My turn to write, hence the delay. We´re in Rio- Em´s asleep in our room and i´m sat on a bony stool typing this- tough life. Since Em last wrote we´ve got through a fair bit, but Zanzibar has to be one of the most amazing places we´ve been. I got ill on rice loads- Uncle Ben had me over a barrel for a couple of nights. Actually we both got ill a fair bit at the start as Em got heatstroke- that week was a bit like listening to your favourite song whilst getting regularly punched in the teeth- but Zanzibar was pretty special. It´s a paradise island where people live on so little but you see more smiles there in 5 mins than you do in 5 days in London- when we finally get ... read more

We spent a few days by Lake Malawi, which was incredible. The lake is so big that it looks like the sea, because you can't see the other side of it, and there are waves. The only difference is that is it fresh water, so much nicer to swim in! The first night was spent at Chitimba beach, were a few of us went for a walk to a clothes market but never really made it because we got distracted by loads of wee children to ran out to see us and hold our hands and get swung upside down between us. They loved getting their photos taken and looking at themselves on our camera. It was an incredible and unexpected half hour! Our next night was further south in Kande Beach, which had it's own ... read more

After having the truck fixed we headed south to Malawi, given the fact we'd lost a night due to the breakdown we spent one night less in Chitimba and so only really stayed overnight, though we did get the chance to go to a witch doctor, who predicted that both Rhian and I would have long happy lives and we'd get married and have two children, a boy then a girl. The good doctor was wiling to elaborate further, though it seems the spirits had an entrance fee for further delving into the knowledge pool. We then headed further south to Kandi beach on the shores of Lake Malawi, We upgraded from our tent to a more luxury beach cottage and spent three nights here. Whilst here we went on a village walk and spoke to ... read more

Day 15 - Chitimba (Malawi) - 13/8/09 Another early start, this time around 0600. Found my flip flops; they were left outside my tent. Climbed onto the great big green truck for now, the almost routine long drive though the African bush, was really looking forward to reaching another country, country number 3, Malawi. Again I fell asleep for a couple of hours, then when I was awoken by the sun beams burning my legs though the windows, finished reading my book, which I then swapped with Duncan. He was reading Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's Long Way Down. It seemed, given where I was almost fitting that I should be reading it. I managed to knock back 100 pages pretty quickly then we got some card games going. We counted up how many Tanzanian Shillings ... read more

On July 9th, we crossed the boarder into Malawi. This was very easy boarder crossing. The first city that we went to was Chitimba. The campsite was right on Lake Malawi, which is also known as the calendar lake, because it is 365 miles long and 52 miles across. I went for a 32km walk (about 20 miles round trip) up this mountain/hill to get to a town called Livingstone. I have to admit, I barely made it to the top! I need to introduce more cardio into my life: sad. Livingstone is just a small town that was developed in hopes of introducing Christianity to help end slavery. The reason it was put on top of this mountain was because it is colder in higher elevations and therefore people would not get sick from malaria. ... read more

Day 282 (17/1/09) Rise and shine at 4.30am for a earliest start to date and our longest DRIVE DAY! Happy with our decision to hire a Banda for the night and not tackle our tents to the ground in the dark we boarded the truck with thirteen hours ahead of us! Not surprisingly, the truck was a little quieter than usual. We passed time napping, reading, watching movies on the IPOD, playing trivial pursuit and spotting wild life as we passed through Luangwa National Park. We passed a number of elephants and giraffes roaming close to the road, the usual mischievous baboons and herds of gazelle and zebra making it a very entertaining ride. We finally arrived at our Bush Camping spot for the night, where we set up our tents along a dirt road in ... read more

Well, many lessons have been learned in the past few days! Firstly, when it rains in Southern Tanzania, it REALLY rains! Not a good idea to try and put tents up in that kind of downpour! Also when you are warned that roads may be rough during the rainy season and that it might be better to stick to the tarred roads, listen!! Still we made it through Tanzania and stayed at a lovely place between Iringa and Mafinga (I LOVE that name Sal..almost better than De Aar!) Highly recommended to those following us. Called Kisolanza Farm. Comes complete with cottages etc for when it is really raining. Another lesson learnt in Tanzania was that police men own speed guns!!! 20,000 Tsh lighter we were on our way..... We crossed the border into Malawi very smoothly ... read more

Our second day at Kande Beach. At nine we were picked up by our guide and about 20-30 young men! The young guy who latched onto me was actually rather nice and was called Fabulous (!). We walked through the villiage to the water pump accompanied by lots of sticky, barefoot children. There was a talk abour the water supply but I didnt hear it because I was distracted my some children and was taking photos. We then moved to a little house, which was the main guide's, and he explained about village life and the chief and how the houses were built. It was interesting but 3 people were living in a house that was only a little larger than Dad's greenhouse! There was very lkittle in the house, but it was, I suppose, comfortable ... read more

Lieve allemaal! ... read more

Awoke to a bright morning and packed away the tent. A short while later, we travelled to Kande Beach, which took a couple of hours. We had fresh mangos for elevenses, which were lovely and juicy. We passed through hundreds of villages and so many children gave us toothy grins and waved hands. It rained quite heavily as we approached the beach, but it was bright ans sunny as we pulled up. It was paradise! Blue crystal clear water as far as the horizons and whote sand crunching underfoot. The lake was so warm but a welcome relief from the sun. I wriggled my toes in the water and lay in the sun for a while. I treated myself to a single room. It was a wicker room with double doors onto the beachfront. There was ... read more
