HI there again, I am now adjusting to life back on the planet Earth after 8 days in paradise on the Galapagos Islands, 1000kms off the coast of Ecuador. Diana, Carolyn and I flew over there May 3 and joined a small launch with 7 other tourists and sailed north to 3 lovely islands and snorkled with reef sharks, giant turtles, penguins, sting rays, sea lions and countless tropical fish. We climbed volcanoes, watched marine iguanas, sea lions playing on the beach and in the water and saw amazing sunsets. On the 2nd day we chased and caught up with a pod of over 50 large dolphins and watched them for over 2 hours. After 24 hrs in port where we dropped off Ida from Italy and picked up an Aussie from Sydney called Alex, we ... read more

kyle and i head out of here on wednesday! its been a busy week for us because there is only 6 of us. we have had a new cappuchin monkey that is really amazing at escaping. it really is unbelievable how he escaped four times this week. it has taken up quite a bit of time for us to go chasing him down but it is always entertaining. we got a bunch of new turtles that came in from different homes and such and the back of the police truck had blood all over it from the turtles. when we asked the police about it they said they were all the way they found them from their homes. it is really a strange feeling when you are carrying an animal and then see it´s blood on ... read more

Hola Chicos y Chicas! Another week has passed, and what a diverse week it has been. Last weekend I was in Quito, and met up with my Swiss friend Maggie, and we had a catch up. She had just come back from her second attempt to scale Cotopaxi, the world’s highest active volcano (5,897m/ 19,347ft), and she was quite despondent about failing for a second time. She needed more time to climb the final section of the ascent to the summit, and had to turn back with her guide at 5,400 meters. She is now determined to go back to Switzerland, get some serious climbing practice in, and return to conquer Cotopaxi! Incidentally, she managed to climb higher than any peak in the Swiss Alps, an achievement that didn’t make her feel any better. I would ... read more

From Bogota, we drove out to a nearby town (on a private bus) called Villa de Leyva. It´s a very pretty place (when the sun shines - it was a bit of a struggle to see this when we first arrived as it was tipping it down with rain), with a huge main square (Plaza Mayor) and lots of quaint cobbled streets (bit of a challenge in the rain!). The main square itself is completely cobbled which is quite unusual and it´s a lot quieter than other squares of its size - it´s actually one of the largest in South America. We woke up the next day to beautiful sunshine and took the private bus again for a day of sightseeing in the surrounding area. First stop was "El Fosil", who was an ancient dinosaur, looking ... read more

Arrived in Quito on 27/4 and it was pouring rain and freezing cold. Quite a change from balmy Cuba. Went to our travel agent to pick up our tickets for the Galapagos Islands only to find out that the tour operator had double-booked and stuffed up our reservation. To cut a long story short, the agent as a gesture of good faith changed our booking at their expense from the original 16-person tourist boat to a 96-person luxury cruiser, a difference of about US$500 each. The boat (Santa Cruz) was brilliant, the service was A-1, and the yummy food and cocktails were never-ending. We couldn´t believe our luck. I can understand why people rave about the Galapagos. It has to be one of the most fabulous experiences ever. The rare wildlife are fairly used to humans, ... read more

so the most exciting thing that happened this week is us getting by without leon! we have been cleaning the cages and such, everything like usual. kyle and greg cleaned out the big cats this week and the not-so-small lion cubs. with the lion cubs, they seemed really confused by what was going on. we tried to put them into an enclosure down at the end of their cage and it was working out fine. The lions are named Moku and Manu. i was distracting them while the guys were in the cage cleaning. moku was doing fine playing with me and a soccer ball but manu started to walk around and jumped up on the concrete part of the cage and realized that he could stick his paws through. shortly after he realized if he ... read more

Hello folks, Welcome to another installment of my blog. This week has been a week of preparations, and small steps forward... The first of the big groups come to the reserve from Monday, and it has been all hands on deck to get the preparations done. Rather than start the English classes in the midst of all this upheaval, we have decided to wait a while until the Community project isn't in the information-seeking stage (where we are right now), and I can be more based at the reserve during the week, rather than in the internet cafe or similar, where I need to be right now. I had a big internet 'binge' in Quito yesterday, and i think I've found lots of useful information for the various Community projects, but I will take the info ... read more

There is just one word to describe the Galápagos Islands which is either AwesomeHasToBeSeenToBeBelievedKindOfPlace or simply wow. Hope you understand that I had to add a million pictures I simply could not decide which to let out. The history of the Islands is the reason why this place is so amazing. The Galapagos Islands are a group of volcanic islands which were created over a couple of million years through a static hotspot in the earths crust. The tectonic plates over the hotspot shift and new Islands are created every now and then even today. Therefore the island the furthest away from the hotspot are the oldest. The last proper volcanic eruption was in 1998. The Islands where never connected to the mainland and the animals and plants migrated at one stage to the Islands but ... read more
