So, I can't believe how long it has taken me to find a computer that this blog website actually works with. I'm here now so here is an update. The last time I blogged was about 3 weeks ago and it has flown by. I'm now over half way through my 2 months here and its crazy to think I will be home in 4 weeks. I have stayed at the school I was at at the start of my time here and its been fantastic to see progress, albeit small. By no means have we transformed the school, but there are hints from the kids that we have made a positive impact. Doing tests in the morning for example on what we covered the day before, and seeing most of them getting it right is ... read more

Ok, so i'm alive! Only just. When we got picked up from the airport and the bloke said the roads may be a bit bumpy as there are roadworks, what he actually meant was that the roads hadn't been built yet, and the 4 hour journey would be horrific, especially in the middle of the night. Hey ho, I am here now and loving it. People here are amazing. They shout 'obruni' which means white person, as they never see them. Don't think this would fly the other way round in Brixton, but when the kids do it you kind of laugh. I went for a run the other morning and they followed me all the way, they are just so happy. The school I am teaching in is not as good. Its a desperately poor ... read more

It is difficult to explain why, but I am finding it hard to settle,I feel a bit like an alien on a new planet !! Don't get me wrong,I am really glad to be back and I been blown away by the welcome I have received by almost everyone. ( Explore employees - you will pleased to hear that I have a temp job lined up for 4 days next week so you won't see me for a while !! ) The blog was certainly a big success and reached a huge audience of all ages.It is nice to find out what a positive impact it has had and I am glad that I have been able ... read more

Hello I am now heading towards my last 24 hours here in the Kwahu region of Ghana as I leave for the airport tomorrow at 1pm.I have mixed feelings about my departure but will probably not fully appreciate what I have learnt etc until I have settled back home. Last Wednesday I went to Kumasi with Susan and I collected my passport with my extended visa.We were lucky to find a taxi driver who took us all the way to Kumasi for the same price as a tro tro. This meant a comfotable 2 hour journey straight through instead of a stop start one. Thursday and Friday I went into school and we finished the PE lesson on Friday with over 100 kids doing the Hokey Cokey - what a brilliant sight. The lessons go really smoothly now ... read more

............... be warned I fly home next Weds !! I have had a good week so lots to tell you all about. Last Weds the 3 day district sport competition started so Katie and I went to the stadium to cheer on 'our' children who were competing. We arrived at 9 and a track had been marked out in soot from fires. However,in true Ghana style nothing had really started by 10.30 so we headed to the internet for an hour. When we returned,we could hear whistles and cheers which was a positive sign.We watched some 400m heats and some of our kids ran,the highlight was 2nd place for one of the girls.Normally,400m would be one lap of a track but these kids ran twice round as we were told the track was only 200m.It definitely looked longer and ... read more

Hello again A funny week as everything was geared up for Easter.A lot of people in the Kwahu region actually live and work in Accra and Kumasi but they own properties here so everyone heads back for Easter. The local population increases by about a million people who come to party so it is like New Years Eve and Notting Hill Carnival all rolled into one. On Weds I turned up at school to be toled it was a holiday as the teachers all needed to apply for identity cards,it is all so random ! On Thurs,Katie and I took the older kids for P.E. again and had another great hour or so with them.Katie warmed them up with a rendition of 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes' and the we did the balloon 'over and under' game in teams. This ... read more

Hello I have had a busy week since I last did my blog so lots to tell you about. Katie and I decided that we would help at the Islamic school 3 times a week and this would include 2 sessions of PE.We went on Weds morning and sat in with the youngest class,P1.One of the teachers had not turned up so 2 classes were added together which meant almost 30 children crammed into 1 classroom,3/4 kids to one desk. Two teachers seemed to flit and out and most of the morning was spent in meetings with the odd 'parrot' lesson thrown in.Katie and I tried to do some singing with the children but most of them only speak a little English so it soon descended into chaos. We sent the kids out to play in the end ... read more

Sorry for the delay but the rain has started and we have had so many power cuts that internet access has been patchy to say the least ! I had managed to weigh myself while on my week off and converted the kilos into pounds last week.I weighed 8stone 12pounds so I had lost about 11 pounds, hence the title of todays blog !!I am pleased to say that I am now eating more and , touch wood, I feel fine so I might even make it over the 9 stone mark before I come home. I have now been here a week and a half and it is so different from Ashle.First of all, there are so many volunteers but they definitely fall into 2 camps-the first who are here to test out careers or share their ... read more

Apologies for the delay in posting my next blog, but I have had little or no access to the internet over the past week and a half. I have managed to download 13 pictures this time so they give you all a good flavour of what I have been up to. My last week whizzed past and I enjoyed some great training sessions especially with the juniors, some of whom made a big impression on me.Steph arrived on Thurs night,21st Feb,and one of the first things she said was 'You've lost weight!!' which confirmed my suspicions. We both made it to my last senior training session and I thanked the guys was allowing me to join them I promised to re visit next year if they won their division this season - watch this space !! Hello. I am writing from Africa. Right now - I'm writing by hand and then e-transposing - I am surrounded by banana and plantain trees riffling in the breeze; the smell of goat is in my nostrils; there is sun on my face and mud on my shoes; and free-range chickens are ranging pretty freely. (But before I continue: thanks to everyone who has written me since my first journal posting: family, friends, a couple strangers. Respectively, I love you, I like you, nice to meet you. Sorry I haven't responded to most people who are not my parents. Internet here is a fair bit slower than a slow boat sailing all the way around the world twice carrying bowling balls. It's slow. Three sent e-mails in an hour is an accomplishment. If you wish to ... read more
