Tomorrow will I live, the fool does say;
Today itself is too late; the wise lived yesterday.

It was a late flight to Arequipa - the last flight in fact. The lights at the small airport were turned off shortly after I picked up my bag. “Taxi! Taxi!” the man yelled. Right next to him was another man. “Hotel? Come with me. I have Taxi.” “No, he is pirate. He’ll rob you!” An older taxi driver walked up flashing his badge. “Official Taxi!” “Pirate!” Another Taxi driver pointed. It was feeding time and I was the feed. I thought to myself - what have I gotten myself into. How did the fat Chinese kid from Oakland come up with the idea to solo his way through Arequipa halfway around the world? One thing I’ve realized about life is that I can control the decisions that I make, but I’m helpless to the outcomes. ... read more

It was cold. I needed something to keep my noggin warm. I heard that alpaca was one of the finest wools in the world. “…es alpaca.” She said. “Cuando es?” “Treinta soleis.” She replied. I took the hat and held it up to the sun like I knew what I was doing, squint my eyes as if to scrutinize the fibers. “No. Es synthetico.” I said jokingly. “Es alpaca.” She replied firmly. I put my nose to the hat and breathed in. I had saw someone else do the same several days ago. Monkey see, monkey do, right? “Eh... Es alpaca con synthetico. Veinte Soleis.” I offered. She nodded, so I paid her and walked out with a new hat. To this day I have no idea what my cap is made of. ….. “So, do ... read more

I gasped for breath. The dance was a chaotic swirling of colors: blues and reds, oranges and browns. We moved to the sound of Andean flutes, in a small house, on a tiny little island, on Puno Lake, under the star-filled Andean sky. I slept very well that night. ..... They lived on a lake atop islands made of totoro weed, in houses made totoro weed, even ate totoro as a snack. I had thought that such a thing was outside the realm of what was possible. Yet, here I was standing solidly on a floating island of weed. Makes me wonder what else is possible. ….. "Cuy al Horno, senior." The waiter announces as he place the plate in front of me. On it, a roast guinea pig split down the center line into two ... read more

After having read about taxi kidnappings on the internet, I was prompted to make arrangements before my trip for a driver to come pick me up at the airport and drop me off at a reputable hostel. Yet here I was, wandering around the airport at nine o’clock at night, driverless. I asked the information booth where I could make arrangements for a hotel and an official taxi to take me there. At this point, it would make sense to pay more for a nicer hotel rather than wander around at night looking for the hostel which I booked. They point me up, towards the second floor, “you’ll find some travel agents there to help you.” I nodded. “Gracias.” As I walked off the escalator to the second floor, a man in a uniform greeted me. ... read more

Now that I am back home, I can sit down and actually digest what has happened during the past month or so. It's been a long strange trip. I was starting to get use to being on the road. Going where ever I wanted. Doing whatever i wanted. I felt free. I was getting comfortable with living my life out of a backpack too. Owning three T-shirts seemed a little rough at first, but it quickly became the norm. When I came home, there was a bit of a reverse shock. Home seems so much more luxurious. At first I was a bit happy to be back. Home is rich in comforts, but I find my life poor in excitement. The more I readjust to my normal life, the more I'd rather be on the road ... read more

I won a lot of Wons

Nothing to really report here. I spent 24 hours stopover in South Korea and did nothing but eat and gamble at the hotel by the airport. I won bunch of money gambling. I started with 10,000 Wons and ended the night with 360,000 Wons. The denominations in Korean money are really big. While gambling, I wasn't actually sure how much my winnings were in in relation to US dollars. So I was really happy, thinking that I made a small fortune. After all, I had three hundred sixty thousand Wons. Doesn't that number sound big? Eventually I went back up to my hotel room and realized that I had only won the equivalent of some three hundred some odd US dollars. Not bad, but I'm going to blow it all on all-you-can-eat restaurants when I get ... read more

I wish I could have stayed a bit longer on the beaches of Sanya, sipping cheap beer and coconut juice, but my last few days in China will be spent making my way to Hong Kong International Airport as quickly as possible. I’ve covered an amazing amount of distance in a month but unfortunately, I am out of time and need to rush. I had decided to travel through Guangzhou and Shenzhen from Sanya in order to cross the Hong Kong border and fly home. I was born in Guangzhou so I should have a special attachment to the place, but I really don't. I have only spent a very small part of my childhood there, and visited once or twice in my life. For me, the "going home" meant going back to California, this is ... read more

I got off the bus at Sanya and was immediately lost, walking around looking for a street sign, a local asked me what I was looking for and pointed me in the right direction. Later on, I repeatedly asked random strangers for directions and they all were willing to help. Finally, one guy gave me a ride on his motorbike to the hostel I was looking for. The people here are so friendly. They call Sanya China's Hawaii. With its warm tropical climate, clean azure blue oceans, and fresh unpolluted air, Sanya has a completely different feel compared to the rest of China. The tourist boom has hit Sanya in a big way; there hotels and resorts everywhere you look. For some reason, this place is really popular with the Russians, some of the street signs ... read more

Lijiang is a big tourist stop like Pingyao and Shangrila, and like those cities, it has its own "old town" which is kept pseudo-rustic for the tourist. If you like Disneyland, then chances are, you might like Lijiang as well. The "old city" is one big construction project meant to be something pretty to look at for tourist. If you can stop telling yourself that it is all fake, then you can start enjoying it. What is available at Lijiang are nicely packaged experiences like horse riding tours and Naxi culture shows. However, do yourself a favor and avoid all that. Go travel around Yunnan and meet the Naxi people for yourself. Go out to Tiger Leaping Gorge where the horse ranchers will gladly rent you one of their horses (which I did and turned out ... read more

Zhongdian is otherwise know as Shangrila, marks the western most point of my journey on this backpacking trip. The city itself is prosperous thanks to a booming tourist trade. Here, it is possible to get a small peek into Tibetan culture without going to Tibet and dealing with all the hassles of getting a permit associated with it. For anyone going to Tibet, this would probably be a nice stop to get adjusted to the altitude before going any higher. I've been feeling the effects of altitude sickness here and have not been sleeping well. The thinner air makes strenuous hikes more exhausting. However, hiking around Shangrila is very rewarding, there are a number of hills and mountains in the area south of the old city. At some places, one can see the name, Shangrila, inscribed ... read more
