David and I went to Luxor, Egypt for a week away to the heat and sunshine. And HOT it was - and the sun never stopped shining! We managed to pack in quite a lot during the week, lazing round the pool as well as a balloon flight over the river Nile, a trip into the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens on the west bank of the Nile (see Thebes Travelblog entry) and visits to Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple and Luxor Museum. The Luxor Museum was much smaller than the museum in Cairo - but more manageable and well laid out and labelled. There were chariots and bows and arrows from Tutankamun's tomb, a couple of mummies, one still with hair, and lots of great statues and figures. We walked along ... read more

The title question regarding the number of Mohamed's in Egypt, could be asked of several names of course. It just struck me that after just a couple of weeks in Egypt I had met at least 4 or 5. I asked one of the local tour leaders' how many he knew. His response of 40 wasn't really a shock. Having to remember each Mohameds' fathers' name for further identificatiojn might be difficult for people like me though. Not a good country to be bad with names that's for sure!! And on with the travels. Having spent the last day in Cairo racing around the museum, it was nice to stop and watch the sunset. We stoppped right on a bridge and within a couple of minutes a cup of tea was offered to us all. ... read more

When you come to Egypt, there is a very standard tourist trail that you take. This goes from Cairo (the pyramids) to Luxor (Valley of the Kings, and Karnak temples), followed by Aswan (feluccas (little boats) on the nile), followed by Abu Simbel (very impressive large temples). Then there is also the Red Sea, where you can go scuba diving. And Mt Sinai. Apparently fantastic, but not as popular. One of the problems with a 4 month round the world trip is that you don't get time to do everything. So we had decided not to go to the Red Sea. Plus we figure we get great diving in Australia already. Plus we don't dive :) So we had decided to do the standard tourist track. Our Lonely Planet had warned us not to allow our ... read more

I had a clever and witty blog, all typed up on my friend's computer that I was planning on uploading, but ... something got messed up somewhere along the way with the file format and all (how I hate windows), and the file is corrupt (due to "long lines"), and so I can't upload it... I'm heading out to Sudan in a few minutes, and will be there for about a month... don't expect to receive any emails or updates from me, since it is a real 3rd world country, and I've heard reports of an hour of internet costing $15. Apologies for the anticlimactic end to Egypt... hopefully I'll have the opportunity to upload it sometime later.... read more

As we were finishing up our Arabic Language course, we had the option of adding on a Nile cruise for $130. At this price, why not? The cruise was from the southern city of Aswan to the Ancient Egyptian city of Luxor. We took an overnight train from Cairo down to Aswan. We were in first class so it was not too bad, but upon arrival, I had the feeling reminiscent of a good long trans-oceanic flight. Once we all got used to the idea of having traveled south for half a day and now being in ‘upper Egypt’, we started to savor being in a really really hot part of the country. The savoring lasted for about 5 minutes, after which we initiated an ongoing mission of finding ways to avoid the sun. I will ... read more

Karnak is a place that is hard to describe. Huge. Grand. Visually astounding. Its a massive complex (over 100 acres all up, but you only look at a part of it) which you enter down a short avenue of sphinxes with rams heads and 'holding' statues of Ramses II - remember that avenue of sphinxes from Luxor temple? This is the other end. The further you go in the "main" part, the bigger things get, more and more grand. The columns in the hypostyle hall are awesome, huge round decorated pillars, all the walls have a different story to tell, of battles fought and always won. Even our photos, and we took a lot! wont do the place justice. The main part of the complex is the Precinct of Amun (almost 62 acres!) The most impressive ... read more

The tour we were booked on this morning didnt turn up. After hassling the guy in the hostel for a bit - he wasnt bothered that we had paid already! - he spoke to someone on the phone then wandered into the street and flagged down the first passing minibus full of tourists. This he claimed was our tour, but... still, it was going where we wanted to go. We drove about 7km from Luxor until we reached a bridge over the Nile. Then of course, we had to drive all the way back again as the tombs we were going to are pretty much across from Karnak. We went to the Valley of the Queens first, a bit of a misnomer as there are not only Queens buried here but also high officials and royal ... read more

There is so much to see and do around Luxor, and we took so many photos, that we are going to try and write a separate entry for each place ie Luxor Temple, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens... So here goes, our first day in Luxor... The train ride down wasnt anything special. When we got the tickets we asked for two seats next to each other, but the tickets came back with two seat numbers no where near each other. We questioned this and we assured that they were right next to each other, several times as we did keep asking! So what happened when we got on the train, yup, we were at either end of the carriage. At least we were in the same carriage. Luckily we managed to ... read more
