Hello everyone from the shores of beautiful Lake Malawi! Two days of horrible driving, including one bushcamp (camp in the middle of the road in a pineforest) brought us here from Dar es Salaam. We arrived late at night, and five minutes before entering the campsite we got stuck on a sandy road. We had to dig the truck out and push the feckin 16 tons, but this is Africa, what can you do? I spent the last two days lazing on the beach, wave riding and sunbathing. Lake Malawi is so big that you cannot make out the opposite shore. Just like the beautiful Indian Ocean, it has got white sandy beaches and beautiful clear water. The weather had been quite stormy when we arrived, and so the waves were pretty big for a lake ... read more

We left Livingstone a day earlier than expected to give ourselves more time later on the tour. Our first day after Livingstone involved a fair bit of driving to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. We didn't spend much time in town as it was getting late so we went on to the campsite which seemed to be breeding very small dogs, which followed us around the campsite. Our next day was a full day of driving, arriving at Chipata in the evening. We only made one stop at a few market stalls where we spoke to a man who claimed Peter Crouch had been through yesterday! The following day we headed across the border from Zambia into Malawi, a small country stretching up lake Malawi. We ploughed on to the campsite which was situated on the ... read more

Hi from Malawi!!! Well since we last updated the blog we have been fortunate enough to be spending a lot of time at the beach! Nice!!! Previously I mentioned we were on Zanzibar island - what a crazy 3 days that was. As you can imagine we were over the moon at spending three nights in beach bungalows - it was like real life civilation with an ensuite including shower and everything! (the water was cold but we have definitely mastered the limb by limb washing process required for all cold showers). A highlight on Zanzibar was the team booze cruise on the second night. We were picked up from the shore on this mmm boat type thing (called a Dhow or Dow or something) that had a sail and half a second level and spent ... read more

Lake Malawi Drove from our overnight stop in Iringa to Lake Malawi, passing through Mbeya and Mikumi National Park. Unfortunately Rach developed the super squits in the afternoon, which isn't pleasant when you're on a truck for hours. Driving through the mountains, Lake Malawi emerged as a huge, sparkling blue expanse of water. We arrived at a beachside campsite at the northern tip of the lake for an overnight stop. Went for a walk along the beach and got accosted by a bunch of endearing little boys who were playing football. They were proper little businessmen, befriending you so you'll buy their postcards or bracelets. Kandi Beach No chance to lie in thanks to a persistent cockerel crowing at 5am. We could have cheerfully wrung its neck! With Rach pumped full of imodium, we journeyed ... read more

Hi all! Back again for another instalment, again in diary format for ease of viewing. 06/12/06 - Livingstone - Zambia Quad biking was first on the list for this morning and it was really really good fun. Vik was a bit wary at first, but soon got the hang of burning round on our 250cc quads. The guy that took us was a real giggle and kept doing stunts on 2 wheels and doing doughnuts in the sand. Of course Rik took this as a personal challenge and soon disappeared into a cloud of dust and sand as he perfected his spinning technique hehe. Vik decided doughnutting wasn't her thing and just rode up and down looking good for a while. Of all the ironies, guess who broke their quad though... Rik pushing it through its ... read more

Hi folks, We've covered a lot of miles since our last blog. We last caught up when we were in Stone town, Zanzibar. The town has many phrases that can describe it, most of which end with the word 'hole'! Thankfully, after seeing Freddie Mercury's birthplace and getting hastled by the locals, we headed to the north of the island for two days and nights in the sun on the beach. Resort was nice and the weather was boiling, the Indian ocean was turquoise and warm. Linz managed to get some sea urchine spines in her foot at low tide one of the days and we did manage to get stuck at one of the neighbouring villages when the tide came in. After much sun burn we flew back to Dar Es Salaam for one night ... read more

Day 94: Thursday, August 24: Kendwa, Zanzibar Today was a pretty relaxing day. Slept in, hung out at the bar and on the beach, a few games of beach volleyball and dinner on the beach as well. Also walked up to the village, checked out the locals and then headed back down the beach. Got a piece of artwork from a local as well. Otherwise, just not much to report. A great day. Day 95: Friday, August 25: Kendwa, Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Got up late again (last time :( ), got in a few more games of beach volleyball, then headed back to the port and took the ferry back to the mainland. The ferry was late, but we managed with a few popcycles and made it back to the campsite pretty late. ... read more
