Maiden lista senkun kasvaa matkallamme ja eilen lauantaina saavuimme turvallisesti Perun paakaupunkiin Limaan sopivasti juhlimaan maan itsenaisyyspaivaa. Tosin taksikuskimme lentokentalta kertoi, etta uusi presidentti ei ole juhlallisuuksista valittanyt tana vuonna, mutta niinpa tuo naytti Merriot-hotelli olevan pullollaan CD-laatoilla varustettuja mustia Mersuja... Lisaksi taman aamun lehdet olivat pullollaan maan paamiehen kuvia samoin kuin meilla 7.12. lehdet iltapukuja. Valparaisosta menimme bussilla suoraan lentokentalle torstai-iltana, koska taksi Santiagon keskustasta kentalle olisi maksanut liian monta pesoa meidan budjetille, eivatka bussit tai metro ajaneet yovuoroa, ja olimme paattaneet saastaa nukkumalla kentalla. Kahvilassa missa soimme iltapalaa oli selkeasti totuttu kentalle yoksi jaaviin, koska kukaan ei hoputtanut pois pehmeilta nahkasohvilta. Yo meni rauhallisesti, m... read more

During my brief two hour stay in Lima it was hard to find a redeeming feature, I’m not sure if that’s because there aren’t any or because I wasn’t looking properly. In any case I moved swiftly down the coast to Pisco which is a small town along the Pan-American highway and the base for tours to the Islas Ballestas, better known as the poor man’s Galapagos. From the small coastal village of Paracas my tour group was loaded onto a twenty seater speedboat for the short trip across the bay. Every rope and bar of the fishing boats which lined the harbour channel were smothered with hundreds of pelicans and guanay cormorants, who were steadily turning their perches white. Within five minutes of leaving Paracas I spotted a pod of bottlenose dolphins, the captain quickly ... read more

Hello everybody, We're back at the hotel in Lima for our last day in South America (for this trip, that is...). We fly out of here at 11:00 tonight, and get in to Minneapolis at 1 pm tomorrow. Should be a fun trip...! After we get home, we will sweep into action, moving to Iowa City and setting up our new home there. We´ve spent the past few days making our way back from Colombia / Ecaudor to Màncora, Peru, where we stayed for 3 days. Mancora is a surfing town in the north of Peru where tourists from all over Peru, South America, and the rest of the world go to relax, surf, and party (though it is mostly people from Lima vacationing there!). They are supposed to be a top surfing destination throughout the ... read more

Hi! We´re here in Lima again, but not for long. This afternoon we have a flight for Tumbes, Perú. Tumbes is on the northern coast, a much warmer place than Lima. You see, here in the southern hemisphere going north is like going south at home... meaning that it gets warmer as you travel north. A little confusing... We plan to spend our remaining two weeks in South America lounging on beaches, crossing as many borders as possible (hopefully to Ecuador and even Colombia), and pursuing a size large Panama hat. We hope to visit the equator, which is, in fact, a big white line painted on the ground in Ecuador where yiou can balance an egg on a nail. No joke. Mariel also hopes to get a tan. The past few days, though, we have ... read more

Just When You Think You're Gone So here I am fresh from Cuzco and ready to fly to Lima. As I come to the airport I see the two french girls yet again excpet they are flying more north then me. We sit down, have some coffee and realize that our flight has been delayed due to bad weather in Lima. Apparently this is quite common as it is almost always foggy in Lima. I was not pleased with this news simply because I wanted 5 days in Lima and that would just cut more time from Ecuador. So we all herded towards the customer service desk where they hooked us up with a nice hotel and free food for the that day and the next morning. At least that I did not mind. That afternoon ... read more

Hola! Well we arrived safely at our appointed hotel?! rather strange place considering we left such a good hostel. We weren´t quite sure of our surroundings, but went for a walk anyway. Lima is dirty, but the buildings are cute. Much better coffee up here that is for sure. In typical Australian style we sat in the hotel bar drinking cerveja (beer) whilst we watched the end of the world cup (yes Callun, Jill and I actually watched the football). After retreating to our room, we felt rather closed in so when to play cards and drink more beer in the bar. Today we awoke at 11.15am, but we didn´t find out until the after noon it actually was 10.15 (forgot to change watch back 1 hour). We wondered around the city, trying to avoid the ... read more

Well we´re on our own now. Our constant entourage of family members has made it safely home and masa and I are here now to finally begin our Trip with a capital T. It was sad to see everyone go, I have to say. And not only because now we have no interpreters.. although that´s certainly presenting more of a challenge... it was nice to have familiar faces to turn to in such a strange place. It was chaotic, yes, but it was also so comforting to have people around you with whom you can feel completely safe, comfortable and at ease. since the departure of the Carters and Youngs we have been staying with a family member of my brother in law michel, a woman named Papou. She lives in a city within the Lima ... read more

We came down to sea level - whew! I think we´re all breathing a little easier now. Well, except for that fresh Lima smog, that is! Flew from Cusco to Lima this morning, and now we´re just hanging out till our flight to the US late tonight. We have a ´day hotel´ to spend our time in. Jim and Jennie went for a museum tour, while Pat, Connie, and Janet went to McDonald´s for lunch. (Hey, sometimes a body just needs food its used to!) Assuming the Delta pilots don´t strike and the Lima fog doesn´t come in, we should be heading home at midnight tonight, due in about noon tomorrow. Bye!... read more

July 3, 2006 Back in Lima We´re back at the apartment and finally got a down day to do laundry and chill out on this damn computer telling you all about our adventures. Masa´s looking up language schools in Arequipa which will be our next stop probably on Saturday or Sunday. That´s in the southern part of Peru, but back up into the mountains so it´ll be cold again at night. As for right now this has taken forever and I think that I´ll try to keep up a little better from now on. Till then… ... read more

Because Chris called me cheap, I finally added some photos. Enjoy. BTW I know they´re on the wrong entry mostly but that took way too long to do over. So we´re back in lima now, having a day to just chill out which is so necessary right now I can´t even tell you. Shutterfly is telling me that It´s going to take about 5 hours now to upload the first file of photos off my camera. That would only cost me about 2 bucks American but do I really want to sit here for that long? Let´s see how long it takes to tell you about the last week and a half. It´s going to be corresponding with the dates of June 24 through now so don´t get tooooo confused. :)... read more
