Background: Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: an embattled president, a divided military, drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.

Arrived in Caracas yesterday afternoon and was almost instantanously overjoyed by the ensuing heat. My plane journey was anything but uneventful! Firstly when I arrived at the airport I checked in and the lady behind the desk said something about tax, I thought oh great more expense, but I went into a side office and they gave me 60,000 pesos (just under 20 pounds), confused but a good start. Most of the plane was filled up with the crew of Pop Idol Latin America, I was sat next to two of the camera men, one was a hottie!! They were all [View Full Entry]

From the great city of Quito we flew on March 20th through Bogota, without getting abducted by anyone interesting, and landed in Caracas, the crime capital of the world according to some. Managed to get through the airport with our shirts and over to the local airport for a short flight to Isla de Margarita. We´ve had a very laid back time here. Not alot to do and one has to just take your foot off the accelerator and chill or you can go a bit nuts. Very hot here. I mean very hot. Our friend Richard very graciously provided us [View Full Entry]

Roughing it

South America » Venezuela » Insular » Los Roques
The next 5 days followed a similar theme so I'll give a run down of a typical day on Los Rocques. Wake up at about 8am for breakfast. This consisted of melon, venezuelan bread thingies with cheese and ham (yes and, not or), eggs, pancakes and some cakey type fellas. Topped up with juice and coffee it was time for the first of 18 applications of suncream. Pack your bag and chill out in the Posada before chatting to Enrique as to where to spend the day. The choice was generally a variety of deserted beaches - with a snorkelling option [View Full Entry]

Mr Cool rocked up fashionably late and helps us check in to our flight over to Los Rocques. The wife was extremely excited at the prospect of spending an extended period on the island archipelago - despite being in the airport i was already applying the suncream. The plane was small and noisey but the view out of the window was impressive. A distinct line where the reef begins signals the gateway to the islands and the onset of the bright turquoise water. The airstrip is relatively short and not for the nervous. The airport facilities at Los Rocques limited to [View Full Entry]

Its a big spot

South America » Venezuela » Capital » Caracas
2 days of travelling to get to Los Rocques in Venzuela started with a morning on the beach before saying goodbye to Pucon, most agreeable. A trip in the taxi with The Bunk to the airport before flying to Santiago. Santiago appears surrounded by hills and looked impressive as the sun set in the distance. Our airport hotel did the job and the pain of the previous day's bike ride was slowly diminishing. 29/2 Back on the plane for the trip to Caracas. Finally managed to buy decent postcards at the airport but getting stamps is like searching for the holy [View Full Entry]

Echar p'alante...

South America » Venezuela » Andean » Carorita
In my life, choosing between responsibility and what I feel like doing has manifested itself in decisions like the following: I want to go to the movies, but I can’t because I have to study. I want to buy that new shirt, but I can’t because I need money for gas. I want to go on the spring break trip, but I can’t because I need to help out at home. For rural Venezuelan farmers, choosing between responsibility and what they feel like doing results in decisions like the following: I want to finish high school, but I can’t because [View Full Entry]
