in 1911, an American explorer and Yale university professor named Hiram Bingham, stumbled upon a mass of carefully laid granite stones, covered with overgrown jungle, and nestled in the high mountain ranges of south western Peru. this sprawling array of intricately laid stone structures, was soon to be revealed as Machu Pichhu, or the "lost city" of the fabled and revered Inca empire. "lost" is a relative term, applying mostly to the non-native world, however hiram's "discovery" became the catalyst to a renewed infatuation and awareness of the advanced and remarkable history of one of the world's first civilizations, the Inca empire. Machu Pichhu can now be reached in a variety of ways created by modern tourism, including trains and buses, however we choose to follow a more spiritual journey and hike the 4 day path ... read more

Hola again, I have been getting a lot of feedback from my last blog entry from the Colca Canyon, lots of which expressed dismay at how dangerous the trip was. For those of you who feel this way, uh, please stop reading now. So, three or four days ago I took the advice of a travel buddy and rented, for the day, a dirtbike to drive around the ruin riddled sacred valley just outside of Cuzco. Taking with me two backpackers from my hostel (one who is now a quasi girlfriend and the other a friend I will surely meet up with in Canada again) I got to the rental place early in the morning on a typically gray Cuzco day. I had decided earlier to take out a 400 cc bike, but once seeing the ... read more

Well.... it´s pretty damn amazing out here! Seemed to take forever to get here, had a small delay in Madrid but still got to Santiago in good time. Was really funny bumping into the lads in Santiago, they flew from New Zealand so our body clocks were all over the place. We decided to try and drink off the jet lag, started drinking at 2ish and after many bars ended up playing poker with some locals ´til 4am, was very messy, I still have scars from a few drunken falls now!! Stayed a few days in Santiago, went to the Chilean National Stadium to watch Universidad de Chile who are like the Manchester Utd of Chilean football, Marcelo Salas plays for them if anyone remembers him! The stadium wasn´t packed but the atmosphere was still absolutley ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima April 8th 2006

Greetings everyone! We are lovely Peru - we began our travels Monday from Fresno spending the morning getting some last minute items for the trip then heading to grandma and dad's home for breakfast before my Tia Paz along with my Grandmama took us to the train station as we needed to get to Los Angeles. We said goodbye for now to all the family which was really difficult for me - realizing that I need to go home more often than every 18 months! Anyhow, once at Union Station we caught the three dollar shuttle to LAX from there we caught a cab over to Brian Ball's place. Have you ever got a taxi and the first thing the guy says to you is TAKE A BUS basically he didn't want our fare because we ... read more

Lima wasnt that exciting, just another big dirty city. Felt pretty safe there and had no troubles. We walked for about 1 and a half hours to Miraflores to see the beach and the pretty part of town. The beach was at the bottom of some serious cliffs, and was rather spectacular, although it was made entirely of stones. We didnt swim as apparently it is fairly polluted, but this didnt stop the locals, and one English man nearly joined them after venturing too close to the waves. We meet a couple of Germans at our hostel as well as a Canadian girl, with whom we had a rather enjoyable night of playing Scum (card game) and drinking (well liz and I were drinking). The hostel was fine we had our own room and bathroom, there ... read more

Hola!! South America is awesome! After a rather strange flight from Auckland to Santiago, (strange as in left at 5pm got in at 11am the same day after a 11 hour flight....!) met up with Swills and Bean in our hostel. Got financially raped by a taxi man from the airport as usual, keep telling ourselves to learn a lesson! Hostel was cool, not much going on in Santiago though. Got hammered a few times, one highlight was watching a footy match between Universidad de Chile and someone else. The crowd was absolutely mental, naked blokes mooning police who are hitting fences with bats keeping people back etc... quite different to an English crowd in that where as we abuse the ref and get excited when our team attacks, here they just sing and jump up ... read more

We moved onto Nazca after a couple of days in the sun. Thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the famous Nazca Lines. We arrived and found a hostel our usual way of closing our eyes and point to somewhere on the page in the lonely planet guide :) if we didnt like it,we would just walk until we found something we liked. The town itself is rather cool, we managed to find luinch one day for about $0.20 and we couldnt even finish it!!! there was waay too much food. And Keeping in line with the strict Health and Safety rules here in Peru we passed numerous shops with skin chickens sitting on tables out in the sun and nicely covered with flies, maybe thats a reason we didnt eat ... read more

06 Abril - Lima, Ata Vitarte I was able to make a friend on the airplane, and she ended up walking me through customs, taking me in a taxi, and giving me a sofa to sleep on. My plane got in around 11:30 at night. So there I was, in a foreign country for the first time, with little of the native language to help me. My friend, Delia, tells me she is afraid for me, that there are taxi drivers here that will take you around the corner and mug you and that all of them will rip you off seeing that you are a gringo and presumably rich and gullible. She was right, they were even trying to scam her. Delia lives in Phoenix with her 10-month-old son and her husband lives here in ... read more

So started on monday with the classes my teacher Renzo is sound. Learning to count was no problem as I was doing the bingo on sunday. Every day it is two hours of theory and then into the city with the teachers to learn you stuff in real life. Friday we do a reality tour and will go to the slumps and orphanages. Today (wednesday) a city walk, yesterday to the market, nice with all the chopped off animal heads and bulls dicks being prepared. Loads of little cute hamsters for the Peruvian dinner and dried lama embryos. On monday we went to eat cebiche with our teachers, lovely seafood marinated in lime. Seafood is really good here, squid, octopus, sole, shrimps, sea snails etc etc. I also met my two roommates, Judith and Sabien, who ... read more

Hola! Just a quick one this time. I´m flying through southern Peru at the moment, so that I can get to Lima in time for my flight to Santiago - yeah, yeah, yeah, I´m backtracking again. I thought I´d finally left Chile and Argentina for good, but apparently there´s a new law of physics that keeps dragging you back... Yesterday was Cuzco, today is Arequipa, tomorrow is Nazca, then I get to sleep in a real bed after spending two nights trying to fall asleep on a bus seat that doesn´t recline to horizontal. As you can see by the photos, I counteracted my ruin-fatigue with spanish architecture. The town is full of buildings with fantastic details carved into every nook and cranny. There´s nothing in Australia quite like it.... read more
