This morning we arrived in Isla Margarita, a small island which belongs to Venezuela. Together with its neighbouring island, Isla Margarita (means pearl) forms the state of Nueva Esparta or New Sparta.

We took a small trip all around the island and drove along the beaches but also into the cities and through the wilderness in the center of the island. We visited a museum which showed us the history of the island itself, we went to a beautiful church which is a pilgrimage place and saw the oldest church on the Isla. We went up to La Galera, a spanish colonial fort and from there we could see all of La Ascuncion, the capital of the island. Later we visited the Santa Rosa Fortress where Luisa Caceres de Arismendi, a heroine of the Venezuelan War of Independence, was held and captured in a dark dungeon. We saw quite a lot of the island, a great trip. In the evening we went back to the ship and left the island.
