Nearing the end of our South American adventure, we found ourselves in Quito for 5 nights, and had high hopes of spending the time wisely...sadly this was not to be. We stayed in the main touristy area of town Mariscal (?) in a lovely room above a coffee shop, surrounded by bars and restaurants..we even bumped into our mate Sally who had just arrived on a 48hr bus journey from Peru. However, Quito doesn't really appear to have that much to offer...plenty of bars, if you like your bars with security guards and pistols, plenty of streets which you're told are too dangerous to walk down, but not a whole lot else. The coffee is generally also pretty crap for a country famous for selling the stuff... We visited the old town, which was nice...but that's ... read more

A couple of days ago I went on a trip to Mitad Del Mundo ("Middle of the World") which is on the Equator, just north of Quito. It´s a bit of a tourist trap (with corny photo opportunities as you can see) but I had an entertaining afternoon there with some of the other people from the Spanish school. The precise location of the line of the Equator has been measured with GPS and they´ve set up a few experiments that prove it. We watched water going down a plug hole of a sink anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere, clockwise in the southern hemisphere and straight down on the Equator. I balanced an egg on the head of a nail on the Equator - apparently the only place where it´s easy to do that. Last night ... read more

We arrived in Atacames at about 11:30pm went straight towards the ocean or beach front, and found a bar as we had been in the car since 10am that morning apart from the strenuous little excursion to see butterflies which we did not see.. but had a great time in the process...(sidetracked again SORRY all)... sat looking at the ocean in a bar on the beach and proceded to get ... read more

Lift off baby! Cruising 32 thousand feet in our upper atmosphere, all I could think about was getting to the nearest travel agency upon arrival. I was hungry to see what kind of adventures I could get myself into. I also couldn’t help thinking about sinking my teeth into the filet of salmon that I was just served in First Class. Yeah, that's right...First Class. I was randomly selected by the computer to be bumped up, meaning fat, fluffy seats, a gourmet lunch, moist towels, and royal treatment (life's good). I must say that I sure stuck out among the high class, dressed in my backpacker garb, unshaven scruff, and an unshowered funky aroma that I believe originated from me. The flight was short, but sweet. Seconds after crossing the equator into the Southern Hemisphere, we ... read more

Hi there! I started to write this blog in Baños (a small holiday town in the south of the high Sierra) on Sunday, but events overtook me and now I am in Quito, waiting to go to the Galapagos islands very early tomorrow morning. It all seems a bit surreal, as I can´t let myself believe I am really going until I get there... So, what have I been up to recently? As I mentioned above, I spent last weekend in Baños with six other volunteers from La Hesperia. We left on Friday evening and spent Saturday cycling towards Puyo, 60km away along a beautiful road that follows a river with lots of waterfalls. The views were amazing, and we had great fun, stopping to admire the waterfalls and eat our lunch. But most of us ... read more

The trip to Cotopaxi was cancelled, but I did manage to get out to Otavalo on Saturday, a two hour journey from Quito. Matt, Kira and myself were not on our best form having been out late on Friday in the New Town drinking beers and Margaritas, but we soon felt better when we got out of the city and into some amazing mountainous landscapes. Danny, our driver and guide pointed out numerous mountains, volcanos and lakes, each one as spectacular as the last. We stopped near Imbabura, a volcano that reaches a height of over 4500 metres and overlooks Lago San Pedro. After watching a display of indigenous music and dancing we set off again for Otavalo. The outdoor market there is absolutely huge and there is a vast array of weavings, hammocks, rugs, clothes, ... read more

Haven´t managed to eat any guinea pig yet as the restaurant wasn´t serving it that day, but had a good look around the Old Town in Quito yesterday. There are lots of churches built by the Spanish settlers, some on the sites of old Inca buildings. The grandest of these is the Compañia, where almost everything is covered in gold leaf, a showpiece of the wealth of the old Spanish colonials - although they stole much of their gold from the Incas and melted it down for churches like this. Also went to the Palacio Del Gobierno where the president of Ecuador lives and works. You can´t go all the way inside but the two guards at the entrance don´t look like they would be very effective if you really wanted to! Later I went up ... read more

The Galapagos Islands are a true wonder... they are really spectacular! I have spent the past week sailing around the islands, swimming with seal lions, penguins, turtles, iguanas, sharks. They are all really friendly and come right up to you. I had a few special moments with a penguin.. who was looking at me with the same fasination I was looking at him! . The sea lions would swim to me as if they were coming right for me, then gracefully swim above or below me! On land it was really special too.. we saw blue footed boobies and masked boobies! The blue footed boobies do look as if someone has painted them! I saw flamingos, albatross and frigets.. loads and loads of birds. Got treated to a few mating sessions too! The flamingos were the ... read more

Well a quick update for all you people back at home. Thursday the 1st was a total washout in Baños - felt like I was back in England with the amount of rain there was - it literally rained all day apart from a 2 hour window of cloudiness. So I decided to have a lazy day - did a bit of my teaching english course and then spent a couple of hours at the hot baths which are outdoors so it was quite cool being submerged in 32oC water when it was raining!! Was not totally peaceful as my visit coincided with a 40 children strong school trip!! However, there was one advantage of the rain on Thursday and that was for whitewater rafting on Friday - yeay!! As it had rained so much the ... read more
