Well after saying our very sad goodbyes to Ernie, we went to catch the Ferry from Wellington to Picton in the South Island. The ferry trip wasn't very rough (apparently it can be! Am rather glad it was calm). Picton is in a great place - I wish we had had the time to explore the Abel Tasman National Park in the area - it looks lovely - all inlets, clear blue water, beaches etc... but we just had a few hours in Picton before our bus. Picton is rather small!!! Eventually the time came to catch our bus! Through the Marlborough wine region - another place we must come back to for a few vineyard tours I think!!!! Sadly this time, we didn't have time for any wine tours - but we were able to ... read more

Well, at pretty much the last minute, we decided to go to New Zealand. Its been a hard time over the last 6 months and thought that a really nice break would be good for us! My Dad had been planning to come to Australia to visit my sister and I for his 80 birthday but he never got the chance. He was also plannning on going to New Zealand to visit a friend, Ernie, that he hadn't seen for 40-odd years who emigrated to New Zealand. So Cam and I decided that we wanted to visit Ernie as part of our trip.. So off we went to Wellington and headed up to Ernie's early the next morning... to the seaside town of Paraparaumu (para-param to pronounce) - everything on the North Island is next to ... read more

Hello Hello... After the long bus trips in South America a little 12 hour flight to Kuala Lumpur seemed pretty short!! After arriving we had to get another plane up to Langkawi. A little 45 minute flight on Malaysia’s cheap airline - AirAsia. I can't believe how easy it is to get around here. The cheap airline was only about 25 pounds return... At Langkawi we made our way to our luxury hostel. Well the only other accommodation near ours were 4-star resorts…. So we could pretend. Our hostel was rather a long way from luxury… but it was nice - it even had it's own resident monkey. Then we basically spent the next few days lazing around on the beach. Lovely lazy days. It was soooo hot though… so we ended up swimming all the ... read more

RIO!!!! So, it was off to Rio, on a relatively short 22-hour bus ride, which would complete our entirely-overland journey from Quito. We arrived and went straight to our Hostel, the 'Mellow Yellow' where we were very soon roped into going on the hostel's organised tour to the football at the famous Maracana Stadium. The match was a rather low-key affair with the giant stadium barely a fraction full. But the fans were entertaining and the match had a thrilling end. Botafogo 2 - 1 Sao Caetano. Our hostel was right near Copacabana beach and seeing as there was some sunshine, we decided to make the most of it at every opportunity! A lovely relaxing few days! We also felt the need to sample the Capirinihas (most likely spelt wrong) which are quite nice, if a ... read more

Well... we decided that as we are now really hard core bus travellers... we could take the whole of Argentina in one go! Basically we´ve travelled from the far South to the very north-east (border with Brazil)... we left El Calafate on Monday at 12pm destined to arrive in Puerto Iguazu on Thursday at 12pm (all being well!!). We took good old 3rd class bus for about 40 of the hours... 3rd class is still pretty good! Then we had 12 hours in Buenos Aires... and we wandered around feeling very unclean. But we had a nice meal and walked around to get the blood circulating. We had a "this is a small world" experience in the bus station in Buenos Aires. We bumped into our lovely nun friend. She was one of the nuns running ... read more

El Calafate Well... we survived the 40 hours on the bus... and here we are in El Calafate, Patagonia... no sign of the Dread Pirate Roberts... but it´s a lovely place to retire... a bit windy but beautiful! El Calafate is this small town next to Lago Argentino - a stunning expanse of turquoise... it´s the largest lake in Argentina. Our hostel is on the hill with gorgeous views... I think I could keep using the words stunning and gorgeous a lot... so I´ll stop here. This is a Geographers HEAVEN!!!!! For those that don´t know me... I studied it at Uni and I loved Glaciology (that does make me sound a little sad... but hey... I love it!) So first things first, we set off on a quest to see some glaciers. Actually we went ... read more

We left Sucre on a delightful 16 hour overnight bus... the most uncomfortable bus ever (no lovely reclining seats on this bus!). Just lots of people, no toilets and a few chickens underneath the bus... the road was basically a dirt track so sleep wasn´t the easiest thing!!! We arrived in La Quiaca - the border town with Argentina, at 4am... luckily they let us sleep on the bus until 7am. We found our wonderful bus company. Basically we were getting a bus from the border to Buenos Aires.... a 29 hour journey apparently... To begin with we drove for about 3 minutes... before having to get off the bus to cross the border... which was a complete joke. The Argentinian immigration is useless. It took 4 hours in total of queuing up... re-queuing up.. then ... read more

Sucre Well we finally left La Paz and headed to Sucre. We got the overnight bus which was freezing!!!! Sucre couldn´t be more different from La Paz. Where La Paz is a big city with wide roads and crazy traffic... Sucre is small (for a city), colonial (all the buildings are white with red tiled roofs), the traffic is crazy but it´s all one lane!! Sucre is nestled amongst the hills - its only about 2800m above sea level so its warmer than La Paz. Almost every day the sky is completely blue (although we have had 1 crazy thunder storm). The markets are great here. There is the Central Market and the Mercardo Campesino. In the central market there are more tourists and they hike the prices for us! The Campesino is the best... it´s ... read more
