The first week has been amazing... It´s a thousand times more beautiful than I imagined it would be. I´m in the capital now (Quito), which lies in a valley with 5000m high mountains and volcanoes surrounding it. The city is filled with amazing parks, churches and plazas. It´s so easy to just spend the days wandering this place. The weather is a perpetually spring like climate, always 20c and sunny with some rain. The food is great, and everything is, relatively, very cheap. Fresh fruit from the jungle is amazing and costs only pennies, so for me it´s paradise! Beer is the same price as water here (65 cents for a 1L bottle), and authentic soccer jerseys cost $6. (E-mail me the team and size if you want one!) Most of time so far I´ve ... read more

As most of you know my time in Montañita is coming to an end quickly. As of the 14 of Feb I will be on my way to Brazil. I have to end up in Santiago, Chile by the 25 of May. What is to happen inbetween now and then is yet to be planned. I do know that I am going to visit some of the people that I met here in Montañita. Life has been busy trying to get my visa for Brazil and meeting all of it´s reauirements. I am absolutely amazed that I was able to complete all of the requirements in such a short time frame with my pathetic spanish and my lack of knowledge of the city. Must say I am rather proud of myself! At times, I do have ... read more

Time for another update! Things are going well here. I am doing well. I have found one nest so far (blue gray tanagers), and I am learning a lot. From the quetzal tapes we are going to get feeding rates and other data. They are cavity nesters so I basically watch video of birds going in and out of a hole for a good portion of the day. They are really beautiful birds. Yesterday I got the chick out of the cavity to measure and take pictures of it. Later, I will write a paper on our observations and submit it for publication. Today, the station manager, Jose, needed the camera I use to watch video to tape a nest he found in order to determine the species. So, I have a lot of free time! ... read more

Hello all, Let me first say that I really appreciate the nice things people have said about this blog: I am really blown away by how many people are actually reading it! Well I am getting closer to finding a plan for myself for the next while. What I know for sure is that I am leaving Quito on Saturday morning with my friend Tessa, bound for Riobamba. From there I think I will make my way to the coast for some much needed sun (it is usually overcast in Quito, except for some notable exceptions; notable because I get sunburnt almost every time). I am thinking that from there I will take a sailing trip around the galapagos (hopefully volunteering to save some cash) and then, if sailing still appeals to me, I think that ... read more

Studying Amazon Butterflies in Ecuador (Part I) The Shiripuno Research Center started with the odyssey of Fernando Vaca (ECUADOR) and Rodney Guerra (U.S.A) in march 2002, the goal was to help with ideas to our friend Eugenia Nieto Sevilla who begun to built a campsite for an ecotourism project in the Shiripuno River, which is inside the Anthropological Huaorani Reserve and she had been helping them to develop different ideas in the forest management. We want to taste, explore and enjoy different forest in a different region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. We had the experience of the Napo River forest experience which is still good forest, but the scenery that we were having was an indescribable forest experience. Our first night was in a comforting motorized canoe (it was leaking!) without a roof, there was a ... read more

Next stop on our cruise down the west coast of South America was Ecuador, which lies south of the Panama Canal from Guatemala. Dick and I are learning a lot about geography on this trip. My hazy guess as to how to get to Ecuador from the US was to go to Los Angeles and turn left. But it turns out, to our surprise that Ecuador is in the same time zone as South Carolina, and the shortest route between the two goes over Miami! As with any area in the southern hemisphere, now is the height of the summer season which will last through about April. Generally speaking, it is warm most of the year in this whole area. GALAPAGOS (See route map above.) At the port of Guayaquil in Ecuador we headed straight for ... read more

Wow, what a... week? Haven't really been keeping track, but whatever it has been it has been great. First of all, there are some pics online from my jungle trip. You can find them here. If anyone can figure out how to get the pics off of there please let me know! The first thing to report is a second (less dangerous) biking trip to Cotopaxi, the world's highest active valcano. After some amazing views of the glaciated valcano we finished our two hour drive at the Refugio (a shack marking the basecamp of all mountains down here) at an astonishing 4865 meters. Breathing at this altitude is not easy: it feels as though you are reaching for something you just can't grasp. After the usual pep talk and gearing up, our crew began the descent ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South » Cuenca January 26th 2006

After 6 days in the capital of Quito it was off to the southern colonial city of Cuenca. Cuenca is the old northern headquarters of the Inca empire. So the city has an interesting mix of indigenous people, mestizo and some spaniards. It is quite a relaxing place and although the people don't welcome you from the first glance the Cuencanos are actually quite nice people. Have a look at some of the sights.... read more

Executive summary: I'm still in Canoa, taking Spanish, surfing, meeting new friends, and enjoying sunsets. Spanish has been difficult to learn, even a bit fraught. Surfing conditions aren't super but it's been fun paddling in warm water every day. And I've enjoyed the break from first world costs. Learning Spanish: User Beware! My first experience with Spanish happened in the Miami airport. I was getting some Cuban fast food at a stand and the woman and I couldn't understand each other. I hadn't even left the country, so I knew I was going to be in trouble! My first successful translation once I arrived at the Sundown Hotel happened the first morning, when I tried to ask for some milk (maybe one of, oh, 100 key words I might have learned before I left). For some ... read more
