Thursday 31st August 2006 Flight from Madrid to Lima Bad news -flight was delayed two hours. Good news - upgraded to business class which made the 12 hour flight 'fly by'!! Fully reclining seats, personal TV’s with films, games and music as well as a live camera stream from the back of the plane! Best of all however, a free wash bag with lots of bits in!!! Arrived in Lima airport only to have to wait an hour for our bags to arrive off the plane. We went through to the arrivals room to utter chaos! Luckily we quickly spotted our taxi driver waving his sign with "Denise Barnett" correctly spelt and in big red letters, fantastic! The drive from the airport to the hotel in Miraflores, some 15km south of the city was gut wrenching ... read more

Hello All, Welcome to our blog (check out our command of technology!) Please please forward this to anyone you think may wish to hear of our adventures and for any of you who don’t, we are assured it is easy to unsubscribe (just don’t ask how!) So for the first mini leg of our trip - Lake Garda and the wedding. We departed relatively uneventfully from Bristol, although we did nearly miss our flight chatting in the bar - you know how it is! We arrived in Venice and picked up our car. It was meant to be a Citroen C2 which Aled actually quite fancied driving, but it turned out to be a Fiat Panda with an uncanny resemblance to a disability car - so we renamed it the Fiat Disablo. Appearances aside it served ... read more

What a nightmare journey to get to the jungle!!! Left Bonaire yesterday as scheduled and had an ok flight into Lima. Only 3.5hrs, although we did then spend 30 minutes circling over Lima until there was a space to land! Out of the airport into the chaos of Lima - it´s totally mad...men everywhere shouting at you about money changing, taxis, going to cusco etc etc. We managed to get a taxi with a nice driver who spoke good english - learned that taxi drivers don´t bother getting car insurance....agreed this was probably a combination of the state of their vehicles (smell of burning rubber from right wheel arch area most of the way there) and the fact that ALL drivers in Lima are totally crazy...they basically just zig zag backwards and forwards across the roads ... read more

this is really sad in some ways as our tour has come to and end and we are sad to not be travelling on with everyone, but it will be nice to not be in such a huge group!!! as we had had to wait so long to do the island trip it was later than we had expected when we reached lima. we just had time to have showers before meeting up to go out for our last meal all together. Nic was flying out that night so people were already starting to leave!!! we went to a bbq restaurant and matt advised us on a meal we should get. it was a mixed grill for 5 people, between 11 of us. we were a bit dubious whether there would be enough food for all ... read more

Ok, enough about me and my pining. I have been wanting to post pictures up in here, but when I tried the other day, it took forever to load, and by the time it was done loading, it said it could not load. Needless to say, I wanted to destroy something. I will get some pictures on here sooner or later. I want to give you all an idea of how things are in Lima where I am living. Lima is divided into several districts (40 or so). I am living in a smaller, safe district called Jesús María. There are many things to do in Lima like discotecas, malls, beaches, tours, museums, movies, and such. However, it is winter here, and it is literally overcast EVERYDAY. I have seen the sun once in over a ... read more

So today is our last day and we will be spending it in Lima, the city that many told us was only full of crime, pollution and traffic. What we have found is many people looking out for us, a beautiful city center, an amazingly cheap and wonderful hostel in an old colonial house and yes traffic and security issues the same as any city in the USA. One more day and then it is back to having no excuse for not understanding what people are saying, hot summer weather, George Bush as president (we have met no one who likes him here) and school and work. On one good note, the new president in Peru Alan Garcia wants to renegotiate the Free Trade agreement being considered with the USA.... read more

Ok, first of all, muchísimas gracias to all of you that sent me messages and what not. I can honestly feel your prayers working down here. As cheesy as that sounds, let me attempt to explain it. My mom told me that she is praying for me, as well as the rest of my family. Very quickly after composing my last blog entry, things took a complete 180. I have made some awesome friends here that are in the same boat as I am, and the others are native Peruvians that are patient and amiable. These happenings are your prayers at work. Despite my last entry, I have never felt like I was not capable of surviving here. I know I can do it, but I feel it is important to make myself vulnerable, and for ... read more

Lima Well we finally finally are leaving Ecuador! We made our way to Guayaquil to get an overnight... well 24hr bus to Lima. We started out from Puerto Lopez at 4am on a bus to Guayaquil. We then had to wait for 3 hours for our bus to Lima. Whilst there this lovely Columbian woman started speaking to us... in rapid spanish. Cam followed little... I followed little more... no it wasn´t that bad... I just had to concentrate really hard. She was encouraging me to travel to Columbia and said that its not dangerous at all. Maybe next time! Then we left Guayaquil!! All was going swimmingly... we crossed border... and into PERU!! We were given hot meals onboard. The buses are very comfy as you can see... so we watched the movies - strangely ... read more
