Venezuela Travel Blogs

Background: Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: an embattled president, a divided military, drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.

Well, I made it back from Choroni! I literally rolled right into class and off the night bus yesterday morning having slept four hours and not eaten in oh maybe 18 hours. Where to even begin with the weekend story… Last Thursday night about 11 other students and I hopped on board a bus around 8pm for the long 12 hour drive to Maracay. Luckily the buses were actually nice, kind of like a coach bus with reclining seats, although they literally keep it 40F with the AC blasting. It was a little hilarious to see all the Venezuelans bundled in [View Full Entry]

My first host family at work
Here I am in Caracas- finding it horrendously expensive even though I´m not paying for accommodation. Should be leaving fairly soon. I´ve been having a great time and have been accompanied most of the time by various hospitality club and couchsurfing members, so that´s been great fun. I´ve tasted the national beer, Polar, and I can safely say it´s far nicer than Brazilian beer, ha ha... I´ve already been hauled in by the police and had to wipe lots of photos from my camera because I was apparently in a restricted zone. On Monday night David met me at the airport [View Full Entry]

Leaving for Choroni beach tonight! I am so glad to be done with class for week. 10 other students and I are taking a bus overnight to the northern tip of Venezuela by Maracay, past Maricaibo lake (the one where Geremi Gonzalez the american baseball player got struck by lightening, did you hear about that? I guess it was all over news there) I will be going there next weekend! I guess we will be staying on little cabins on the water where there is a lightening storm all night, I am psyched for that! Anyways, I will be back monday [View Full Entry]

Welcome Home
Welcome Home
The view from my house. Amazing.
So I set up this blog, thinking that I would use it to post my pictures so everyone at home could see them. I figured it would be a good way to stay connected to everyone at home, and have them enjoy the same things I’m enjoying. I figured I would write every day, or at least every other. But today is the first day I’ve actually had time to sit down and write! But that’s a good sign- it means I’m busy! I’ll start at the beginning, but I know that know matter how hard I try, no one else [View Full Entry]

After a few nights sleeping at my host family’s kara (my roomate) and I ran into a few problems…the spring in my bed, right in the middle completely broke so now I sleep with a little slide down to the middle of my bed J Did I mention the bugs are huge here? When kara and I were sleeping we heard a flapping thing over our heads that sounded like a bat (we don’t really have closed windows so we sleep with big spray on) and I definitely started to freak out a little. Turn out, it was a giant black [View Full Entry]

He llegado a Merida! After 24 hours of traveling, with planes delayed in Caracas and problems with rain (because the planes cant fly in the rain without radar) we finally made it to a neighboring town and taxied into Merida. That night, I met my host family for the first time, Madre Evelina, my older sister Chile and Lusiana who is a 7 years old that never stops singing. My family is great…the only problem is they speak Spanish. Who would have thought! The first few days were a little rough communicating, and we definitely used a lot of gestures but [View Full Entry]

Ana [View Full Entry]

Well I have to say Venezuela definatly did improve after Caracas. We stayed in Caracas for one night then fled northward to the Carriabean cost, we travelled by bus then by dodgy old american car to a small beach resort called Santa Fe. It was absolutely beautiful and somewhere that you might see on the front of a post card. Our hotel was right on the beach and we chilled out and drank some beers and rum. As you can imagine rum lead to some more rum and then a headache... The next day we went on a small speed boat [View Full Entry]

Atardecer en Juan Griego
Isla Margarita ... totalmente inexplicable... !
