On Sunday we hired a minibus and a wonderful guide called Tony and visited the Valley of the Kings. The entry ticket entitled us to visit three tombs - they were all fascinating with wonderful paintings and illustrations on every available bit of wall space. It is astounding that some of these looked as fresh as when they were first done over 3,000 years ago.

We also visited the Temple of Hapshetsut which is quite unlike any other temple in the area. Then Tony took us to Deir al-Medina where a village to house the men who worked on the tombs has been unearthed. There are wonderful tombs there too of artists and officials - they are very small (only eight people are allowed in at one time) but the decorations are exquisite and so fresh.

Tony was a wonderful guide and was very knowledgeable about the Pharoahs whose tombs we visited and the numerous gods and goddesses which many of the illustrations depict. He made it a very interesting and memorable day.
