Our last and final day in France. Tomorrow we will be on our way back to good old Germany. We started our day early and went out so visit one of the most famous castles of the Loire: The Chateau de Chambord. Luckily we were quite early, so there were not many tourists there yet and we had some more time and space to walk around. The castle was originally build in the 16th century and was later renovated. It belonged to the French kings and was used as a hunting lodge. We had a quick walk through the rooms and from the roof we were able to see the large and wide gardens. The castle was surrounded by forest and grassland and on one of them there was an international hunting exhibition on at that ... read more

We finally arrived in Paris and our programm for the city was very long. On our first day there we went straight to the Institut de France, because we had an early appointment to visit the library. Our guide, who was working in the institute, was able to tell and show us the most interesting facts about the building itself. The library was very impressive, in such an environment I would love to study. But our visit was over and we walked the short distance over to the louvre. We did not go inside because the line was rather long and we didn't have the time for it, but the topic of our excursion was the early modern french history (plus the 19th century french history) so we concentrated on the events of the St. Bartholomew's ... read more

We arrived in Reims in the early afternoon and went right away to the most important sight in the city: the Cathedral of Reims. Completed in the 15th century it used to be the crowingchurch of the french kings. Since 1991 it is UNESCO world heritage. We visited the inside and rounded the church to see the impressive outside as well. Sadly we didn't have enough time to see more of the city itself, because we still had quite a distance to take to go to Paris and didn't want to get stuck in the rushhour.... read more

The next day we started early again. We drove all the way to Verdun, to be more exact: To the battlefields of Verdun. We first visited the small museum, where we learned all about the war, well at least what we didn't know yet. After watching a small movie - which was very one-sided and not well made at all - in the museum cinema, we left the building and went to the real battlefield. We went underground to see a fort, where the soldiers stayed and where the longest and most devastating gas attack happened. The cold down there was very refreshing and you can get lost in the long and confusing alleys. It was a very wierd feeling to be down there, where there are only bats, and sometimes some visitors. After we came ... read more

We started our excursion to France very early and after driving through western Germany and Luxembourg, we crossed the French border. Our first stop was the city of Metz, in the Lorraine region. We had almost the whole day to discover this rather small, but very beautiful city. The first sight we visited was the Cathedral of Metz (Saint Etienne de Metz) from the 16th century. The inside is very impressive, but reminded us a lot of the Dom or Cathedral in Cologne as well. We continued from there and walked through the mayor part of the city, passing stores and houses. Finally we reached our destination: the main railway station (Gare de Metz-Ville). We went inside and passed the main hallway and visited the tracks as well. The station was build by the Germans and ... read more

Our two-week cruise came to an end, if you ask me, way too early. Our last stop was the small island of Dominica. We decided to not do a tour today but just took the shuttle to the inner city of the capital, Roseau. We had enough time to walk around the city, did some last souvenirshopping and reached the harbour of the city, where a huge american cruiseship had arrived. This day was very hot and the small city started to be flooded with the tourists, so we decided to head back to the ship. The ship left a bit early and we said good-bye to our last stop. The next day was another passageday and on Saturday we arrived at the harbour of La Romana, Dominican Rep. again. In the afternoon we started our ... read more

This coming day was all about nature. We started out from the harbour of St. George's, the capital and went into the mountains to see some fantastic wildlife. Grenada is a very green and beautiful island and the flowers are impressive (see photos). At a farm we learned about cacoa and how they are harvested. We drove all the way to Gouyave, the second biggest city of the island to visit a nutmeg factory. We saw how they are dried, cracked open, sorted etc. Quite interesting to see, even though non of us really liked nutmeg. Because of this we passed quickly through the store inside the factory where many tourists bought fresh nutmeg but also nutmeg oil etc. Even though it was nice, I wish happy to be out of there because the freshly cracked ... read more

This morning we arrived in Isla Margarita, a small island which belongs to Venezuela. Together with its neighbouring island, Isla Margarita (means pearl) forms the state of Nueva Esparta or New Sparta. We took a small trip all around the island and drove along the beaches but also into the cities and through the wilderness in the center of the island. We visited a museum which showed us the history of the island itself, we went to a beautiful church which is a pilgrimage place and saw the oldest church on the Isla. We went up to La Galera, a spanish colonial fort and from there we could see all of La Ascuncion, the capital of the island. Later we visited the Santa Rosa Fortress where Luisa Caceres de Arismendi, a heroine of the Venezuelan War ... read more

Bon Bini! Welcome to Bonaire. Today we stopped at the beautiful island of Bonaire. Other than Aruba for example, Bonaire does not have too many tourists (yet?!), but the nature is very impressive. There are way more Dutch than Americans here and we really got the impression that we are in a way more "natural" place, which kept its own charme. From the capital Kralendijk we started all around the island. We saw wild flamingos and goats, passed the huge saltfields and the beautiful coral beaches. Our first stop was at the old slavehuts and we were able to look and also crawl inside, and I really mean crawl. They were very tiny and you could get a real feeling how the slaves had to live back then. After a small stop on a lovely beach, ... read more

Today we were up very early again and after a good breakfast we were ready to go. The ship would reach our next destination soon, so we had some time to prepare. Colombia was, at least for us, the highlight of the journey. We were planning to see the whole innercity and lot of culture. Soon afterwards we were able to see the skyline of Cartagena in the distance. What a view: The deep blue water and the shining white buildings of the city. The weather was very good this day and we were eager to discover the city. The first stop on our tour was the Casa Roman, the house of one of the richest and most influential families of Cartagena. It was very beautiful. Built in a moorish-arabic style, it was very cool inside. ... read more
