Because Chris called me cheap, I finally added some photos. Enjoy. BTW I know they´re on the wrong entry mostly but that took way too long to do over. So we´re back in lima now, having a day to just chill out which is so necessary right now I can´t even tell you. Shutterfly is telling me that It´s going to take about 5 hours now to upload the first file of photos off my camera. That would only cost me about 2 bucks American but do I really want to sit here for that long? Let´s see how long it takes to tell you about the last week and a half. It´s going to be corresponding with the dates of June 24 through now so don´t get tooooo confused. :)... read more

We were only in Lima for four days and we used it to ease in gently to life with the Peruvians! This couldn´t have been made more pleasant than it was by Angelo, the owner of B&B Tradiciones. Despite being in a small shed with bunks for the first three nights, it was the most homely and pleasant place either of us has ever stayed. Whether it was a run through of Peruvian politics over pizza or his wife bringing us tea every two minutes it made all the difference to our perception of Lima, a place most people seem to dislike strongly! Miraflores was quite clearly the nice district with archeological ruins (a pre-inca pyramid), indian markets and the lovely Larcomar complex built onto the cliffs overlooking the Pacific. We spent the first day exploring ... read more

29 June Arrived at Lima´s Jorge Chavez airport with the unanimous conclusion that it was better than that at Miami...our opinion of which was yet to decline further. BA flight from London to Miami was pretty good - we were fed at regular intervals and there were some half decent films on, although Simon was not persuaded that now would be a good opportunity to savour that cinematic masterpiece that is Brokeback Mountain. Miami was an absolute shambles with no directions or competent staff meaning that we were not entirely convinced that our bags would make it through the ´direct´transfer they were supposed to...and we were right! Yes, as we waited beside the carousel, with, it must be said about twenty other people, the realisation slowly dawned on us that we would not be seeing our ... read more

Arrive in Lima without any hassles and straight to bed. All the boys arrive in the morning and we all watch the England game, so are depressed for the rest of the day. I spend the rest of the day shopping, excellent fun in cheap countries. Back for the custom rum and coke from the local shop then out in the local bars. Haven´t checked my email in days so shocked when I meet Shaun! Great night of dancing and fun. Spend Sunday lazing in the hostel garden in the sun followed by a great barbq. Sunday is a quiet night at Tequila Rocks. Monday night jazz bar. Not much to do in Lima so mainly party and sleep. Wednesday manage to visit the catacombs and see the 70,000 bodies bones all arranged by bone type... ... read more

Just an update on our day today. Presently awaiting the arrival back at the hotel of those who did the Nazca lines tour today. Can't wait to hear how it was. The resy of the group went to Villa El Salvadore. Words can't describe it so look it up on the Internet if you care to. Depressing, but encouraging as well. We stopped at a local market and each bought about $5 worth of rice, dry milk, cooking oil, etc for a communal kitchen where a group of women all cook together to feed the children. Please forgive spelling errors I have no idea how to backspace on this keyboard. No pics as yet since the computers in the hotel don't allow a USB connection. We leave for Cusco at 8am tomorrow morning, so may not ... read more

This is Janet speaking... The Nasca Lines were cool, the rest of the day.... well, let us just call it "discovery". "My friends, we have some bad news" was the most commonly heard phrase. The airline to take us from Lima to Ica was late, the return flight back to Lima was late, and could not land in Ica (no landing lights at the airports), so we drove to an army base where the plane could land, etc. It all made for a long day for the one hour and fifteen minute Nasca Line flight. But that part of the day rocked. We were on a 12 seat plane, everyone got a window, and the pilot made sure people on both sides got to see everything. It was a wild rollercoaster ride. (Thank GOD for dramamine!) ... read more

Arrived safely in Lima after very long but mostly uneventful trip via Atlanta. The OAT representative was there to meet us and navigate through the crowds at the airport and to the hotel in the Miraflores section of Lima. The hotel is very nice and located about 5 blocks from the ocean. Tuesday morning Connie, Janet and Pat met up with two other tour members, Biljana from Kentucky and Rosemary from Florida, and ventured out for the walk to the ocean (well actually the park which sits high atop the cliffs overloking the ocean). There are security guards and police everywhere so we felt quite safe. After an orientation with our tour leader Boris we had a very good lunch, then a city tour which included stops at a museum, the San Francisco Church and the ... read more

wow, so manu was really cool, but we had to catch an early flight this morning for lima and then an overnight bus back to my friend´s site up in the northern highlands of peru. we spent about half the day in lima just bumming around and getting some good shopping in :). we threw some laundry in at the embassy family´s house, hoping they wouldnt notice, and they headed out for jokey plaza, the huge mall in lima where we met up with some othe rpeace corps volunteers and had some really good food at chilis.. a welcome break from all the peruvian food on our manu trip, although that food was really good too. dang, i dont know if ive had any bad food yet! and it´ll just keep on getting better.. so we ... read more

Sorry! Top Five Most Interesting Experiences so far: 5. Riding in cambis. In case you don’t know, cambis are the hundred-thousand little vans that buzz around the streets of Lima taking peoples’ money and getting them from place to place. Each cambi has it’s own little man sticking his entire upper body out the window, shouting and pointing at at anybody who is not already in a cambi, begging all to ride. He uses a very rapid, almost indecipherable language to tell the destination. At every stop light and slow point in traffic, he hops out and tries to wave random people into the cambi, even if the cambi appears to be very full. If you choose to ride in a cambi (which I do every day) you are in for a fun time. It’s like ... read more
