Morocco Day 8 Another day for moving on today so this morning we left Caroline and Les Jardins de Skoura for the High Atlas mountains above Marakesh. One of the first towns we went through was Ouarzazate or the Hollywood of Morocco. The town and the surrounding area are where quite a few Hollywood films have been made including Gladiator. Not long after leaving Ouarzazate we left the main route through the mountains for the old road through the Oued Mellet valley. This spectacular road is only passable by 4X4 according to our guidebooks but no one has ever bothered to inform the locals as they potter about in their Mercedes taxis and bashed up old Peugeots and Renaults. The route has two fantastic Kasbahs, the first one at Ait Benhaddou is only accessible on foot ... read more

Ait Benhaddou Of all the southern kasbahs we saw, this one was the most impressive. If you think that you’ve seen it before, don’t be surprised. It’s been featured in over six films and many fashion shoots. The main gateway which seems so well preserved, was actually restored by a film company. In the past this was a major stop on the gold route between Marrakech and the Sahara. In times of siege the inhabitants would withdraw to the fortified Agadir (the walls offered little protection – they could be destroyed simply by diverting the stream to run beneath them). In peacetime the valley was farmed as it is today, although tourists have replaced gold as the village’s main source of income. Kids wait for visitors crossing the valley, offering to show off their houses. I ... read more

On Saturday, a group of volunteers and I took a jeep to the mountains; a weekend project to volunteer with Berber children in the mountain. The cramp journey in a tired taxi did not dampen our spirits as we watched the mountain range loom larger and larger. I forgotten how green nature is (living in a concrete place like Manchester). We swapped taxis for a jeep to go up the mountain range, with passengers on top of the roof. However, we werent allowed to do so (something about volunteer insurance...) We were dropped off at the side of the road and walked down slopes, rock formations, clear streams to reach a traditional Berber home. The place was made of concrete with a 5 rooms: one room to recieve guests, one cooking area, one storage room, and ... read more

I decided to visit my friend Rebecca, who was in Peace Corps with me and is still here since she extended her service a year. Becky lives in another town close to Marrakech and I used to travel from Kelaa to her site in Ait Ourir almost every month. Maryam woke me up in the morning around 11:30. It had been another hot, sleepless night. When I looked out the door of my room into the central living room I saw all the furniture had been moved. It was washing day. From the cleanliness of Boise it’s hard to understand just how much dirt the Sahara produces, but imagine that southern France is often blanketed by dust blown north from the North African desert. Satellite images have documented swirling clouds of sand and dust far out ... read more

For the New Year (by the Islamic calendar) I went to visit another volunteer who lives in the Marrakech region. She had planned a hike with some of her students and we left town, headed for the Atlas foothills. Her town is right at the base of the mountains, though at low enough elevation that it was still warm in the afternoon sun. We didn't have to worry about the new snow they got up at higher elevations. We had a good dozen kids when we started out, though some dropped off and others joined on as we walked along. It was fun for me to get out of town and hike out in the hills. I have been in the Atlas far less than I had hoped when I arrived here. After going uphill for ... read more
