This is the market in the small village of Balibela - about 15 km from Lalibela.

Teffe - this is the grain that is used to make injera - the spongy bread that is the base for every meal in Ethiopia. It is very filling!

Lunch!

We had lunch at The Seven Olives Hotel. Gashaw did the ordering and it was served in this lovely traditional basket. Note the 'tukol' shape - it is almost as pervasive here as the donkeys!

Jerusalem Hotel

This is the main dining room. It is a traditional tukol shaped building - round with a 'hat' roof.

Tukols

These are tukols - you see them all over Ethiopia. The one in the foreground is for storage or perhaps for livestock. The main one is the house. Many of these are two stories. Sleeping quarters on the second floor - kitchen etc on the ground level.

The church in the cave fascinated me. Did anyone say why they did that....protection from enemies, or maybe from the sun, or sand...hmmm? Is a ferangi like a gringo?
