Day 4 - it was Saturday, so a "day of rest" for us. But with the Souks so close by, we had a great time wandering around, knowing that we couldn't buy anything (see explanation on day3). We had bought tickets to the Marrakech Museum and the Medersa on Friday, so we spent the morning visiting these very interesting places. Definitely not to be missed. Back to Mrs. Peretz for lunch, and then another walk around the Jemma El Fna, this time during the day. There were a few snake-charmers around, but not so many - maybe because it was November, and there weren't many tourists? Saturday evening, we had booked tickets to Ali's Fantazia. Again, everyone was very accommodating - the owner of our Riad had very decently driven over on Friday to book a ... read more

It's taken me much too long to get back to writing up this blog of Marrakech, but I'm here now, so off we go. Day 1: Tel Aviv - Barcelona - Marrakech I'll start with our first mistake - flying Iberia. We actually had a really cool route of Tel Aviv - Barcelona - Marrakech and back the same way. We chose Iberia because they had short connections, we could send our luggage all the way through, and we got BA miles :-) BUT ... two weeks before we left, Iberia called and said that the Barcelona - Marrakech flight was cancelled. They were going to route us through Casablanca, which meant taking an earlier flight from Tel Aviv and spending 8 hours in Barcelona. Ok, what can you do? Nothing much - just accept it. ... read more

Day 6 - today we were supposed to have a whole day in Marrakech, leaving the hotel at around 17:00, to catch our flight out at 19:10. But, as I told you on day 5 - Iberia screwed us again, and we had to leave our hotel at 12:00, so basically the whole day was shot. We wanted to make the best of it anyway, and enjoy the atmosphere and smells till the last second. So, we made an early start, to see the sights that we had not seen on Friday (remember? we went into the Souks and almost never left?) - so that meant the Saadian Tombs, El Bahia palace, and Palais Dar Si Said. We left the Riad, and looked for a taxi, but there were none to be had. Now, do you ... read more

Day 3 - and we had planned to go to the souk for just a couple of hours, HA HA HA. So, we started off a bit later than planned, since we were just dead from the previous day. Two of our party wanted to buy leather jackets, so our first stop was a leather goods factory about 1 minute walk from our Riad. As I've said before, there was 6 of us, and we ordered 11 items of clothing - mostly jackets and skirts !!! Now, it was Friday 11:00 when we finally left the factory, they don't work on Sundays, and on Monday at 12:00, they were all ready, even after last minute adjustments. The prices were more than reasonable (590 Euro for 2 jackets and a suede skirt), we got exactly what we ... read more

Day 2 - Jeep trip from Marrakech to the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, Telouet, Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, and back .... Off we went on our jeep trip into the Atlas mountains. We discovered quite early on that sitting in the back of a 7-seater jeep, travelling at 80 kph, is not a huge lot of fun, so we had quite a lot of stops for changing places, and for getting rid of our breakfast, snack, lunch, etc. .... As I say, this trip is not for the faint-hearted. The views are amazing, and if you are into narrow trails on the edge of a ravine, with two-way traffic - then this is JUST what you want to do for a day or two :-) We were told that this trail is part of the Paris-Dakar race, and now ... read more

Day 5 - This was going to be another day with too many hours in the jeep, but we had been told that Marrakech to Essaouira (which means "beautiful picture", and is the modern name for Mogador) would be about 2.5 hours, and completely straight with no twists and turns and no ups and downs. In fact, that was correct, and we didn't really suffer on the way, except for my poor husband, who really got bad food poisoning the previous night. We got off on the left foot, as I received a phone call at 8:00 in the morning. Who was it from? Can you guess? Yes, it was Iberia again - telling me that tomorrow's flight home from Marrakech to Barcelona had been cancelled, and they were putting us on a flight out of ... read more

We are nearing the one month mark of our return from Morocco, and so we turn to these: images that keep us close to an experience that is quickly fading from our daily reality. We still sometimes say "shokran" instead of "thankyou," and will occassionally burst into giggles while saying "Scuse me" and recalling the sweet way Tahara insistently repeated her five-word English vocabulary. But it is difficult to keep a daily vigil of remembrance of Morocco when we are immersed in a completely different context, where characters like Omar or patterns of daily life (like waking up to the dawn call of prayer) are entirely absent. So we get along with our lives, waiting for an invitation to Siham's wedding or any other excuse to go back, turning to these in the meantime. Photos of ... read more

I like to think I got to the Sahara! Well, I'm not a long way from it. Erg Chebbi has plenty to offer and is much more than just an intro to the desert experience: beautiful fine golden sand, the highest dunes in Morocco, friendly accommodation... It was worth it delaying my trip from Todra to come to Merzouga with Rosa, Jorge and Abdul. After getting my bike's wheels stuck on the track and splitting from the group going back to the tarmac road, we met again at a crossroads and spent the eve with the black musicians in a very welcoming community of Sudanese ex-slaves. Their music is so strong, with repetitive verses like a mantra which made me feel a bit drugged, in a trance. We had hardly eaten anything during the day and ... read more

The first day of our trip consisted of waking up at 3 am. I dont want to ever wake up that early again. We made it safely to Girona and had only been out of the bus station maybe 2 minutes when we needed to cross the street. I was the last one of the four of walking when BAM!!! All of a sudden I am on all fours in the middle of the cross walk and cant get up because my pack was starting to fall over my head. Talk about starting the trip off on the right foot, I couldnt even stay on my feet. Then as soon as I get up this woman rushes over and speaks rapidly in Catalon and I cant understand a word she is saying so I muster the ... read more

Rabat and Casablanca got placed on our agenda not so much because we wanted to see them as much as they were in our way, their positions on the Atlantic making them unavoidable if we wanted to follow the coast road south. Both turned out to have their own interest (or are we simply interestable?) making them worth the few days we spent in each. Rabat was the logical place to meet the coast on way west from Meknes, especially since we'd timed our arrival to coincide with a big storm blowing in off the Atlantic. We arrived ready to hunker down at the Hotel Splendide, picked from the Lonely Planet as a good compromise between its location in the downtown area and its proximity to the medina - plus the price, natch', which yielded a ... read more
