¨Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.¨ - Preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) - ¨If you´d have been born in a family of the market, would you be doing what you´re doing now?¨ Eightteen European and Northern American heads shake firmly. ¨Why not?¨ Well, probably we wouldn´t even understand the concept ¨foreign country¨. And even if we would, we probably couldn´t be less interested because you don´t need ¨foreign country¨ to survive. And that is the most important daily activity here: to survive. And there we are: eightteen gringos and gringas from the Rich World, each of us with a (pre-)academic education, with enough money to fly to ... read more

from the things ricardo tells me, just like mumbai and to some extent new york city, quito has it's manicured gardens, doormen, swank cafés, but there are parts of the city where none of this exists. it's where the doormen might live. ricardo tells me it would be dangerous for me to walk around there at night. my skin color, hair color, eye color---or to put it more simply, my race make me a target to some people. i feel this whole issue is loaded with racist thinking. perhaps i feel uncomfortable with the white privilege i've inherited. what responsibilities do i have or what injustice do i avoid looking at? questions, questions. i spend much of yesterday, friday the 20th, just learning how to navigate quito. mariscal sucre is walkable from where i'm staying, avenida ... read more

is this starbucks i see before me? no. it's sweet & coffee. an exact duplicate, south american style, of the north american mega franchise. and they have free wifi, too! well, this is day two of my stay in quito and i have some 'splainin' to do since i have been quite here for a few days. the airport in quito is brand new. planes only started landing here in february of this year. not a speck of dirt to be seen. very modern, very sleek, very impressive. the one con: it's an hour outside of the city so although the cabs are not expensive (my cab fare was a flat $25 and you're NOT expected to tip either) it is a long ride. immigration was a breeze but there are swarms of people going through ... read more

in less than 24 hours i'll be on an american airlines jet headed for miami leaving a snowy, freezing new york city behind to fight it out between the slipperiness and the slush. but i won't have the chance to get some sun. at 3:55 p.m., i'll settle in for a little more than four hours. this time on another american airlines jet headed to south america and ecuador's capital city, quito. there i have clouds, thunderstorms and showers waiting to greet me. at least the temperatures will be mild but the bad weather is solidly in residence for at least the next week. how long i stay depends on many things. one of which is: where will i be sleeping? in a hotel? in a bed in someone's private room? on a couch? on the ... read more

After the jungle we were longing for civilization, and luckily for us our next stop was Quito, the capital of Ecuador. It was a 5 h bus ride from Tena to Quito, the funny part is that the bus ride cost us only half of what we paid for the taxis from Misahualli to Tena and from Quito bus station to our Airbnb apartment. Quito is on high altitude, almost 3000 meters, so it was considerably cooler than in the jungle, especially in the apartment as there is no heating and no sun shining in through the windows. In Quito we mainly spent out time in the old and the new town. The old town is one of the most beautiful colonial districts in all of Ecuador. It is quite touristic, with a lot of small ... read more

1. It's so seriously cold here at night, that I've got five blankets and one sheet on my bed, and I use them all. We're at 2800 meters here and my fingers are frozen in the morning when I didn't put my hands underneath the sheets. Even my Dutch thermostat has to be adjusted to these temperatures! During the day it's nice though, between 17 (sun gone) and 25 (sun out) degrees. The only thing is that you're getting pretty busy putting on and taking off your jumper all the time... The height is not so much of a problem otherwise, although it really feels like I´ve run a marathon when I arrive at my house about twohundred meters uphill :) 2. You can have breakfast with a sandwich and coffee for one dollar here. For ... read more

My alarm wakes me up at half past three, one hour and a half after I went to bed. As usual my planning has been a disaster. The travelgear I ordered on the internet wouldn't have arrived before today if I wouldn't have picked it up myself yesterday, my bank cards seemed to have arrived just in time but they still had to be activated by taking out money at an ATM in Holland (only then I realized that I didn't put any money on my new account yet, just too late to transfer money to it before the banks closed), I had to get some dollars and my malaria pills... at eleven at night I started to pack my bag and three hours later I was almost ready to go. After a shower there's an ... read more

"Do you have these in 39?" I put the shoe that I hold in my right hand in the air. Between all the hearts, bows, flowers, gold, silver and glistening little stones I found a pair of shoes that you could call "normal". To compensate that normality though (I'm sure that "normal" will be out of fashion for a few more decades here in Ecuador), most simple models are painted in orange, light green or in any other spectacular variant. I look questionning at the salesgirl while I try not to look to desperate. She shakes her head: "Solo hasta las 38." Hmmm, which ones do you have in 39? She hesitates before she points at the three most horrible shoes on the shelf, all combinations of the decorations and colors I mentioned earlier. No thanks. ... read more

Also fast drei Tage in Quito.
