Background: Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: an embattled president, a divided military, drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.

It started on thursday night with a phone call from a friend. "Hey, we're going to Margarita for the weekend and have a spare seat in the car - do you want to come?" As my previosly arranged plans for the weekend had just fallen through (as Venezuelan plans so often do) I felt this was too good an opportunity to turn down. I knew that managing the five hour drive and six hour ferry ride there and then back again would be a bit of a squeeze for just a weekend but ever since I arrived I've been wanting to [View Full Entry]

The ancient Margarita ferry

well, how inevitable was this. i had a good week, a really good week, in caracas. then i headed to maracay, and ever since i got there, its been a different ball game completely. its not anything to do with the place itself, or even the people im around. it has just quite literally hit the fan, and the cheery juanito billetes that milled around the venezuelan capital with a 74 year old has been replaced by a more dramatic version of liverpool john. yes, thats right, either being happy or being sad. only this time its dramatically different. im either [View Full Entry]

Our trip to the tallest waterfalls in the world (at least that is what the Venuzuelians claim!) was brilliant! Angel Falls is in the middle of the Jungle and it is quite a mission to get there... First you fly in a 6 seater plane which is a little bit scary, especially as our pilot insisted on pointing out different interesting trees, rivers and giant rocks along the way... this involved him taking his hands off the controls turning round pointing and shouting in spanish until the plane started to drop to one side then he would grab the controls and [View Full Entry]

the best thing i saw today, without doubt was a poster of big man chavez. it was him, with a massive grin on his face, holding a baseball bat as if he was about to swing it. glorious. today was also the 2nd time i had walked into a chavez rally of sorts. venezuela has elections coming up, and in plaza bolivar today there was a live band and whatnot, with pretty much everyone wearing red tshirts. hilariously enough, today i wore a red tshirt as well. today was certainly the right day to wear red in caracas. so yes, this [View Full Entry]

Family reunion in Georgia
Family reunion in Georgia
From left is my mom, my son, my sister, and then me with my new ultra short haircut.
We left Grenada August 19 and sailed to Trinidad with our friends Val & Lloyd on s/v Puddle Jumper. On August 22nd I flew from Trinidad to Atlanta, GA to visit my family in Dalton, GA. My son and daughter-in-law flew in from Dallas, and my sister flew in from Houston. We all gathered at Mom's house. I spent 9 days in Georgia . My Mom's family has a big family reunion every year, so I had a chance to see aunts, uncles, cousins, 2nd cousins, 3rd cousins, etc. I flew back to Trinidad around the 1st of September. Jimmy stayed [View Full Entry]

Fishing boats in Margarita
La Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Valle

this entry was originally going to be one line long, because it sounds so bizarre, but then i suppose i´m doing too much to justify that. either way, i´ll start with the aforementioned line, and then get into the details. last night i went out for drinks with my host, a pole dancer and the most german guys ever, and watched venezuela´s version of ozzy osbourne cover iron maiden, led zeppelin, metallica and the stones. and by gum it was hilarious. but we´ll go back to where it was left last i guess, which was friday night. we went out to [View Full Entry]

Boat trip down the Amazon!!! plus Angel Falls Last Thursday afternoon, all hot and sweaty, I jumped into a natural pool deep in the Venezuelan jungle and took a swim. The air was full of mist and a deep rumble echoed off the rocks around. From three hundred stories above a thick ribbon of water poured off a rock wall and pounded into the stones below. These were Angel Falls, the absolute highest in the world, and it was a long trip to get there. First was the trip down the Amazon in a cargo boat, then the busses north across [View Full Entry]

We sailed from Trinidad to Los Tostigos, Venezuela. The Los Tostigos Islands lie about 40 miles north of the Venezuelan mainland and have about 160 inhabitants who live by fishing. Since there is no ferry and no airport yachtspeople are among the very few outsiders to visit. [View Full Entry]
