We got up and in somber moods, packed our gear and headed out for our airport transfer at 8am. We said goodbye to Puerto Ayora and headed north across the island towards Baltra. Before then though, we turned off at a coffee and sugarcane plantation and we had a mini-guided tour of a locally run family farm. They showed us how they press sugarcane to extract the juice to make the alcoholic liqueur Moonshine. This stuff was about 50% concentrate and we got a little taste; geez it burned all the way down my throat and it was only 930am in the morning!! They should us how they traditionally processed coffee brand to using these ancient bloody apparatus to extract the beans from the fruit, roast them and turn it into coffee. We finished off with ... read more

Geo: -0.223151, -78.5127Quito was both a start and end place for our Galapagos trip, and a place from which to go to Otavalo (2 hours way) for its famous craft market on Saturday, and a city in its own right - actually the second highest city in the world after La Paz so we were back on altitude alert. The high point was our tour of the old city (one of the earliest UNESCO world heritage sites) organised by the Metropolitan Police. Not very well known those tours so we had our young, female policewoman all to ourselves -made us feel quite important! After leaving her we took a very crowded trolley bus to the cultural centre to go to the City Museum, and after we had been there about 10 minutes Peter went to get something out ... read more

Hola! I spent a few days in Quito getting acclimated, collecting some materials for classes, meeting the local Walsh Ecuador team, and learning more about Ecuadorian watershed/water systems/ecology with local Permaculturista Jean Brown, some history/art/music. Highlights include: * Beautiful city, very walkable (getting in shape for Malingua) * Fascinating architecture, layer upon layer upon Inca upon predecessors * Art, culture, and music everywhere (more later) Also making good progress on *Biology of Soil* which is on my Sabbatical bucket list. Thanks for reading, ...geoff... read more

Part of my aclimatization in Quito was to visit some museums (musea -- someone help me with my Latin?), so quick blog here with photos of Casa Del Alabado, Museo de La Ciudad, y Museo Camillo Egas, all easy walking in Centro Historical. Also all churches have some sort of history/museum as well, getting good sense of history and "paleo-hydrology." Marvelous! Note photos are OK in museums here without flash.... read more

Finally on my way after final night balancing Superbowl and needed to jettison much gear to meet size/weight requirments. K8 and Samm dropped me off at airport, thank you family, then uneventful flights until attempting to land in Quito X2. Heavy rain + other planes with less fuel than us, so we continued on to Guayaquil to fuel and wait for weather. Back to Quito and into hotel late but safe and sound. Settling into Hotel San Francisco de Quito, built in 1702, beautiful, comfortable, and now getting acclimated. More on Quito after i get this blog going.... read more

Hola my Cherubs. Finally arrived in Quito capital of Ecuador after a long old journey going up north to Bogota in Columbia and then down south again to Quito, a total journey time of 7 .5 hours, Direct flights to decrease the carbon footprint do not seem to be on the agenda! Anyway was totally exhausted after the previous days delays and fell asleep in my room and missed the group briefing – so that was a good start! We are 12 people all from the UK and very different , there are electrical engineers, a barrister, civil servants, a voluntary organisational manager and more, most retired, only 3 of us still working- quite an interesting bunch. Ecuador is the smallest of the South American countries but very compact , the guide books say you can ... read more

Only three weeks in my four-month journey and already full of stories and on my way to feeling at home in this incredible country. I am staying in a small apartment in the north side of Quito with a wonderful woman named Mercedes. Mercedes is a widow, with three grown children and small dog name Chiquito. From the moment I got off the plane I have been nothing but spoiled with hugs, meals, patience and acceptance. Mercedes lives in a small apartment decorated with random figurines and a few remaining Christmas decorations. Her mother lives in the apartment in front and her sister next door, all sharing the courtyard used to hang drying clothes. Mercedes speaks no English; so right from the beginning I was thrown into a total immersion situation. But I could not have ... read more

A new year, a new country. We spent the best part of a day travelling into southern Ecuador from Piura. The ride was particularly scenic, with the landscape crumpled up like the front end of a Renault Laguna after a ram raid, there were plenty of valleys to navigate. It's all very green, some greens look a little surreal, like, they'd been added by a special effects team at a Hollywood studio. The whole place reminded me of Wales or Lake District, except on steroids and scaled up to gargantuan proportions. And there was't anyone called Dai with an abundance of sheep following him. And with sunshine and 25C heat. The border crossing was no problem which I'd not expected, and we got chatting to an Argentine priest who pointed us in the right direction at ... read more

We arrived after too many hours of travel in Quito at about 1am but fortunately we had an airport pickup from our hostel which was wonderful. We decided to stay in La Floresta which is just outside The Mariscal District. It's a safer area of town and the hostel was very nice. We spent a full day wandering the streets of the Old Town with beautiful plazas, street performers, and old churches. Yesterday, we did some shopping at a market an hour and a half outside of Quito in a town named Otavalo. The market was huge and there were vendors selling all types of Ecuadorian goods and food. The market not only took up the entire village square but branched out into the surrounding streets. These people are tough negotiators - everyone there negotiates prices. ... read more
