Background: Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: an embattled president, a divided military, drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.

Well I have to say Venezuela definatly did improve after Caracas. We stayed in Caracas for one night then fled northward to the Carriabean cost, we travelled by bus then by dodgy old american car to a small beach resort called Santa Fe. It was absolutely beautiful and somewhere that you might see on the front of a post card. Our hotel was right on the beach and we chilled out and drank some beers and rum. Caracas- City of Deceit

Arrived in Caracas yesterday afternoon and was almost instantanously overjoyed by the ensuing heat. My plane journey was anything but uneventful! Firstly when I arrived at the airport I checked in and the lady behind the desk said something about tax, I thought oh great more expense, but I went into a side office and they gave me 60,000 pesos (just under 20 pounds), confused but a good start. From the great city of Quito we flew on March 20th through Bogota, without getting abducted by anyone interesting, and landed in Caracas, the crime capital of the world according to some. The next 5 days followed a similar theme so I'll give a run down of a typical day on Los Rocques. Wake up at about 8am for breakfast. This consisted of melon, venezuelan bread thingies with cheese and ham (yes and, not or), eggs, pancakes and some cakey type fellas. Mr Cool rocked up fashionably late and helps us check in to our flight over to Los Rocques. The wife was extremely excited at the prospect of spending an extended period on the island archipelago - despite being in the airport i was already applying the suncream. The plane was small and noisey but the view out of the window was impressive. A distinct line where the reef begins signals the gateway to the islands and the onset of the bright turquoise water.
