I forgot to write about our house's private drumming lessons. Gidi, a member of the band Gouda which I talked about before, is trying to promote his private lessons. One of his friends agreed to use his fancy-shmancy camera gear to take some professional looking pictures of Gidi teaching a bunch of oborunis how to drum. So our entire house tried to look as candid as possible while learning how to drum. Gidi is actually an amazing teacher and is trying to find a way to get to the United States to that he can be with his fiance and get a job in a music department somewhere; thus we decided to help him out anyway we could.
Also, I had the chance to see Habib Koite last night in concert. He is a Malian singer who has an amazing band and tours all over the world. My parents have seen him twice in concert and I have seen him once at the University of Wisconsin. We have been listening to his music for about three years now and when I walked into my friend Owuo's house I heard Habib's music on his CD player. I asked him how he knew
about Habib and Owuo said that he had seen him in concert in Ghana last year. Then he informed me that he was coming to Ghana this month. When I looked at the program for Alliance France's concert season, it said that Habib Koite was going to play three days from then...you can imagine my surprise. So last night we loaded up a tro tro and headed to Alliance France an hour ahead of time to get seats. My friend Lizzy and I shared a bottle of Italian wine while we waited for the festivities began, and by the time the concert was to begin, the entire venue was packed with people from all over the world who were fans of Habib.
When the concert started, people went crazy. I knew that people liked him, but the Malian's who had seats reserved in front went absolutely crazy. All the Malian women were dressed in their traditional clothes and half way through the concert they all did their traditional dance on stage. Between songs Habib joked around with the audience, inviting us all to festivals in his hometown. By the end of the concert everyone was in front of the stage
dancing the night away.
When the concert ended Habib came out to sign autographs and pose for pictures. By the time that Lizzy, Owuo and I got to the front of the line, all the CD's were sold out and so we were not awarded an autograph...but I'm very proud to say that we did get pictures with him!!! I actually got to shake his hand and tell him how big of a fan my family and are of him...I was definitely star-struck! It was such a great time, I went to bed very happy last night.
