We had one final perk from the cruise line in that they had arranged a bus to the airport. We dozed in the seats but were woken by our cruise guide pointing out some spectacular views of the volcanoes, including the snow-capped Cotopaxi which comes as close to the classical cone shape as anything we’ve seen. It was still visible from the sidewalk outside the airport and Sonia stopped to snap a few photos before we checked in for our flight. We had a few light snacks at the airport, boarded a two hour flight to Lima, Peru and then transferred to a second, one-hour flight to Cusco. Cusco is at 11,200 feet above sea level, meaning that they actually must need to DE-pressurize the airplane as it lands (cabin pressure is usually somewhere around the ... read more

Having gotten to sleep quite late, we would have all chosen to sleep in, but we were determined to give this “organized tour” thing a fair try for a our day in Quito. It was already paid for and seemed like a very sensible itinerary. So we hauled our tired selves (tired, but not Europe tired!) out of bed, and to breakfast buffet in time to board busses shortly after 9am. Our first stop was the National Basilica, an impressive example of neogothic architecture. While the church invites comparisons to other gothic cathedrals such as Notre Dame, the gargoyle forms are non-traditional and based on local fauna such as iguana, tortoises, jaguars and our favorites, the fearsome anteater gargoyle! We walked around the inside and outside of the church and assessed the impact of the altitude ... read more

We had not left much time for Ecuador and as we were not planning to go the Galapagos we were really just passing through the country. We took two buses from Tumbes in Peru to Quito with a quick overnight stop in Guayanquil to break it up. We arrived in Quito on a Saturday and the city seemed strangely quiet. This was due to our hostel being located next to the Palacio Legislativo which is the Ecuadorian Houses of Parliament. The president was giving a speech to the country which was being watched by everyone on any TV screens they could find, in shops, restaurants etc. The roads were closed off with police and security everywhere, they even had a military marching band. We spent the weekend exploring the city which is huge. The centre is ... read more

Monday 26th First thing we walk into town and find a shoe repairer. Christine's new sandals lasted one outing before a heel fell off ! We find a repairer who succeeds in replacing the heel. Next we search for a luggage shop and buy a extra wheelie bag for all the souvenirs. Christine's now got room for even more ! Back at the hostel we hire a taxi for 4 hours to take us out of town. First stop is Pululahua Reserve which has the Pululahua volcanic crater. The volcano collapsed many years ago leaving the crater some 400m below. It's now very fertile and we see it planted with crops. It's ok but not staggering. Our next stop is the Museo Solar Inti Nan. It's a fun place which is supposed to be on exactly ... read more

The flight from Cusco to Lima was uneventful and it was lovely to see Mario's warm smile as I arrived over an hour later than expected. I had tried to email in time to save him the boring wait but unfortunately it didn't arrive in time. The late hour meant that we copped all the peak hour traffic, but I had a lovely welcome from Maritza and Fiorella once I walked through the door. Fran was there with a new volunteer from New Zealand (who's name escapes me at the moment) and after dinner we all went to out for a beer. Fran had told me it was an English pub? but it was actually and English Country Club and very posh indeed. The bar was so small that we were told to wait in the ... read more

I've said before that people don't come to South America for the cities. That remains the case even when, like Quito, they have been recognised by UNESCO with World Heritage status for its old town. (Quito's tourist literature proudly boasts that it was the first city to be assigned this status). However, despite such august plaudits, to me, nice though Quito was, it was really just one in another long line of South American cities. I'd arrived late on Friday night, meeting the pick up from the hotel at the airport and finally making it to my hotel at around 1.30 in the morning, so my first chance to get a look at the city was Saturday morning. At first glance it seemed small and a little provincial (particularly after Lima), although undeniably pretty in places. ... read more

Hola from Quito, Ecuador! So, I am finally in South America yay!My flight arrived in the middle of the night so I was picked up by Omar and his wife from my hostel and they took me to my room (trying desperately not to wake everyone up!) My first day in Quito I went on a walking tour of the city, led my the lovely Obi. My hostel is situated right next to the Old Town so we got to see so many beautiful buildings, I just wanted to take pictures of everything! First of all, we visited the market and saw some different looking fruits. I treated myself to a smoothie which was lovely. After, we walked around the city and went inside one of the many churches. So beautiful inside. We were then brought ... read more

After a week in paradise, it was back to reality with an almighty, ground shaking, seismic bang; we had arrived in Quito. With a painstaking 90 minute, traffic ridden taxi journey to get from the airport to the city centre, we were fortunate to be able to share a taxi with a couple we met on our boat in Galapagos. Tired and with serious Galapagos blues, we dumped our bags down in our six man dorm and ventured out to buy some food for dinner. Staying in the 'Old Town', we had been assured it was safe enough to walk around at night. However, walking the five minutes to the shops and back still felt a little more than sketchy. Feeling as skint as a couple of locals tramps, we opted for a multi pack of ... read more
