of cake ....hopefully! Sorry we have to run and catch a bus now so no time for animal photos..... we'll have to save that for the Wildlife Photography of the Year competiton in London, you'll all get invites :)... read more
