Hey everybody, first I have to apologize, I don't have any pictures to share this time. I'm in Quito and I didn't want to bring my camera along for the ride. The internet at the station isn't working right now, so I couldn't make an entry from there. As soon as it's up again, I'll post some pictures. But enough chit chat, on to the good news- I'm going to Cornell next fall to start my doctorate!! I was accepted and I have a fellowship, everything is a go. I'm going to study the behavioral ecology of nighthawks on the tallgrass prairie in Kansas. So I'll be in Kansas for the summer and Cornell the rest of the year. I'm very excited, this is almost unbelievably good news! As for what's been going on at the ... read more

OK Folks, it has finally happened! I have been attacked by a monkey! I must say it was quite exciting. Nadia, one of the volunteers, was attacked by the same monkey, but my attack was not as bad. She was bitten and scratched but I just had my hair pulled. This little monkey does not like females at all. This was Nadia´s last week, she is headed back home to South Africa. Kyle and I are a little upset but we got two new girls from Seattle. We are hanging in Quito with them this weekend and next we are off to Baños. We also got a few new animals this week. We got three wooly monkeys, a squirrel monkey, two turtles, and a parrot. A wooly monkey escaped and was found at a neighboring farm ... read more

Hola amigos y familia, Well I am in Loja about to leave on a nine hour bus ride to Piura, PERU!! Finally a new country! Arriving early tomorrow morning the plan is to continue along to the coast for a much...well NEEDED isn´t the word.... nor is deserved, maybe....-wanted- dip in the ocean. For the last two days I have been in Vilcabamba post carnivale to experience why exactly it is known as the most desirable retirement town in south america. And experience that I did. The town seems to settle into a very slow but productive pace. Slow enough to stop and say hello to the fellow townsmen that everyone seems to know but fast enough to make it feel like there is lots going on. Also the town is flanked by gorgeous mountains on ... read more

Day at sea.Lecture on Panama(Equador) hats.Sun bathing and dinner in the nicest restaraunt with our four American friends. Day 9. Manta. Frigate birds everywhere plus Pelicans and Boobies. Went ashore in the afternoon and saw One: a museum (1000 B.C. - 1800 A.D.) about Mantenes Indians who have very large noses which can be seen in many of the locals today. Two: An Ivory factory.Vegitable "Ivory" comes from the hard polished centres of special Palm seeds. We saw a tiny elephant carved and bought a Pelican. Main product is buttons of all sorts and colours. Three: Montecristi where the cottage industry for "Panama" hats is centred. Philip foolishly bought one. The one Joan bought in Lima had been made there and they thought she got it far too cheap. Day 10. Lazy day at sea. Day ... read more

This is part of an email I sent to my mom today: I went out with Joe last night (and Angie, Joe´s boyfriend who is here for six weeks) and I am pretty sure that I am glad to have them here. Still having a great time, doing lots of reading and partying. Carnivale is an absolute riot. You get soaked everytime you step out your door, both with water and with silly string. Vilcabamba (pronounced Bilcabamba,´V´s in spanish are pronounced ´b´.) is the hotspot for the surrounding areas and there must have been 5000 people on the streets, many drunk but all in good spirit. Daniel has said that he is going to be in Toronto for a while in late april and I have been talking to Kayvon about doing a month in Montreal ... read more

Flew from Quito to Cuenca, and got an early morning snap of Cotopaxi. Spent some time with Bec, on fine form. Relaxed for a couple of days, enjoying Cuenca. Then took a 10 hour bus ride back to Quito to view the chain of volcanos, but unusually was foiled by the weather. Visited the Quilotoa volcano crater, walked down into it and clambered back out.... read more

Just a quick one, as we have only really spent a day and a half in Quito. After arriving back onto the mainland on Saturday evening, we decided to book a mountain-biking trip to Cotopaxi, Ecuador’s highest active volcano. Recommended as one of the highlights of Ecuador, we were excited to get a chance to do this trip, as we expected to miss out on it due to the changes to our Galapagos tour. Yesterday morning, we met the group at 7.00am to go out to the Cotopaxi National Park. It wasn’t until meeting up with the rest of the group that I started to reconsider whether it was actually a good idea or not. Basically, the group consisted of me, and 5 other guys. Not a girl in sight - let alone one that had ... read more

We are currently sitting in the aeropuerto of Baltra - an island five minutes away from Santa Cruz in the Galapagos. It’s Saturday morning and we are waiting for our flight back to Quito after five days sailing the Galapagos Islands. We flew in to Quito last Sunday 19th February, from Cuba, where we stayed overnight before flying 1,000 km off the coast to the Galapagos on Monday morning. Landing in Quito was certainly and experience! The airport is situated pretty much in the middle of the city, which is surrounded by huge mountains. It provided an amazing view, but also I think the worst turbulence I’ve experienced to date. After landing, our taxi ride was just as treacherous, through torrential rain, hail and flooded streets of Quito. Couple that with an old leaking car without ... read more

Hola, Well it has been a very exciting week or so with lots to report although I don't really have enough time to type it all. After spending a night in Loja, a charming university city towards the south of Ecuador. Enjoying it but not loving it, I left the next day for Vilcabamba, where I am now, possibly the most gorgeous place I have ever been. After spending a night drinking rum with a nice, but quirky, British lady I stumbled back to my amazing hostel about a ten minute walk out of the small town. The next day, the first day of Carnivale, I moved to another hostel to meet up with some friends and to test out my new watergun, nicknamed Terminator. After settling in, Eva and a new friend Ory and I ... read more
