Joshua and I woke up at 4:30 this morning for our balloon ride. We were all layered up and waiting as our shuttle drove up. We drove around to a few hotels to pick up more passengers and then we were dropped off at the pier about 5 minutes down a side street from our hotel. Later on in the day Joshua was not impressed that we had to get up so early and drive around only to find that we could have slept in and walked over ourselves. Anyhow, we are given a safety talk once all passengers have been picked up and then we walk down to get on to the shuttle boat. We are offered coffee and snacks as we apparently have to await the arrival of other people before our shuttle takes ... read more

We got up relatively early today to be ready for our tour of the Luxor West Bank where the tombs are including the Valley of the Kings (where King Tutankhamen lies) Our guide, Mariel, and our driver picked us up around 8 am. We could tell right away we had a good guide as Mariel gave us some background while we drove down towards the bridge that spans the Nile. There is no bridge directly across to the West Bank (though it is less than 1 km away). Instead you have to drive North along the side of the river for about 5 km to the bridge and then head back up the other side. Our first stop was the Collosi of Memnon, two huge 18 meter tall statues which are virtually all that is left ... read more

Day 13. Today we traveled to the West Bank of the Nile, the Valley of the Kings, Temple of Queen Hatshipsute, and the Colossi of Memnon. We first went to the West Bank of the Nile. Then we went to the Valley of the Kings. We got on a mini train for a minute, got off and hiked up a hill for about 7 minutes. It was very hot and crowded. There are 11 tombs to visit, but we were only going to visit 3. Mr. Wayne and I didn't feel good. One of the tombs we went to was Hatshipsute's tomb. Her tomb was the largest tomb we saw. I only saw 2 tombs because the last one was super crowded and I was too tired (still feeling ill from long train ride). The tomb ... read more

Last Day on Sonesta Nile River Cruise December 29, 2008 After breakfast on board, we had an early start, leaving our ship at 7:30am with our bags in tow. We boarded a bus, crossed the Nile and toured the West Bank with our group. In ancient Egypt, the tombs were all built on the west side because the day “died” in the west, swallowed by the goddess Nutt. People lived on the East Bank where the sun was reborn each morning. We visited the Valley of the Kings and Queens, which included the famous Colossi of Memnon, three tombs of the Thebian rulers, and toured the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, the only woman pharaoh to reign in ancient Egypt. We then toured 3 tombs in the Valley of the Queens. The tour of the Valley of ... read more

3/10/08 This morning we went to the West Bank to explore the buriel grounds in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. The remote, barren valley of the Kings was the the necropolis of the New Kingdom pharaohs. By digging their tombs deep into the Theban Hills, pharaohs had hoped that it would stop robbers stealing their priceless possessions buried with them. It was an unsuccessful strategy. Despite their hidden locations, every burial chamber was raided except for those of Yuya and Tuya and Tutankhamun. The terrain is mountainous desert. With our entry ticket we visited the tombs of Ramesses IV, Ramesses 1 and the most well known and famous tomb of Tutankhamun. The tomb of Ramesses IV was the first one we entered. It was unbelievable, not what we expected at all. It was ... read more

Twelfth & Thirteenth Stop: Valley of the Kings & Luxor: Next along the Nile river was the fabled Valley of the Kings. Before entering the valley, we stopped at the Colossi of Memnon and Hatshepsut's memorial temple. The actual Valley of the Kings is a region where 500 years worth of Pharaohs and nobility from the "New Kingdom" were buried (16th - 11th century BC). The mummies of some of the most famous Pharaohs, including King Tutankhamun and Ramses II were discovered here. After years of theft from above ground monuments (i.e. the Pyramids), the Pharaohs decided to create their lasting monuments underground. The Egyptians take the "No Photo" rule seriously. Ryan was snapping away inside the first tomb and this elderly Egyptian man asked him to show him the camera and he just took it! ... read more

The next morning Janice's condition had improved slightly, the fever was down and she was able to make it out of bed to visit the Temple of Horus at Edfu. Dave, our tour leader, had 'arranged' (read bribed) the guard to let us in first so that we could get a few minutes to ourselves and look around in relative solitude. The temple was built in the Ptolemy period, but is important because it closely imitates much older temples and it is incredibly well preserved - it is also the site of the legendary battle between the gods Horus and Seth (who murdered Horus' father, Osiris - we got to "act" out the story later that evening after a few beers). The temple has many statues of Horus as the Falcon and there are numerous reliefs ... read more

Early pick up at hotel for flight from Cairo to Luxor. The airport was a madhouse and we had an agent getting our boarding passes. Then hundreds of people pushed their way through the single security line to the waiting room. We were supposed to “listen” for our flight to be called and it was really just the guy at the door saying flight numbers. You had to be standing there to hear him. Buses to the plane then off to Luxor. Picked up and taken to the Ti-Yi. Many more tips along the way. It was still early and we did not have a cabin. We met our local guide, George, and he was not very helpful. All of a sudden he announced he was taking us to our first excursion to the Valley of ... read more

On Sunday we hired a minibus and a wonderful guide called Tony and visited the Valley of the Kings. The entry ticket entitled us to visit three tombs - they were all fascinating with wonderful paintings and illustrations on every available bit of wall space. It is astounding that some of these looked as fresh as when they were first done over 3,000 years ago. We also visited the Temple of Hapshetsut which is quite unlike any other temple in the area. Then Tony took us to Deir al-Medina where a village to house the men who worked on the tombs has been unearthed. There are wonderful tombs there too of artists and officials - they are very small (only eight people are allowed in at one time) but the decorations are exquisite and so fresh. ... read more
