Today is an exercise in patience. Since I needed money, Bondo was not an option - no ATM, and no getting cash from a bank with my Visa charge card. So, must go to larger city of Kisumu. My new roommate, Jens (pronounced Yens), a 30 year old graduate student from Denmark, has come along. While here, I will get some groceries for my hostess from the large supermarket, Nakumatt. My usual escort, Gaya grandson Roy, is in Nairobi for a while, but I know my way around to the area I come to for ATM, computer, and shops, so no problem. Plus, with Jens coming along, at least will have a partner. And, no problem anyway - everyone is happy to give directions, and could always take a boda boda (bicycle taxi) or tuktuk (3 ... read more

Greetings all! My secondary school (boys high school) class was changed from Monday to Saturday, due to national exams this week and next. The term ends next week, with the new school year beginning in January. Graduates will know results in February, which is their basis for national university eligibility (unless wealthy or influential). Local public school students have the poorest facilities and other resources, like the Majiwa Secondary School (no electricity, computers, etc.), so even the top students have little chance of getting a university spot. I'm in Kisumu (city) today for services not available in Bondo (smaller town near the village) - ATM, supermarket, immigration office. Good news - I can renew my visa in Kisumu, instead of taking the long, bumpy bus ride to Nairobi. On January 21, when I must renew, I ... read more

Hello all! Almost 2 weeks here now, and so much to report and describe. I will not adequately do so - only a fraction. I am finally getting into writing a journal, which I have done before. But, I have two journals, one a grad gift from some co-workers at one of my Bastyr workstudy jobs, and one from Kate, for this trip. So, my writing will be scrambled, and soon I hope to be caught up and more chronilogical for you. In addition, I apologize for repeating anything - hopefully, that will also soon end. First, greetings to all, and hope all is well. Thank you for the many messages that I greatly enjoyed. Next, I would like to provide some backfill for those who are not familiar with my involvement here. I am here ... read more

Thanks to my friend, Mary Treatman of Allentown, PA, for helping me negotiate and enjoy Lone, Dublin, Galway, and the Irish countrysides of Connemara and the Burren. Mary is back home, and I am now in Kenya. I was unnecessarily concerned about what to wear for arrival in Nairobi. At my departure gate, most travelers were in casual clothes - jeans, cargo pants, etc. Two planes were leaving for Kenya nearly the same time, so plenty of travelers going my way. I did not know at the time that a fellow Village Volunteer (VV), named Suzanne from Vancouver, BC was also on the flight. As it turned out, my clothes were completely acceptable upon arrival, both for custom and weather, which outside in the night was mild. The 8 plus hour flight to Nairobi wnet fairly ... read more

So after the seclusion and peaceful quietude of Kakamega forest reserve, we find ourselves at Kisumu bus station. Kisumu is a fairly big towm in Western Kenya, on Lake Victoria. For us it was a stop off en route to the Ugandan border, somewhere to dry out our stuff after Kakamega. Once we had wrestled our bags from another drunk Mr. Grabalot who liked to touch our sacks, fnarr. We plumped for "Kisumu Beach Resort". Sounded good to us. Lonely Planet describes the 'beach resort' as 'a bit scruffy', no really Lonely Planet, thanks. The staff seem to be permanently ON another planet, merely asking for something produces a reaction somewhere between confusion and alarm, resulting in much repetition ("two Cokes please", "Cola?", "Yes please", uncomfortable pause...... "So two cokes then".... "Yes"...Pause... "So we would like ... read more

Oh my goodness! Thanks to all who have posted a comment. It's great to hear from back home during such a busy trip. So I'm in charge of this next entry, which is great since Todd is in our hotel room doing my laundry! We are currently at the Utalii Hotel in Nairobi but it will be a short stay as we leave tomorrow for a 3-day safari on the Serengetti. We look forward to some relaxation time after our visit to Bumala. Last Tuesday we flew in to Bumala which is a small rural town right on the western border next to Uganda. This is where Charles currently runs a school for children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. There are 90 children in total and the school has baby class, class ... read more

Throughout our trip, from start to finish, the one thing that gave our group its strength was prayer. “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." - Matthew 18:20. We came together as a team and reached out to Kenya in His name. The five day visit to Kisumu was by far my most powerful experience. God not only worked through us, but worked on us. That is the beautiful thing about a mission trip. It strengthens your faith and touches your heart just as much as it does those you encounter. The city of Kisumu (200 miles northwest of Nairobi) is the third largest in Kenya and rests along the shores of Lake Victoria, the second largest freshwater lake in the world (after Lake Superior in North America). ... read more

A big THANK YOU is in order!!! And a small celebration for the success of my little endeavor to help a handful of homeless children here in Kenya. Unfortunately, the grave issues of poverty, the AIDS crisis and a shortage of food supply have left many children here without parents or without a home that can support them and in this vast country children can easily go unaccounted for. There is much work being done to help these youth but it is a constant struggle for all who have given themselves fully to this work. It is surprising how far a little help from just a handful of people can go. But what surprised me most, (although I really shouldn’t be so shocked as I know that all of you are amazing people!!) was the ... read more

This is for the Children..... I arrived in Kisii Town after a relaxing week in Naivasha tired, hungry, desperate for a pee and a bath only to have another hours drive back towards Naivasha and out into the bush along bumpy unpaved roads. But the ever rolling hills of the Kisii Highlands are breath taking and the views as you drive are able to ease your mind away from any irritations. As I gazed out the window, fillings my lungs with the fresh highland air, I saw a bit of Jamaica. In this new place that would serve as my home for the next four weeks I found a bit of the beauty of home and I half expected to see Bromley at the top of the next hill, just round the corner... dogs, family ... read more

We used to organise running races for the local kids on saturdays. The last few weeks we have been organising some other games for them. I think they love playing. Some games were really fun and other games were a bit hard for them to get into. They really liked the poision ball where they had to dodge the ball that was thrown at them. We had to be very careful not to hit them on their heads. Some kids were really young about 3-4years, so we didn't want to knock them out senseless. Any way, it was really nice to see them all have a good laugh at their friends and as well as themselves. ... read more
