We arrived safe and sound last night in Quito at around 7:30pm. We slept a few hours on the plane so we weren't too exhausted upon arrival. We made it through customs in less than 30 minutes and found a cab easily outside the bustling airport. It was already dark outside in Quito and it was pretty scary driving through the city at night. Apparently, Sunday is the most dangerous day of the week in Quito because everyone stays at home on their day off. This is when all the "dangerous" activity occurs. All the shops were closed and the buildings were covered with graffiti. We arrive at our hostel, Colonial House, which was completely hidden from the street except for a bright blue door. To get inside, we had to ring a door bell and ... read more

Day two! We didn't going to clinic today.. this is actually the only day we won't. We spent the day getting to know Ecuador and recovering from a long day of traveling. For breakfast at the hostel, our host made us fresh juice and yogurt with granola and fruit. The only reason I mention that is because there are so many bizarre fruits here. Learning more than jsut about nursing things! After breakfast, we were reintroduced to Don Fausto, our bus driver, and set out to visit the equator. There was an amazing view for the entire bus ride. The mountains make for a really great landscape. It was really breathtaking. The other weird thing about being in the mountians is every time you get off the bus, it's a different temperature. You really never know ... read more

Day one! Getting excited! We spent most of today on a plane so there isn't much exciting to talk about. However, one of the coolest sites to see is the sun setting while you're on a plane. It's a perspective you don't get anywhere else and at that point we were nearing the equator so it was even cooler. It sort of signified all of the great things we were about to start doing in Ecuador and all the perspectives that we would experience there but no where else. We got to our hostel, Otavalo Huasi, late at night. It was only about 30 minutes from the airport on a bus and I was greatful for that. With that being said, we were basically in Quito, which is the capital of Ecuador. Many parts of urban ... read more

After getting back from the Galapagos, we said a sad farewell to Gail and Olin and moved down the street to a hostel that we had read about in Lonely Planet, called Casa Bambu. This hostel was amazing! For $15 a night, we got a private room, free internet, two big kitchens to use, plus there was a giant patio with hammocks, a pool table, and a ping pong table. In the game pile, we found Stratego, a game we had both played as kids and had been talking about playing again. We also played quite a bit of Rumicube. I love playing games that we are fairly even in, in terms of skill. We did some nice cooking and explored Quito. We went to the park that is famous in Quito for having great street ... read more

Geo: -0.223151, -78.5127Some technological difficulties have challenged us and now we think we are able to become true bloggers! Sorry for the delay, folks. We are alive and well and have even skyped our 'baby' today from a cafe in Quito. How cool is that?! Last time we traveled for an extended period, some 28 years ago, all we had was snail mail and an occasional phone call from a post office that had 3 second delays after each person spoke! So here we sit drinking coffee in a cafe listening to a live blues band in the restaurant/entertainment center in Quito at 10:30am.Here's a quick run down of our first few days of our trip:After a full nonstop day and night on Tuesday doing last minute preparations including our final rabies vaccination, money pick-up, a ... read more

We flew this morning to Quito, Ecuador. Its nice and warm here, which is a nice change. We went to the Mitad del Mundo, right on the equator, and did some cool experiments, like balancing a raw egg on the head of a nail. We also found out about some anomaly where you're not as strong when you're standing right on the equator...crazy! We played around with the way water drains in the north and southern hemispheres.. I never thought that only 5 feet on either side there'd be such a difference! Ecuador actually got its name because its right on the Equator. Equator...Ecuador We visited the Old Town section of Quito and checked out a cool cathedral. We had lunch in the square, and the musician was really awesome. SO EXCITED for the Galapagos. Two days after my near-disastrous episode in Peru, my boss, Jason, and I headed off to Quito. I was looking forward to getting back to Ecuador’s capital, as I really enjoyed my first visit in 2007. As we boarded the plane, we joined an army of Argentineans dressed in full on soccer gear and carrying a variety of musical instruments. Throughout the entire flight from Lima these fans sang nonstop, banged on their bongo drums, and worked themselves into a contagious frenzy. They had traveled all the way from San Lorenzo, Argentina to cheer on their team as it played the local club LDU Quito in the semifinals of Copa Libertadores, a prestigious South American soccer tournament. Jason and I both really enjoy soccer; he’s a Brit, and I’m an American anomaly. So, naturally we wanted ... read more

hey all, so before i get into what is probably our last blog, this one about being in the amazon jungle, a couple of bus details that i left out last time - which we think are kinda funny (though only after the fact!). on some busses, a fellow will come by and film each person onboard incase there is an accident and they need to match the face to whatever is left. yikes! in our last blog, i mentioned that the busses stop OFTEN. well on our trip to quilatoa, we had many chickens tied to the roof and each time an indigenous person would barrel down the aisle to get off (typically hitting everyone along the way in the head), they would then have their chickens taken down. the bus would start again, and ... read more

since our last post... left cuenca for the long bus ride to riabamba. as dorota was still feeling under the weather, we did not ride the rooftop train down the "devil´s nose". we did however have the worst pizza we could find :) riabamba seemed to be completely under construction and covered in dust, so we high-tailed it out of there, taking another bus ride to banos. a few words about bus rides: long, loud chaotic music, dirty diapers, sick passengers, many indigenous people, with their awesome outfits, consisting of shawls, long skirts, high heels and fedora´s. strange, but wicked. so...banos... great little town, surrounded by mountains. a bit overfull of tourist-related tour companies and bike rentals, but nice nonetheless. we rented some mountain bikes and rode down the mountain, stopping at the many waterfalls, riding ... read more
