I am writing from Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, located in the southern part of the country, just north of Peru. I’ll say more on Guayaquil soon. I’ve included a few more photos from Lima, and yes, none of them show much sun. It is just how Lima is this time of year. However, one day last week there actually was a day of partial sun which was terrific. The city just seemed so much more pleasant and the Miraflores section, where I am staying, felt a lot like Miami Beach. My blog entries are usual very upbeat and several people have commented that I rarely seem to have many “issues” in my travels whether it is getting lost or being ripped off, or some other issue. Well, that changes in this blog entry as I spent ... read more

Today we went to Mindo which is a cloud rainforest. It is up in the highlands but it is very wet and has vegetation like a rainforest. Our first stop was an Orchid Reserve. Many of the orchids weren’t in bloom but we did see Heliconia and many other plants. There were lots of butterflies. We hiked to a waterfall while our guide Sebastian told us about the plants and environment stuff. While we were all standing listening to him talk a mini rock slide happened and rocks came raining down on us. Only one person was hit and it looked worse than it actually was. After the Orchid Reserve we took a treacherous bus ride up a very winding hill. Though it wasn’t very far, the bus had to go really slow and it took ... read more

It´s now 12:30 on Sunday and England have just won an unconvincing 1:0 against Ecuador. It´s possible the bar I was in will be on the Sun website, although I won´t be in any photos. It´s a shame that it wasn´t 2:1 to England, it would have been nice to have some cause for celebration for los Quiteños. England are going to have to play a whole lot better if we are going to beat the Netherlands or Portugal. Still, the streets are yellow and there is a good mood, people are celebrating anyway and the cars are beeping their horns. Not sure what I´ll be doing now. Finding some food I guess. For now, adiós. It´s coming up to 7pm here and already it´s dark outside. Being on the Ecuator and all that the sun tends to rise and set at pretty much the same time each day. ¿Where to start? It´s been a busy week. Think of my blog "28 hours in Quito" extended to 10 days. That doesn´t quite work, does it. It´s been a busy 10 days I guess would be more temporally consistent. I can´t remember where I left off and at the moment the server is down (hopefully temporarily) so I´ll just give you the highlights. I was up at 3:45 this morning (when most sensible people are going to bed) to climb my first peak in Ecuador - the local volcano Guagua Pichincha - a hefty 4795m according to recent measurements or 4800m according to ... read more

A piece of advice... never get a haircut in Peru. In fact never travel with short hair as you will just end up spending your time choosing between hairdressers stuck in the 50's, a very bad mullet or shaving it all off. I have abstained from the latter and after the last attempt at a decent haircut in Cusco, which left me begging Matt to get the scissors out to stop me looking like a 96 year old, I am now having to learn to live with a mullet. It is an affliction, honestly. Well moving on... next stop Lima, the capital of Peru. We were in Lima for the national elections, which was all very exciting, well, had the potential to be exciting but it wasn't at all... everything was closed and they banned the ... read more

South America » Ecuador » West » Montañita June 25th 2006

We decided as we were never going to see the volcano in Baños in all its glowing glory we would dash off on Thursday night to Montanita. After a very nice meal we caught a night bus at 11.30 pm and started the 7 hour journey to Guayaquil to change for Montanita which is on the Pacific Coast. Within about 10 minutes it was clear my lovely meal wasn't all that it seemed and I got really sick. As the guard on the bus was a complete arse he wouldn't let me use the toilet so I spent the entire night leaning out of the window every half hour to an hour and being sick! When we got Guayaquil we got on another bus. I'd drank a little coke to try and settle my stomach but ... read more

Yesterday was our test at Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ). This was the university our professors were from and where we took our tests. Today we had a field trip to Otavalo a traditional market in the highlands. There were rows upon rows of handicrafts, clothing and everything imaginable. Our guide had told us that we were expected to bargain with them. This was not so easy not knowing Spanish. After everyone had spent lots of money we went to a hacienda to have a traditional Andean meal. It consisted of beans the size of my thumb, mushy potatoes, an avocado and a shaving of chicken. Most people did not finish their beans because they were quite bland. Overall it was an interesting meal. Afterwards we hiked to a waterfall, where the locals get married. ... read more

Since it´s Friday night and also the same night I write blogs, I know all of you reading are anxiously awaiting the publishing of this entry, so I´ll hurry along! I couldn´t think of anything more exciting than reading a blog on a Friday night... Well, naturally, we´ll start with yesterday. YESTERDAY (6-22) Thursdays are nice because the only grade I teach is second. And they´re such an obidient class. Well, at least one of them is. Anyway, my very own country, USA, was playing Ghana in soccer at 9 I couldn´t even watch them! I kept eyeing the clock every so often calcuating how much time they´d been playing and how much time was left. Oh well, I thought to myself, there´s always reruns. So continued with class never putting my eye back on that ... read more

Last week it was the festival of the summer solstice combined with the festival for San Juan = one big party all over Ecuador! We decided to head back to Otavalo as our guide Luis from a few weeks ago invited us to his village to partake in some festivities. We got there on Friday night and the party was in full swing. Lots of different families and villages all dressed up in random costumes and playing great traditional music. The highlight of the night - the circular dancing. It was magic! Apparently the dancing in a circle symbolises the shape of the sun and it was only men who were allowed to dance. In a month the women have their own festival for the moon. It really was mesemerising and we stood and watched for ... read more

Our last stop in Peru was Mancora, A cool surfers hangout where there was not that more to do than surfing....so we did. Waves were good there so we had a good time surfing (and waching the word cup in between) It's easily a place where I could spend some more time but since Colombia is waiting as well I had to move a bit. Thats how we ended up in Equador. First impression is too rich, which means expensive for us. Even before I started this trip to south america I new that Galapagos was not an option, but luckily there is someting as the poor mans galapagos...called Isla de Plata. From Puerto Viejo we did a day trip to this island 40 meters from the coast to spot some wildlife. Especially a lot of ... read more
