dirty and lame. would have liked to clear out sooner had my pack accompanied me on the flight from Miami. standing at the baggage belt mesmerised by the same few recognisable pieces trundling round again and again i then stood in ´line´with a bunch of pushy peruvians (also without their baggage) trying to get my details down for one and half hours at 6am in the morning. thank god the guy from the hostel was still there waiting. not before kimi, this sweetheart receptionist from the hostel very generously helped me get my phone unlocked for use here in south america, with atrip to a dodgy black market in lima and some hard negotiating in spanish. two days later my pack arrives and i´m outta there. ... read more

Well after leaving Lima, on a 3hr bus ride to Pisco which cost NZ$10 (try going to whangarei for that price!!!) we were dropped off on the side of the road at a "stop". This consisted of people trying to get you to buy sweets and water, and taxi drivers trying to get you into their car. After working out that there was nothing else around for a few miles, we enquired as to where Pisco was....the locals simply pointed down the only other road around...Dubiously we got into a taxi as we didnt fancy walking the 6km in the mid day sun. We had sorted out a hostel to stay at and after arriving and seeing that it had a pool we relaxed a little as the town is basically a shanty town. We asked ... read more

We have arrived in Lima, Peru finally after about 21 hours of flights and transits....I personally got about 5 hours of sleep and Josh managed to sleep most of all of the flights. We are fine and well in Peru after our long and tiring flights, and of course the taxi which nearly killed us...well i dont know how many times it was in the 40min trip to our hostel, but several times over we were close enough to lick the other cars (i can see why many didnt have wing mirros anymore). It was Vietnam all over again but more organised as traffic on our side of the road was all going in one direction. But people here dont seem to know what the 2 second rule is or what indicators are for!! but they ... read more

It is a new year, a year that has already seen big changes for me. I started the new year in Costa Rica, my first passport stamp. I also started the new year without Stacy, without my puppy Calvin, and with the idea of selling my house. Now I am on a plane to Peru! I am realizing my dreams. And the opportunities that present themselves reinforce my decision and are more clearly defining my life path and purpose. Although I know not what that path is, I feel I am on it. I know not where this path will take me, but at the moment it seems unimportant. I am enjoying myself, I am learning, and I am growing. I have been given some incredible opportunities lately. I feel like I deterred from my ... read more

April 3, 2006 I’ll start a blog, though I may have to finish it later, as there is a chance one or two of my students from the evening class may show up. As many of you know, my evening class was a bit of a bust, though the morning class is still going great guns. We had an international lunch at the school on Saturday, and it was great fun. We set up tables in the classroom and had lunch from 2-4 PM or later. I fixed “bocadillos Americanos” American sandwiches. Apparently they don’t eat sandwiches here, so it was a novelty. Imagine tuna fish and egg salad sandwiches being a novelty!! One girl brought a huge lemon meringue pie, which was also a big hit. On Sunday, I spent the day volunteering to ... read more

Wow what a week. Exactly a week ago I left for Colca Canyon for what is considered one of the hardest, but most rewarding, hikes in South America. Here is the breakdown of one of the most amazing, exhausting, and trying experiences of my life. Day 1 Ohad, my Israelli hiking partner, and I woke at 2:45 to catch a 3:30 bus to Cabanaconde, the starting point for our hike. Although we were both very nervous about this hike (we had both read that it is extremely hard), I was especially nervous because I was starting the whole thing with a bad case of diarrhrea, which is especially worrisome because of the scarsity of water in the area. So, arriving at 10:30 am, I was already sweating from nerves even before being slapped by the extremely ... read more

Hi there to one and all, well forget the Manu Chao experience,,, a nightmare of a concert best forgot... nothing like the shanty music we westerners usually hear from them. It was 3 hrs of hard punk head bashing stuff and Kate and I were pushed from behind the whole time as we were up on the barrier. She fainted and had to be carried off while I couldnt move in case we lost the 3rd freind we were with. There wre approx 3000 Bolivians in the space of a volleyball court. Anyhow, for $12 NZ it was a night to remember if not for the right reasons. Have been told since that Manu always play this sort of music at their concerts. La Paz was an interesting city. The capital of Bolivia, and second highest city ... read more

Well after being in Lima for a couple of days, we have come to the conclusion that it is just another big dirty city. We had a little trouble finding our hostel as there werent any signs outside or anything, but none the less we did find it, and it was rather comfortable. We spent our first day walking down the main road towards the beach in Miraflores. The middle of the road was lined with trees, so it was a pleasant enough walk of about an hour. The beach itself was ,bot a becah by our standards, instead of sand there was rocks and there was soo much fog about by the time we reahed there that you couldnt see the city up on the cliffs, about 1km away. We didnt really know where ... read more
