More photos for your delectation! Horseriding was great - Hannah hadn´t done it since she was 13 so we were hoping to take it easy but in true Ecuadorian gaucho style we set off at a full pelt gallop with me feeling slightly guilty and hoping she would be ok. Wasn´t like that the whole way - just most of it! We were probably the nuisance of all the villages we galloped through - Ecuadorian equivalent of Boy Racers on Southend sea front. The guide Wilson was on a very fast horse and I kept trying to race him - unfortunately Rocillo just couldn´t cut the mustard! The horses were really well looked after and we got back to some food and also chatting to Marcello (4 years old who I put a photo up of) ... read more

1st to 25th May 2006 Traveling up from Lima to Quito in time to meet Sarah was one of those journeys. Serves me right for not shelling out for the airfare the whole way I suppose (that'll be the Scots blood at work again)! After a typically delayed flight north, I turned up at Tumbes airport (northern Peru) which is a three-room, two-bit terminal that was, on this particular night, full of four inch long, flying Crickets. The heat, even at midnight, was opressive and the Crickets irratating but, not as much as the taxi drivers with their "you walk then" attitude. Walk I did not and after a short but, expensive cab ride I was at the bus station chancing my arm at trying to get directly to Guayaquil in Ecuador that night. "Chancing it!" ... read more

Only two days left of the South American extravaganza. Quito seems to be filled with gringos stopping by to see the equator (I can´t think of many other things they´d be here to see). Spent last night in Baños, soaking in a hot spring pool at night underneath a waterfall, chatting with two people I had met the day before at a hostel in Cuenca. Baños is highly recommended; I wish I had more time there now. Cuenca was a nice enough place - the ecuadorian equivalent of peruvian Arequipa (lots of old colonial buildings, lots of people), before that I was leaving the farm in Vilcabamba for civilisation after two weeks without chocolate and electricity. I ended up working on the farm outside Vilcabamba for two weeks - twice as long as I initally intended, ... read more

Volcanoes, volcanoes and more volcanoes.. as its on the equator, Ecuador has many of these natural wonders a few of which are active and one is on an alert warning- its errupting! We left Cuenca and headed to Riobamba to see and climb (to the 2nd refugio) the highest one (and the 2nd highest peak in SA), Chimborazo (6310m). It was huge and just like a volcano from my imagination. We climbed upto the second refugio and it was an easy gradiant, but diffucult because of the altitude again! It was completely bare of any life up there.. but was amazing! That night we went off into the mountains to see Tungurahua errupt closely. It has been errupting for 2 weeks and we saw the black smoke of the erruption in the day but wanted to ... read more

Another week. Another blog. I’m sure you must be bored reading all this by now… ;-) Last week’s instalment was a bit of an epic, and this week’s threatens to be just as longwinded. So, to help the easily confused (including myself), I’ll give a quick summary of the last seven days instead: Saturday and Sunday - Took a bus (or three) through the central highlands to a little market town called Guaranda high in the mountains with two of the new volunteers. The roads to and from this town are famous in Ecuador for their beauty, and have amazing views of the extinct Volcano Chimborazo. The town itself is quiet and friendly, with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside from a viewpoint on the edge of town. The road to Guaranda rises to over 4000 ... read more

We arrived in cuenca, a colonial city in the south of Ecuador.. back at altitude! On our way we passed millions of bananas... for miles and miles! Cuenca is a really pretty colonial city with beautiful churches and buildings. There is loads to to surrounding it too, including Cajas national park with loads of lakes. We decided to do have some mountain adventures on the back of a horse.. it was really fun. We went through the mountains on horseback and could see amazing views. We stopped at the top of the mountain for lunch..It was really beautiful. Lo´s horse was a bit naughty and would chose not to carry on.. and just stop! Mine was very rapido and would gallap.. no matter how much I shouted Alto.. he just wouldnt stop! The next day we ... read more

Hello from Quito to everyone wherever in the world you may be. Arrived about all of 2 hours ago and it's ace! Met so many people already and had a very nice chat half in Spanish with Wilson (from Ecuador) who was sat next to me on the plane - I think he was quite amused by my random outbursts in Español interluded with asking him how to say stuff in Spanish - also practiced on the taxi man Manuel who is now my personal Ecuadorian cabbie! So all is good - altitude hasn't affected me at all at the mo though i may be speaking too soon on that one. Have opted for the hostel 3 course beast of a feast for my tea tonight and popping back there in a mo. Location is amazing ... read more

Well... one can only take so much sun-soaking in a day so´s thought we ought to do some work. Survived Quito. This isn´t really fair as it is a beautiful city, but having to travel point-to-point by taxi after dark is a real shame. Anyways, managed to buy a new camera (not that we´re adding photos just yet due to computer gliches). This was an interesting experience with our minimal Spanish and the store´s complete lack of English. Nevertheless, a result - not only did we gain a camera, but also (and just what every backpacker needs) a free toasted sandwich maker?! Travelled south to the hot springs resort (for westerners and Equadorians alike) of Baños. Again like most Equadorian towns/cities it sits surrounded by mountains, hills, n volcanoes. Stayed at a great guest house "Santa ... read more
