so, today was very relaxing and a fun day at that.. we got together with some other peace corps volunteers for most of the day including: watching no less than 2 world cup games, of which i dont remember anything except one of them was so boring that no one scored any points in the entire 90 minutes of the game, and some team won the game by penalty points alone at the very end.. i think it might´ve been italy or france.. who knows. i basically missed the other game cuz i decided to check the internet instead.. then more hanging out with peace corps volunteers at the huge mall nearby, where we finally said our goodbyes and then our original crew (garett, jason and myself) went to eat some damn good ceviche and watch ... read more

so today we got on 5 hour mornign bus to a city called chiclayo, which actually is a pretty good sized city. we pretty much hung out with other peace corps volutneers all day today, which included a fair amount of debauchery that I won´t get into, but mostly drinking and eating at various restuarants.. no, there are no pictures for today, and i dont even really remember what we did... nothing to see here!!!... read more

alright, so its the next day on the granja and it just so happens to be the dad's birthday of garett's host family, which they were originally going to celebrate the following weekend, but of course with all these special guests in town, then bumped it up to today at noon just so we could be there... i dont think we were really worth it, but ok. anyways, what that means is basically kill the family livestock to make a huge lunch and more free food for all of us.. this is the life! later that afternoon we caught a tourist bus back to cajamarca where we spent the night before moving on to another town called chiclayo...... read more

Well, this was the first day in garett's site up in the granja.. this place is really creepy cuz its this religious coop with bible versus posted everywhere! I'll let the pictures do the talking, but today was pretty cool because we ate a ton of really good food cuz these chilean chefs were in town to teach the local people some new items to serve in their restaurant.. we just pretended like we belonged there and helped ourselves to some great fried pork, guineau pig, and raw ceviche trout!! yum! now thats good stuff! highlights also include visiting the local zoo, samplnig the freshly and locally made yogurt and cheese, and getting more free food from garett's host family. wow.... read more

So, apologies for the long break, but the journal is back once again! Today we got into cajamarca early in the morning after being on the bus all night long from Lima.. today we just spent hanging out in cajamarca, which is a small to medium town up in the andean highlands in northern peru.. we watched 2 of the world cup games, which i cant remember now, and had some real good ice cream and a couple cervezas... no pictures and pretty uneventful. at night we caught a taxi to garett´s peace corps site called granja porcon, which is the strangest place on earth... and exactly the same way i remmeber it from one year ago: cold, cold, and really cold. although the people are a little too nice...... read more

wow, so manu was really cool, but we had to catch an early flight this morning for lima and then an overnight bus back to my friend´s site up in the northern highlands of peru. we spent about half the day in lima just bumming around and getting some good shopping in :). we threw some laundry in at the embassy family´s house, hoping they wouldnt notice, and they headed out for jokey plaza, the huge mall in lima where we met up with some othe rpeace corps volunteers and had some really good food at chilis.. a welcome break from all the peruvian food on our manu trip, although that food was really good too. dang, i dont know if ive had any bad food yet! and it´ll just keep on getting better.. so we ... read more

ahh!! its our last day in manu! so today consists of taking the boat upstream some more and then taking the bus back out of the manu park on the long arduous road back to cuzco... i think today was something like 12 hours of travel time or more... but the scenery was pretty nice.. we ascended out of the jungle into the cloud forest, then back down again into the andean highlands where we passed through many dirty andean towns, just the usual, except for this pack of alpacas on the side of the road!... read more

So, our time in Manu is coming to a quick end now and we´re heading back up the river to leave the park. We stopped over in Erika lodge again which was our last night in the peruvian jungle ! oh no... sad.. no real new pictures to post, except we did the zip line canopy thing again, but it looked just like last time :).. bug bites are decreasing now and i probably have about 40 dead ones and 30 that are actively itching... read more

so now that we´re in the protected zone, which is primary forest, we went on all these hikes through the rainforest... it pretty much all looks the same, but its probably the densest vegetation i´ve ever seen. and everything grows bigger in the jungle.. the ants are huge and all the trees have huge spines.. its crazy. we got to see a native by the name of carlos start a fire by rubbing sticks together.. they have a differetn idea of entertainment out in the jungle. we also went to these lakes that were formed when the river overflows and then recedes.. they have some giant river otters there too that we got to see eat fish. yum. bug bite count: over 50... read more
