Just a quickie, and don't we love 'em?..things moving fast and a 6am flight mañana to Galapagos...too good to pass up and I'll be away for 8 days...or longer if the boat sinks, hurricanes, passionate affairs, pissed and fall over or all of the above..... and Peru was saved at the last, on the last night in Mancora I met a couple of people who could count past 10 without taking off their sandals... Kia at the Fluid Bar was hospitable, friendly, put in extra chile and gave me hope that Peru has promise!..... And Mancora was a pretty nice place to hang out. Then off to Ecuador, last run thru' the cop gauntlet, successful!, then the usual confused, confusing, sign-less battery of officials, customs, immigrasi etc...then good roads, friendly people, a noticeable improvement on the ... read more

Hi there! You'll be pleased to know I managed to make it across the Atlantic without incident, and even managed to find my connecting flight at Miami, which wasn't as easy as it should have been. Full marks to the folks at American Airlines though, my Heathrow-Miami flight was good. Funny and friendly flight attendants, decent food, a plentiful supply of drinks and a reasonable selection of in-flight movies. I even saw a couple of good episodes of Frasier! Added to this I could leave my window shutter open to see the amazing views of the US eastern seaboard (not like Iberia last time!), and we got into Miami half an hour early, which as it turns out was just as well... I have to say I really wasn't impressed by the chaos of Miami airport, ... read more

Well, I'm not in Ecuador anymore, but there's a lot to fill in so I'm posting this from 'Quito'. It's my birthday--- I do what I want. My last three weeks in Ecuador were filled with sea lions, mountain treks, and being run off the road by an 800 person protest. My parents and I had a lot of adventures. The Galapagos Islands were amazing. My mother compared it to the Peaceable Kingdom, where the lion lays down with the lamb. Animals of every size and type were all living on these islands without any fear of each other. We'd see sea lions basking next to iguanas, birds nesting next to lava lizards, and nothing, absolutely nothing cared that we were there. You could have walked up to one of the birds and pulled out a ... read more

Hola amigos!! Well it's a logistical nightmare here in Ecuador at the moment!! The government are about to go into talks to sign a free trade agreement (TLC) with the US and the indigenous people are up in arms. They believe that they will lose their cultural heritage and will suffer even more financially as they'll be unable to compete. Hence they burn tyres or form human blocades to close the roads...as in MOST of the roads so you can't get anywhere! There has also been a recent protest about the rise in the price of cooking gas and the status of workers for a petroleum company. Leaving Quito last Monday morning my bus arrived just as they were finishing a mud blockade across the main Panamerican highway fortunately there was a bus waiting at the ... read more

Hola amigos, it´s been a while!! Well, my time in Quito has been fairly quiet so far. There´s only 9 students at the school, and some of them are quite old, so we´ve not really been doing much together. Did manage to get a bit of a kick around going on Wednesday, Europe v Quito! Europe lost 10-9. Next time!!! I´m definitely acclimatising to the altitude now. Other than that, the only point of interest was the house of Eduardo Kingman (who died in 1997). He´s one of the two most famous Ecuadorian artists (along with Oswaldo Guayasamín (1999)). Kingman is famous to those who know for the prominance of hands in his artwork. I quite liked it. And the house was realy nice, converted and extended from an old bakery, in a semi-rural location in ... read more

This week has been lots of work but not a whole lot going on. On Sunday Kyle and I were in Baños but we didn´t get to go horseback riding like we had planned instead we went on the chiva again. It was totally worth it! The waterfalls were so amazing! We saw 7 waterfalls and 3 rivers. At one of the stops we saw people doing what they call bridge jumping, but it looked just like bungee jumping. one of the girls on our chiva tried it and when she got back on i asked her what she thought. her response i´m still unsure of, she either said delicioso or peligroso. either way kyle and i are going to do it next time we go. our hostal was really nice; we got free internet and ... read more

OK, at last I´m in Quito!! And I don´t just mean that in a "thank **** I´m not in Santiago anymore" way. My ridiculous flight via Panama city (11 hours instead of 5 direct), became even more ridiculous. Everything had been eficient and on time, we were coming in to land in Quito....then the pilot went to full throttle, and up we went again!! Apparently the fog and rain meant we had to divert to Guayaquil and stay overnight. So after 20-odd hours of travelling, I finally arrived in Quito, unsure what would have happened with my transfer etc. But all was good, even if I missed a day of classes. New family are really friendly (Jaime, Anita, and 3 grwn kids, Cristina, Veronica and Andrés), and the house is really nice and big. Oh, and ... read more

This weekend I am in Baños. For those of you who know spanish, yes it means bathrooms! It is named that because of the thermal baths that are everywhere. The town is at the bottom of a volcano so that´s how they are heated. The town is beautifu! Tonight Kyle and I are going to see the volcano on a trolley and tomorrow we are going horseback riding to see the waterfalls. This week has been a little hard because we had a squirrel monkey and a cappuchin monkey die. I cried my eyes out when I saw the squirrel monkey die. It was so human like. The cappuchin that died was Kyle´s favorite, the same one that pulled my hair. On a lighter note I got my nose pierced and we took a cappuchin monkey, ... read more

I’m living in a tarantula breeding ground. I share my ‘toilet’ with a boa constrictor and poison dart frogs. My bath is a stream, my best friend, a machete. We have the “smelly scale” which runs from 1-10. 1 being ok; 10 being unbearable. Where I am right now, 1-9 is acceptable. I dream of chocolate day and night. Welcome to the Amazon rainforest… We are volunteers in far eastern Ecuador. An expedition aimed at wildlife data collection and protection. Hiking the impossible jungle terrain for hours everyday, we live bathed in sweat and covered in rashes. But we smile. No privacy, no dry clothes and mould. On a massive scale. What more do you need for a whole lot of fun?... Need a clearer picture? Picture this: Sleeping under the thickest canopy of trees ... read more
