Well we actually have a weekend to spend in Cuenca instead of rushing off somewhere as Lyn from GAP is coming out to check that all our placements are ok. Had the morning off school as well on Friday as the teachers had some meal thing to go to for all teachers of disabled children in Cuenca. Really quite random but I'm not going to argue with time off. Lou and I headed into town to go to an internet cafe to call home before going for ice creams. Really starting to be a bad habit! Next we walked down to the river to find a Panama Hat shop which turned out to be a shop/museum/workshop/cafe so all good. Had fun trying them all on (although technically they are not Panama hats at all, they ... read more

....We chose a hostel that was a hut with enough beds for us all, and that had a proper little wood burning stove! You actually had to chop your own wood with an axe that was left conveniently outside, and of course the boys loved displaying their masculinity with this task, so I didnt have to get involved...! And Kat took the role of fire woman, going through two boxes of matches massive notebooks worth of paper and a fair amount of egg cartons, with a scary, manic "If this fire doesnt do what its told I'm going to kill someone" look on her face, before managing to start a magnificent fire. Believe me, by the time night arrived, we knew exactly why there was a fire in our room, I have never been so ... read more

::....Before i get into full swing again, I had the craziest day at la escuela today. I arrived, and we had a massive choir rehersal (ive got a feeling there's some kind of concert coming up, hmmm, not sure about that...) Somehow, I avoided burning at the beach, then yesterday I got very burnt somewhere, I dont know how, it wasnt that sunny....so anyway, my cheeks and nose were a litle (umm quite) shiny and red, very attractive I must say, and all the teachers were teling me their little healing tricks...I thought I had escaped until at break time this crazy lady approached me from the school garden with a lump of aloe vera cactus in her hand, split in half, so all the gunky goodness was glooping out...she then comenced to wipe it ... read more

Ahh, Im almost scared to start writing this, breaking the silence of however long!....hmmm yeah sorry bout that, it has been very hard to get to a computer for long enough for various reasons, including the fact that the internet in the house is a SPAZZ! Firstly, just to get everybodies sympathy, I've been so ill! Haha, in fact the entirity of the "Cuenca crew" have been ill, and so in the past two weeks i have been to the doctors three times, the first two as moral support from Bel and Sophie, then I finally decided to give in, pay the $25 for an appointment, grrrr, and find out what was wrong with me....well apparently I have little tiny amebas living inside me making me sick, urkk, something to do with food/water, but now with ... read more

Life in Cuenca continues on and the adventure is very beautiful! Language school continues with my oh so patient teacher, Viviana. This week, some of our topics of discussion, all in Spanish of course, included her childbirth experience, differences in health care between our countries, what would happen if a big meteor hit the Earth, crop circles, the Berlin Wall and illegal immigration. As for my work at school, the kids still love me. This week, I taught them how to make origami cranes (I called them swans in Spanish because I don’t know the word for crane) and origami frogs! I’ve given up trying to teach them any English or the heads, shoulders knees and toes song because it is just too chaotic and they all have ADD. If there is one thing I’ve ... read more

Hi folks im so sorry its been an absolute eternity since i last posted something but i have been just too busy. since i last wrote i have done 2 treks and a project in the andes. the firsat trek was the salkantaay trail which lasted 4 days and we rose up to 4600m above sea level. that trek was really demanding and is supposedly 40% harder than the inca trail. furthermore most people dont carry their equipment and hire donkeys but we managed to carry our rucksacks for the whole 4 days. the change in landscape was incredible. the first day was arid and surrounded by snowcapped mountains but from the second day on we were in the jungle which was just on the other side of the mountain. the weather was very hot and ... read more

Vandaag is mam jarig. GEFELICITEERD !! Na ... read more

If there are some random errors and typos in this entry, it's because over the past three days I have spent about 18 hours trying to sleep on coaches, and the other night I got relatively little sleep after a rocking (and slightly illicit) party.... read more
