Executive summary: Very dry, very hot, very dusty, and very windy and that is just the food - just kidding - that's the weather! There are enough check points, soldiers armed with automatic weapons, and armoured vehicles to make you think Egypt is at war or about to go to war. That, together with the dilapidated buildings, ruins, half finished new builds, and fairly trashy surrounds make this even more believable. But that's not why we came here, we came to see Egypt and all its great buildings - the pyramids of Giza were awesome, as were the many temples and tombs we've visited. The trip on a felucca up the Nile was just as special and the diving has been quite spectacular too. It's proved fairly difficult to find authentic Egyptian food as they unfortunately ... read more

Despite ‘Egyptian organisation’ the ferry from Hurghada to Sharm-el-Sheikh worked and we arrived on time after three and a half hours. Taxis were waiting and we had soon negotiated a price to our hotel 100 miles away in Nuweiba, where we had looked for peace, quiet and sunbathing for our remaining 12 days. When we arrived we realised our mistake straight away. Our hotel was on the coast but in the desert with nothing near it. No shops, cafes or life for 3 miles! There are plenty of hotels but they were nearly all closed after the terrorist attacks of 4 years ago, those still open were empty. We were not, of course, the only guests; there was an Israeli couple, who left 2 days later! Nuweiba’s problem is ‘a chicken and egg situation’ in that ... read more

May 4 We were up early again to catch the hydrofoil to Sharm El Shek which took a little over 3 hours. a little rough going but all good. We then had to drive about 1 1/2 hours to Dahab to have some lunch at this cute place on the beach. Like I said in the last post I wish we would have stayed here, much more relaxed. The restaurant had a buch of kittens that were hiding under the pillows so you had to be careful not to squish them. We now had a 2 hour drive to St. Catherines where we would get a few hours sleep before having to get up at 1:30 am and climb Mt Sinai. May 5 No one came to knock on our door to wake us up, luckly ... read more

We loved Dahab so much that we decided to head back there. From Luxor, the cheapest way to reach Dahab was by bus, and it was one of the most painful journeys we have ever done. Luckily we were not alone on the bus ride, we met a lovely couple from NZ, Kieren and Laura who were also catching the bus to Dahab. The bus itself was ok, if not a little smelly and cramped but it did have air conditioning. We left at 4.30pm and it was a hell of a trip, more than 19 hours, we did not arrive in Dahab until lunchtime the following day. It was really frustrating, the bus stopped every hour or so for over 30 minutes at a time. All night we had to listen to various recitals from ... read more
