My last day in Meru consisted of preaching, attending a CD release party, and DRIVING!!!! It sounds like a simple task but it truly is hard when everything is backwards hahahahahaha Tomorrow we leave from Nairobi to fly to Massi Mara to start our safari... I am very excited :))) Today has undoubtedly been the funnest day and I will never forget Africa!!! Love and miss yall James ... read more

Yesterday was pretty uneventful... went and toured the hospital and a church that the grapevine church paid to have built. Today we spent the day with the aids orphans participating in a fun day program they were putting on we had a soccer tournament, which the team of white people plus 3 or 4 Kenyans won :), and we gave them mosquito nets , blankets, and shirts. Its really uplifting giving to people who truly have nothing and are completely innocent. After that we went to a girls boarding school for high school, get three white decently cute guys in an environment like that and its insanely interesting. This is truly a life changing expiration. :) Things I’ve learned: 1. Smile.... life is good, even when you’re in extreme poverty. 2. Be thankful for what god ... read more

After a night of worrying weather or not I was fully covered by the mesquito net was slightly discomforting but I slept well considering I was so dog tired from the activities of the day, reguardless of my sleep this morning was great. We went to a church here in meru which had about 450 in the first service which was the english speeking service and then after a short intermission we went back to another service which was in Kimeru and had slightly less people. Although most of the service was in another language it was so apparent that Gods presssence was there and that he was smiling apon the people of this place. They fed us lunch and we made some good friends but after that we came back to the compond and just ... read more

Oops it became a really long story, so here are some highlights and things that got my attention. I understand that not all of you want to read the entire story ;) For pictures I refer to facebook :) - peeling 25 kg of cassava every morning is very boring, but the children like it and it's really good to see them eating with a smile on their face! - kenyan drivers are crazy, they overtake anytime, anywhere. which even gets Elise to shout: fuck you! asshole! while rasing her middle finger. liking my supervisor. - becoming a real hero when it comes to big cockroaches and other stuff, armed with my flipflops and insectiside. - study is going well, although our time schedule is very tight, and being in Africa doesn't really make it go ... read more

First Impressions I'm in Kenyaaa! Wednesday morning, at around 4.00 we safely arrived in Nairobi. We then took a cab into town and checked in at some dogy hotel recommended by our cab driver. Apart from being a bit dodgy, dark, having little air in the room and a few cockroaches it was quite a nice place :) I shared a room with Gabriel, luckily otherwise I would have felt a bit unsafe, although there were some guards in the hotel. Our hope was to move to Kibwezi the same day, but eventually we didnt leave untill yesterday around 17.00. So we've spent almost two days in Nairobi, very busy city, packed with people and matatu's (small vans which are extensively used for transportation). In the beginning I had to get used to the city, and ... read more

It was a glorious morning – breezy and in the low 70s and there were lots of animals out. Unfortunately, no predators. We were with Stephanie and Carol; Benjamin was our driver.First off was a gerenuk, standing on its hind-legs eating breakfast. Closely behind was a herd of zebra and enough giraffes to satisfy even me. We saw a crocodile, an elephant and a lot of birds that excited Barcy. We passed two tent camps … where some people stay to get the authentic African safari experience. Bah humbug. Some are elegant camps and some look just like the 4-pole kind we have used on the Current ... read more

Geo: 0.598744, 37.4991DAY NINE (Saturday, September 12, 2009)More than lions & tigers & bears … oh, myOK, I like Amboseli much better today. I've decided the road in here made me so cranky that I couldn't like anything yesterday. This morning was different. As I was brushing my teeth, I heard branches cracking right outside my window. I opened the drapes and about 30' from my window were 8 elephants parading to the water right by our room. They stopped, drank and ate. Very fun to have this going on so close by.Our game drive left before dawn so we could see all the animals on the move. And we did that. We had Mike and Mary Ann Schuermann with us again, which is always a hoot. All the regulars were out (zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, hippos, Cape ... read more

We leave early the following morning, the hotel security guard clearly sniffing around for an unwarranted "tip". It's more than a thousand metres above sea level here, and I have to wear my fleece until the sun rises, at which point the temperature rockets and I'm soon sweating. The road is possibly even worse than before. Patrik has seemed an independent, self-sufficient, type, and has said that this trans-Africa crossing has been a dream of his for a while, but I decide to offer to share the driving just for manners' sake. I'm surprised when he immediately accepts. I haven't done much driving for years, and certainly not in a Landrover locked in 4WD on a bumpy, skiddy surface, which becomes apparent just seconds into my stint when an overenthusiastic burst of acceleration sends us slewing ... read more

Two hours after my truck south is cancelled, there is banging on my room door and I am told that a private vehicle has arrived. I head outside to find a Landrover that I've seen somewhere before, probably Ethiopia. It's driven by a Swiss guy, Patrik, who is overlanding from Switzerland to Cape Town and he says he is happy to take a passenger - he can't guarantee that he will be going all the way to Nairobi, but will definitely be going at least as far as Isiolo, which is fine by me. English is a language he doesn't like and which is perhaps his fourth best - indeed his friends had asked him how on earth he'd be able to travel through Africa with his ability being so poor - but, in that annoying ... read more
