I can't believe it's already Saturday again!!! The days here are so long but the weeks fly by. Last Sunday, brook, one of the other volunteers here wasn't feeling so hot. We all have gotten on and off sick with GI bugs here and there, but she actually spiked a fever so we decided to go to the clinic. Sundays are days of worship here- mass on Sunday typically goes from 9am to 1 or 2 pm and is basically a giant party- lots of singing and dancing. I wish church was like that at home! Anyways, because it was Sunday there was only one nurse, a friend of ours named Francisca, working the clinic. She didn't have access to the medications and the lab was closed, so we had no way of getting brook a ... read more

Well, we have a bit of misery now. We are staying at a very nice hotel (Lagoon Lodge) and there is no air conditioning. The ceiling fan works very well so it is like a Saskatchewan summer night in late July. There don’t seem to be any mosquitoes in my room so that is good. I don’t have a mosquito net and I don’t want to have to wear bug spray to bed. I’ll go down to breakfast soon and then it will be off to the credit union to begin our work. I’m going to see if I can arrange to have some laundry done. I have been hand washing my things as I go however I have a few things that I would like dried in the hot sun. I got a couple pictures ... read more

We went to the University of Education Credit Union first thing Monday morning. As we drove through the community of Winneba watching the children on their way to school and the general public making their way to various jobs, I heard on the radio, a plea for donations for the desperate people of Haiti. I know in my heart that many Ghanain people will find a way to come up with funds to help people less fortunate than themselves. Ghana is a very warm country and I cannot stress enough the friendliness of the people. As we approached the credit union building, I was truly amazed. The structure is huge with a large parking lot and the beginnings of beautiful landscaping. Currently the credit union occupies a few rooms on the second story of the structure. ... read more

I have a blog entry and several AMAZING pictures on my USB Stick. It will not fit in the computer I am at at this Internet Cafe. I will try again the next time we come to get a computer that will work. We left Elmina this morning and travelled to Winneba. We are still in the Cenral Region. The place we are staying is called Lagoon Lodge. It has ceiling fans but no AC. The temperature in my room is 90 degrees F. I hope I can sleep tonight. I will relax and drift off. Barry went swimming (sort of) in the sea today. There was a steep drop off and the under tow was dangerous. I will post pictures soon. We go to our third and last credit union tomorrow morning. It is the ... read more

Our day started in luxury (I’m sorry Barry. I know you told me that the Irish need misery but there was none at this point). We had a lovely breakfast in an open air restaurant with a morning breeze coming off the warm Atlantic Ocean. We took advantage of the time to rest, relax, catch up on a bit of reading and tour the grounds of the compound. I came across the band’s gear (from the night before) and was happy to see that they use the same (exactly) kind of equipment that our “Greenwood Band” uses when we play. Next, Barry arranged for a driver to take us to Elmina and our next hotel (the Elmina Bridge House) which is directly across the water from the Elmina Slave Castle we wished to visit in the ... read more

THE ABOAKYER FESTIVAL FESTIVAL BACKGROUND All chiefdoms propitiate their stools with sacrifices of some sort in Ghana. This in no different with the people of winneba. In the case of the Otuano royal house, custodians of the paramount stool of the Effutu state, this is done once a year. It is believed that during times of difficulty the sons and daughters of Gyarteh Gyan penyin and their successors were greatly supported by the deity Otu. Along their route to their long trajectory movement through forests and across rivers down to their present location. A sacrifice that meant not only to say thank you but also to consecrate the deity to renew its powers. At that time of the calendar, they propitiated and consecrated the deity and its sons (the lesser gods) with human sacrifices but this ... read more
