I thought it was about time I wrote something about my work, seeing as its the reason I'm here. I've been mainly working in Top Baby class, which is children aged about 5-6yrs. most lessons the teacher will take and the kids will come to me to mark their work ango for help. it's the cutest thing whthe they get everything right and I write a 'good work' or ':)' on their work they go dancing around showing all their classmates with the biggest grins on their faces, one little boy George even has a little dance he does! haha. it can get very frustrating sometimes trying to explain to them what they've done wrong or the right answer, especially in lessons like social studies where we do things like matching the word to the picture ... read more

So much has happened in my first two weeks I'm Kenya I don't know where to start! I arrived in Nairobi exactly two weeks and one day ago now, to see just tent after tent on the tarmac for the international arrivals and immigration! There was a fire a few months ago that took out the arrivals terminal so that made for a bit of a shocking arrival. But I was met by Paul from Projects Abroad and taken with two other volunteers to a guest house in Nairobi with no problems at all. Throughout the night something like seven other volunteers arrived from various different countries and flights, it was great to be with so many other people who had just arrived to share all the new sights with and finally meet those I'd been ... read more

So as my time here in Kenya is winding down and I prepare for my next part of my adventure, I started to realize there were some things that I wanted to be sure to see before I leave Africa. And thus, Sam and I decided to venture off and go on our own little safari to see some new animals. We set off to hit three main lakes in Kenya: Nakuru, Bogoria, and Baringo, all of which had a little something special to offer. However, being a foreigner sometimes has its downsides, and in this case, ridiculous entry fees. At our first stop in Lake Nakuru, Sam paid a mere 300 shillings ($3.50) while my tickets was 74,000 ($75). Since I'm coming to the end of my trip and thus the end of my money, ... read more

This isn’t a touristic Masai experience at all… but this is the circle of life where life and death is happening on a regular basis, and you have to struggle to survive… like Darwin said: “The strongest will survive” and this is how it goes in middle of the Savanna. The conception of “living” isn’t existing because you have to survive and taken wrong path could lead you to death. Living takes a lot of effort and you’ll understand that nothing is easy in middle of Savanna where wild animals are going on instincts and trying to survive as well. So it wouldn’t help to talk nicely and friendly, and get a compromise with a lion or an elephant in the middle of nowhere… you are just a small human being and a tasty bite for ... read more

... read more

Matatu- mini bus/ public transport here in Kenya... only way I can describe is like the clowns in a car trick. When it looks full people find space. The conductors elegantly and skillfully hope in and out, contort their bodies to fit around the doors, like skilled tube riders, and whilst on the move easily slide open the doors! Nuts but an experience.... that was half an hour away to town.... tomorrow one to Nairobi, I am told however they can't overcrowd those, small mercies! The older boys are back from school for Easter, yesterday Sammy took me on a bike ride- he had been back all of an hour before we cycled to the garage to see some of the boys working (the garage is part of Sure 24) then went off on an adventure ... read more

New visitors= a new chance to go to the dump site and it was a lot worse today. With the start of the Long Rains the smoke and burning plastic were gone and the stench of rubbish and abundance of flies were so prominent. This is the comic relief style Africa where small children are so unphased by the swarms of flies on them and their clothes, hands and feet are so grubby that most British parents would have a fit and begin attacking them with Ariel and Dettol. This is the place where even the bin men drive around like kings, transporting rubbish in garbage trucks but knowing that what they carry is literally a life line for the people that live there. All it is is the waste of Nakuru, but it is worth ... read more

So the lovely Debs and Garry have been here for the last 2 weeks, Deborah has been here before, she then went home raised money and returned to build the boys a library... So 2 days ago we were at the lets decorate stage... YAY Chai (tea) on tap, paint brushes in hand we gleefully set about decorating as if it were a leisurely Sunday afternoon. I say we... Debs, Garry, Jamie and Grace had all started a day before however I was some what busy so unable to help. So I swanned up on Wednesday morning to paint the rays off the sunshine :) Such an amazing day and we got a lot done, 2nd coats needed but on with the floor paint :) 12 hours to dry painting at 6pm no problem... except the ... read more

First Week in Nakuru We got a bus thing from Nairobi in the morning. Waited about an hour for it to arrive with our building manager Ken. Got begged on by about 5 different street men, one of them had one eye and wasn't very happy with me. He sort of scratched his arm, and then threw it at me, then chanted something. Pretty sure it was some sort of curse, Matt no longer wanted to travel with me. Ken said if it was night time he probably would have mugged me. Sweet. First day of volunteering started in the morning with a budda-budda ride into the slum. Its a bike with a cushion on the back and costs about 30p. Pretty fun but there brakes don't really work. All the kids run out and wave ... read more
