On the drive from Chitemba Beach to Kandi Beach we stopped at a local market - Mzuzu Market to purchase an outfit for another person on the truck. The is for a dressing up night we have planned at Victoria Falls. As soon as we left the truck to go into the market the skies opened up above us and rain like I have never seen before came down and soaked us to the skin. As soon as the locals saw us coming it seemed they knew what we were after. Secret bin liners of clothes were hauled out from underneath tables and presented to us. On offer were things like leopard print mini skirts with matching miniature tops, long sparkly dresses, see through 80' style blouses with shoulder pads, dresses which wouldn't look out of ... read more

There have been some great names in the history of football but no team will go down in history quite like the winning team in the match held in a small village called Kandi. On the winning side were Eric Jong (Brilliant Orange) Josh (Kenyan and our driver) Julius Caeser, Winston Churchill, Georgy Porgy, and Cisco all representing Malawi. Donald Duck choose to remain on the side.It quickly became apparent that to make things a bit easier for the muzungu (whites) the locals take on more international names which are often bizarre. When we were invited down to the village to play footie we jumped at the chance (sort of - the previous nights beach drumming party had left us a little fragile). Zoe volunteered to be soccer mum and brought the oranges for half time ... read more

Malawi Malawi is known as the ’warm' heart of Africa and is known for its peaceful beaches and its friendly people. As the truck traveled down we pass numerous villages following the shores of Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi is approximately 579 km long and is 75 km wide at its widest point. As its total area is almost 30,000km² it is the 3rd largest fresh water lake in Africa and due to its size it is quite often regarded as a sea. The next few days are spent at a small resort called Kandi beach. Due to its hundreds of species of fish, the main activity here is diving and after Zanzibar I was keen to get involved. The first dive to acclimatise to fresh water and myself and my dive buddy Kris view a lot ... read more

The title of today's blog means "Hurry, hurry has no blessings". It would be good if one could apply this to this trip but sometimes there is not even a hint of "pole pole" (slowly, slowly). Occasionally we have to cover quite long distances and there is no question of having the one or other photo stop. It's just shooting out of the truck window and everyone knows that those snaps could as well be deleted right away. But this is really the only thing which is regrettable. Did I mention the food yet? We are actually roasting a whole (small) pig on a spit for tonight's dinner! I have just come back from a short stroll along the beach of Lake Malawi. The lake is huge! The waves come swishing in and the night before ... read more

Well it's been a while since the last post. We've been busy and the internet cafes have become hard to come by. After Vic Falls, we crossed into Zambia and paid a hefty $135 visa fee for Americans. Zimbabwe was nice but the situation there is pretty awful. It is illegal for foreigners to use the local money so we got ripped off for everything ($10 for a small dinner). Our first stop in Zambia was Livingstone where we met our tourmates for the second half of the tour. All that was left from the first half was me, Erika from Vancouver, Nicole from LA, Steve from San Diego, Nichola from England, Nadine from Mexico, and Hubert from the Netherlands. We didn't really see much of Zambia. We spent two consecutive very long days of driving, ... read more

PART II (continued from Part I) After breakfast we set out to Mzuzu, Malawi's third city, for the nation's big Independence Day celebration, which this year was being held in Mzuzu's soccer stadium. We had no idea what we were in for, whether we would get in, and whether it would be worth it...but we were going! It was a pleasant hour-long drive through a rubber-tree forest. Amazingly, you can actually smell rubber as you're driving through it! And local kids sell rubber balls all along the drive. Mzuzu is a very small but pretty town; all the streets President Bingu Wa Mutharika passed down were decked out with Malawian flags (and scores of police). At the stadium there were huge lines wrapped around the stadium, and lots of groups of women decked out in their ... read more

PART I Having enjoyed Kande Beach so much the first time, Mike and Lesley and I decided to take a trip back there on Friday, for a three-day weekend, this time with our friends Sebastien, John Paul, and Tayllor (who came Saturday). We had two holidays to celebrate: American independence on July 4, and Malawian independence on July 6! The five of us piled into my little car and we headed out of Lilongwe around 6pm, making it to Kande at the reasonable hour of 10pm. We had a celebratory springbok shot and then sat on the beach for a while, enjoying that amazing view of the stars you can only get when you’re in such a remote place. Kande is nothing more than a tiny village built on a perfect stretch of white beach, with ... read more

Still moving South we passed a latex plantation on the way which was very cool. We also went to a craft market which had really nice stuff. Their is a lot of woodwork, it's hard for me to buy though because I am always unsure about what I will be able to get back into Australia. Also negotiating a price is difficult because I'm not willing to part with my socks! They'll take everything and anything! Rather than money they prefer goods ie your clothes, shoes. It's quite weird when you say how much is this?, the seller replies "I need a pair of shorts, do you have shorts?" The sellers were very aggressive but as Riaan said they are just on the cusp of high season and some of them might have only made a ... read more

After an exhausting week of interviews, I was ready to set off for the lake Friday afternoon with my new Canadian colleagues Mike and Lesley, a couple of lefties like me . Mind you, I hadn’t had my car for that long, and granted, it is older than I was when I took my SATs, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for it to die on me at 2pm as I was just about to leave work to pick them up! Why do things like that always happen at the worst possible moment? Anyway, this happened at the RSD Unit, which is located in a little complex where, for one reason or another, there are lots and lots of men loitering about during the daytime. The moment they noticed my distressing situation, about twenty of them came ... read more
