THE SACRED VALLEY AND MACHU PICCHU The Sacred Valley as a whole is beautiful. Surrounded only by mountains, it is so peaceful and quiet. Each day was better than the next! The weather was awesome, and it was pretty cool to be higher than the clouds everyday. PISAC Our first adventure was to go to Pisac and explore the ruins there. AMAZING!! These ruins are second only to Machu Picchu. What a great warm up for the main event. Look at the pics and you decide, we went just before sunset so the views were even that much more beautiful. The three of us took a collectivo bus from Cusco to Pisac which costs 2 soles each. Upon arrival we had a great lunch and walked around the market (which runs every Tues, Thurs, and Sun). ... read more

No, not some sordid Iberian sexual peccadillo involving a donkey and a large chorizo that one might see advertised in a phonebox (French lessons?, A & O levels?), but rather stringent pedagogy in a language school in Cusco. My memories of school are mixed. The camaraderie of misehaviour always appealed, but the scars of wedgies gone wrong are slow to heal, and I didn't relish the rigour of excercising my mind any more than was sufficient to remain conscious. Still, the prospect of continuing to flounder for the remainder of my South American journey rankled enough to force me back to study. Day 1 and after inspecting my lodgings and cleaning the contents of the previous occupant's nose from the wall next to my bed, I embarked on a(nother) tour of the city with some ten ... read more

So when I woke up this morning after a good nights rest I went into town to get a map of Arequipa. After I found one decided to get out of town as I wanted some nature. Took a cab to Molina de Sabandia, just outside Arequipa and wandered around in the surroundings and visited to Molina, which was built in the 17th century and totally restored into working order in 1973. Here I saw my first apalca who went bezerk in the mud, such cute looking animals! Apparently they taste quite good as well! There was also a lama who was a bit more shy and didn´t want his picture taken. Also some funny wurms were crawling in the gardens. Later on I went to have some dinner in the area were I am living, ... read more

After another delayed flight from Lima I arrived in Arequipa, Saskia the owner of the Spanish girl was waiting for me and together we took a taxi to my new appartment, where I will be staying the next month. Quite a nice appertment, the two other unfortenately Dutch girls were not to arrive till saturday, So I was king for one day. But no water in the kitchen, no cooker and no fridge! So no nice cooking, no cold beers and no coca thea:( The cooker and water are supposed to be installed tomorrow, but I don´t believe it actually. So Saskia explained to me how to get into town with the bus, you have to say baja and then they stop. So got myself readdy hopped on a collectivo and went for the 20 minute ... read more

Where to even begin?! First off, thanks to all for the birthday wishes!! I got all your emails and ecards and the like and really appreciated every thought and well-wish, etc. I had a fabulous birthday, but I´ll get to that in a minute as, in order to be consistent, I need to try and at least pick up where my last blog left off. So, when we last met, I had just gotten back from Machu Picchu (still not over that one!) and was back in Cuzco on the night of 26 March. Monday the 27th began pretty much like any other day with nothing specific on the agenda. I was up much earlier than Nancy, as per usual, and after a shower decided to go for a walk and find some breakfast. I figured ... read more

So onwards to Lima. Flight was delayed by 1 hour. So got myself a big bottle of water and a sandwhich. As the flight was at 12, I was quite amazed nobody was at the gate yet, I guessed something was wrong, two other peruvians were standing confused as well. But they said as it was another ora, it would be ok, yeah right I thought. So found the right gate, told the peruvians as well, but they didn´t believe me. Saw them at 12 rushing in, while were still waiting. So after boarding, some terrible food and a few hours sleep, they called if there was a doctor on board, so the girl behind me rushed over to the other isle, where a guy had passed out, he needed treatment straightway, luckely he survived and ... read more

hello friends and family! sorry for the lag in blog updates. the past 3 weeks have been a string of travel and trips, and i have been admittedly bad at checking in and carving out Internet time. however, i am ready to amend the lapse, so get ready for some updates! after a few days in la paz and the huyani potosi adventure, i set out for Copacabana (the Bolivian version), a small town on the southern shores of lake Titicaca. Copacabana, while somewhat geared to the traversing tourist, is also a nice place to kick back and relax for a few days. there are several day hikes and the requisite string of gringo restaurants and artisan shops, but more importantly....its the launching point for the isla del sol. ever since starting my planning for South ... read more

Well our month here in Cusco is almost over. We have loved everyday here!!! The people are so friendly and the city is great. We have enjoyed our family, the school, and the sites in and around the Sacred Valley! We are heading out on Saturday. Tonight we will be having one last Thursday night out for dinner and dancing with the other students from our school. Last week we had a great time and managed to stay out until 2:30 in the morning dancing and we were the first ones to leave! We have been very fortunate and have met some wonderful people at our school. From Japan to Holland to Australia to Wenatchee (2 hours away from Seattle for those of you outside the NW) everyone has been great! Melia and I have greatly ... read more
