Central Lima is pretty dead after sundown and our hostel was like a ghost town, so we decided to move out to Barranco, a suburb of Lima on the coast. A beautiful little town, however, we went from one extreme to the other. We stayed in what can only be compared to a frat house, with the lack of sanitation, lack of women and the gratuitous drunk dude passed out on the couch. Oh well. We spent the next day walking around town and going to see The Incredible Hulk. What a piece of shit! I mean a real mess. Can´t catch a break in Lima.... read more

Alright, so this really is the last one. Miraflores and Puno are drastically different, so I didn't want to blow anyones mind with too sudden of a transition, therefore this post exists. Here we go... From Puno I took a bus in the morning to Arequipa (not as memorable as the last ride, which is a very good thing). When I arrived in Arequipa I immediately booked another bus leaving at 4:30, destination Lima. Before I say what I'm about to say, I need to clarify some things. At this point in the trip, I had no money left. For the past few days actually, I barely had any money and had been doing some hardcore budgeting in my head. My calculations concluded that I could only spend rougly $17 a day for the rest of ... read more

Eng ver bwlow.

Okay, so this is my first internet access since I arrived in Peru, All is good! I don´t want to spend too much time on here, I´m on a free computer at the hotel, and there is a line of people waiting to use it. I´ll give you some highlights. Arrived in Lima after being delayed for an hour at the terminal on the plane while Canada customs loaded off the baggage of some guy who the pulled aside on the way through the loading gates. I´ve got some interesting stories from the taxi driver from the airport, but that will have to wait. The joining hotel for the tour is in the Miriflores district of Lima, a very touristy, but very save district. There are police of one form or another on virtually every street ... read more

Graham and I are currently waiting to get our taxi to the airport to catch the flight to Cusco and begin our Spanish course, so what better time to fill you in on the first few days of our adventure. To say that everything has gone smoothly would be a lie. Firstly, our connection from Madrid to Lima was cancelled and hence we´d need to catch a flight at 08.40 on Tuesday morning, following a brief stay in a Madrid hotel. This wasn´t particularly bad news as we expected a swanky hotel to be offered by the airline Comet and there was also a rumour that we´d be bumped up to first class. The flight to Madrid worked perfectly and we were right about the hotel. Massive. After a cracking buffet and a few cervezas at ... read more

This being the first entry I feel obliged to blog our means of arrival as well as our first few days in Barranco. Having flown for two and a half hours on a plane boasting legroom about three inches shorter than the length of your thigh, I was surprised to discern the words ´business class´ from the attendant who took our tickets on boarding out long-haul from Madrid. For some completely unknown reason we had been upgraded and spent the next 12 hours in luxury! Seats reclining to a fully horizontal position offering massage and memorising your most comfortable position, menus offering veal and tunabelly and hostesses offering unlimited champagne made for a surprisingly quick flight. Having enjoyed a wide variety of unexpected business-class experiances we landed and found a man holding a ´Bedraski´sign... We had ... read more

Visitamos a praça ... read more

Arequipa and the Colca Canyon Next stop after the Inca Trail was Arequipa, Peru´s second biggest city and called the "white city" because of all its buildings which are made from white volcanic rock. There are also 3 volcanoes surrounding the city, one of which you can see the top of (covered in snow) from the city centre. I was still suffering from a freezing-nights-on-the-Inca-Trail-induced cold but luckily the weather was boiling hot so we spent lots of time wandering around the city in the sunshine! And then we treated ourselves to a trip to the cinema in the evening and saw the new Indiana Jones. The film was pretty rubbish but its set in Peru and talked about lots of the things we'd seen or were going to see which was really cool. In fact ... read more

After having read about taxi kidnappings on the internet, I was prompted to make arrangements before my trip for a driver to come pick me up at the airport and drop me off at a reputable hostel. Yet here I was, wandering around the airport at nine o’clock at night, driverless. I asked the information booth where I could make arrangements for a hotel and an official taxi to take me there. At this point, it would make sense to pay more for a nicer hotel rather than wander around at night looking for the hostel which I booked. They point me up, towards the second floor, “you’ll find some travel agents there to help you.” I nodded. “Gracias.” As I walked off the escalator to the second floor, a man in a uniform greeted me. ... read more
