dahab day 1 yesterday me and dad went snorcling in the red sea and t was great we saw fish of all kinds and cool coral that was every where and lots of sea enenimies that waved about i n the sea. we mainly went snorcling near the light house however joseph and amy recomended eel gardens which was also quite cool but dangerous as to get to the coral in deep water you must swim around 500metres through 1 metre high water that had posinous sea urchents and black sea slugs so we couldn't stand up much or we might get posened. when we went snorcling the sun cream got washed off so the sun burnt our backs. dahab day 2 today was my favourite yet, we stayed in bed until 12 oclock and then ... read more

I am finally leaving Cairo for good. After using Cairo as my base for numerous excursions withing Egypt , I am setting sail and moving on. I stayed in Cairo for one night after returning from Khartoum and the next evening I caught the eleven oclock night bus to Dahab. This was a very interesting Bus trip because first of all it arrived about an hour and a half late. That is ok I didn't expect it to arrive on time. I was very tired by the time the bus arrived and was ready to crash on the bus and wake up in the morning fully refreshed.....this did not happen. This bus had more stops and checks than any other bus I had taken thus far in my trip. At one point everyone had to get ... read more

Staying at Bishbishi in Dahab. This is my favourite place so far - very relaxed and love being by the sea. Can highly recommend Bishbishi - friendly staff, great food, good rooms from between 1.50 - 6 pounds per night. From here you can do quad biking, horse riding, diving, snorkelling. Went to Blue Hole to snorkel yesterday - was amazing, like Finding Nemo :) Beautiful coral and fish and, according to the Aussies, diving and snorkelling is better than the Great Barrier Reef. You can also travel to Petra, Jerusalem, and Mount Sinai from here. Walked up Mount Sinai a couple of nights ago. Hard going if you're as unfit and unused to hiking as me, but made it to the top (over 2000 metres high). There are lots of coffee shops on the way ... read more

Hey all, it feels like ages since I've had the time to sit down and catch up!! Our last day in Luxor, myself and Emma had to get up at half 4 to go hot air ballooning, we were very bleary eyed but it was worth it- we caught sunrise over the Valley of the Kings as we rose up. We didn't have a lot to do apart from look around but our "chief pilot" was very good and even came out with an "Cad is ainm duit?" when he learned I was Irish! Came back to the hotel for breakfast at half 7 before getting a horse and carriage ride through Luxor to Karnak temple. This is one of the most famous ancient Egyptian ruins where pharohs of all ages have left their marks- but ... read more

"10 pounds!?!?" exclaimed Sags. 1.5 litres of water cost about three pounds everywhere else in Egypt, you see. But here at the roadside shop in the middle of nowhere, it was ten pounds. I mean, where else are you going to go? It was obvious that there is an arrangement between Travel Talk and this shop for the coach to stop here, as our tour guide Yasser (or Yes Sir as he prefers to be known) shows us a model in the store of the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal was strategically important - and perhaps still is - as it provided a shipping route between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea - and passage to the Indian Ocean. It was so important in fact, that the British made sure they kept control of it ... read more

My plan for getting to Dahab was to take a bus to Hurghada, get a short 90 minute ferry to Sharm el Sheikh, and then a quick bus ride to Dahab, I figured I would be there in a day. Unfortunately after a long bus ride to Hurghada, a miserable night of sleep on an extremely uncomfortable cheap bed, an early morning so I could get to the ferry with plenty of time, “we no why ferry no work” in the words of the boat captain. Distraught, I got another bus ticket to Cairo, followed by another bus to Sharm el Sheikh. The “food” the bus company was supposed to provide turned to be an extremely sugary juice box and a twinkie. Needless to say twenty hours later I arrived in Sharm a starving exhausted broken ... read more

So this is the plan for India. For starters, I chose India for several reasons. I think it is going to be the Asian superpower of the 21st century. Over the next thirty years India is going to add up to 300 million workers to the international workforce, that combined with dropping birth rates should mean what economists refer to as a “population dividend,” a situation where there is a huge influx of workers who have a decreased amount of dependents which leads to increased standards of living and disposable income (think baby-boomers in the US). Compare this to China which has the 4-2-1 effect of 4 grandparents, 2 parents, 1 child. By 2050 China will have as many pensioners as workers---in other words China has already peaked, and they are still poor. India is on ... read more

I'm in the 'backpackers paradise' town of Dahab, a little ways north of Sharm el Sheikh on the east coast of the Sinai. It's a very cute town with a seaside stroll about a kilometre long which has endless restaurants/bars/sheesha joints hanging on the oceanside and hotels/dive shops/tourist shops on the land side. It's sooo layed back, the sun is endless and the sinai mountains create a pretty funky backdrop. There are sooooo many dive outfits here it's rediculous, I just went with the one in the hostel i'm staying in which by the way is $4 a night to stay at. The cook at the restaurant there always has a cool dinner going, think tonight is shark steaks, and charges unbeatable prices for the budget minded travellers staying at the hostel. I did a warm ... read more

Never trust a guidebook. The lesson of the day. After spending the night on Mount Sinai, I had been planning on getting either the 1pm bus, or one of the 'frequent' minbuses that my guidebook said run from St Catherine to Suez, where I could then catch the overnight bus to Luxor, saving me spending a night in some deadbeat town or at worst the bus station, and giving me time in Luxor and Aswan before the ferry to Sudan. But once I was back from the summit, I was told there was only a 6am bus to Suez. And nothing else. No 1pm bus. No minibuses. Nothing. My only option was apparently to hire a car for 120EP, more than my previous 5 nights accomodation. It may have only been 12GBP, but still. It's all ... read more

For more of my photos, or to buy my book, please visit www.nickkembel.com I am quite frequently asked to cite my favorite country, a terribly ambiguous question roughly akin to asking somebody to choose his or her favorite person in the world. Other people want me to tell them a travel story, but I am seldom able to deliver adequately on the spot. But with the space allotted here, I have enumerated 21 of my most emotional worldly experiences. Most of them border on the sublime, surreal, or even religious, and combined they form the pivotal or core moments that have defined my pilgrimage through the world to date. Some brought tears to my eyes; others forever and irreversibly altered my sense of self and resulting perception of the world around me. This is a ... read more
